Shouldn't that be the KuK Navy? There are certain connotations with the acronym as it is right now in the United States, and it was historically called the KuK Navy in OTL.

miketr

Kaiserlich und Königlich, Imperial and Royal.  That was because of the Dual Monarchy, two states.  One Austria and the other Hungary in personal Union through the Hapsburg Empire.

In game there is a single unitary Hapsburg Empire.  So no split government, etc.

Most likely its Kaiserlich Kriegsmarine or something like that.

Delta Force

No, mean it's called the KKK Navy in game, not the KuK. That kind of has some very negative connotations for Americans.

Borys

Ahoj!
I will elucidate on what Miketr began to explain - in OTL KuK was used for common, i.e. joint "Austrian" and "Hungarian" institutions. KK was used for "Austrian-only" institutions.
Hence, the Kriegsmarine was "KuK".
A good example are the land forces  - the "common" part was the KuK Heer (Imperial and Royal Army), the Austrian part was the KK Landwehr (Imperial-Royal Land Force), while the Hungarian part was the Kiralyi Honvedseg (Royal Home Defence).

So the N-Verse navy is Kaiserlich-Koeniglich Kriegsmarine.
As to the acronym - I have a twisted sense of humour ...

What kind of negative meaning does "KKK" have then for you?

Delta Force

Okay, that makes sense then.

In the US, the KKK is a very notorious group full of intolerant racists and bigots founded after our Civil War. Historically they attacked and murdered African Americans and Chinese immigrants, and nowadays they do hate speech and try to terrorize non-whites and non-Protestants. It isn't a banned group nowdays in the US because it no longer attacks people (in most cases). I guess the closest comparison for Europeans would be the Nazis in terms of how it is viewed by Americans.

Delta Force

If you could please refer to it as the KuK Kriegsmarine that would be most appreciated. Looking at a site with KKK everywhere, while not illegal, can certainly lead to some awkward situations and questions.

Blooded

While I do not support the American KKK or their historic actions by any means(in fact I soundly condemn them and any other racially motivated hate group), I find the attempt at making the acronym politically correct a bit much.

We are a tiny gaming group whose members are located worldwide, I am sure they would have acronyms or even names of vessels or whatnot that translate poorly and stand for something not to their taste. Bringing up what it means is informative. Asking for a change of something that has not affected the group in almost four years seems a bit pushy.

Not trying to cause problems but I cant stand modern political correctness, it reachs too far and causes more problems than it solves. Not sure about the rest of the planet, but in America it is reaching ridiculous levels.

I had best stop now before I offend.  ;D ::)

Quite personally, I like to live and let live and I quite hate political correctness myself. As I am American and I live in it's biggest city, I understand well the KKK's negative connotations.

However, is it necessary to change an acronym just to not bruise a few people's feelings (who's feelings are too sensitive to begin with)? I don't think so.

Theoretically speaking, I should be complaining about the KKK because of my race, but I don't. It's not a problem. Whilst I disprove of their activities and historic actions, I've never thought censorship is the answer to anything.

So I'm quite fine with keeping the KKK as the proper acronym for the Hapsburg navy, it's not like the acronym is to promote the KKK! I feel, as Blooded said the attempt at making the acronym politically correct a bit much. No offense meant.

Native and life-long Atlantan here:

We have a Confederate States of America which only abolished slavery in our 1895, after a violent campaign of terror. Until late we have had an independent Jewish state (in East Africa of all places). Much of the mischief perpetrated in the Nverse has been perpetrated by an underground society of demon worshipers with an occasional taste for cannibalism.

I'm not insensitive to real world sensitivities entering our game's universe, but I think the Austrians referring to their Navy as the KKK is the least of our worries, particularly since in our timeline, there is no KKK in North America (well, at least that's my expectation). The least said about Nverse Japanese culture, maybe the better....

Our world's history is filled with generally messy unpleasantness, and so is the Nverse. It is this unpleasantness that we can collectively find so instructive, as it can inform us of the true nature of our own history. It also makes for great storytelling.

So as long as we maintain the division between our In Character voices and our Out of Character selves, I think we'll be alright.
