After the "échantillons" battleships (Charles Martel, Jaurréguiberry, Carnot, Masséna, Bouvet) , le "Ministère de la Guerre" choose to built 2 ships identical per class.
"Cuirassés" had a classic main armament composed by 2T2 of heavy guns & an tactical 18kts speed. Secondary armament increase to the long range 194mm gun, nearly able to fight at the same distance of the heavy guns. From 1890 to 1897, displacement increase from 10900t to 12975t.

A new type of "Cuirassé" was also choose to complet & reinforce the battleline. These ships were a tactical evolution of the "Cuirassé Garde-côte" (Terrible, Valmy) & "Cuirassé de Station" or Colonial Battleship => CBB.
These CBB had 2T2x274 & could run at the tactical 18kts speed. Displacement are from 6350t to 6510t.
