The Rock Doctor

Valerian Osadchuk is of average height and build, dressed in a new cotton suit.  His brown hair is thinning, his beard greying, but as he arrives at the speaker's podium, his broad shoulders, bright eyes, and confident stride indicate that he feels young and fresh.  He smiles to the crowd and speaks flawless Ukrainean - although there is a hint of an accent that softens some of the harder consonents.

"Brothers and sisters, thank you for granting me an opportunity to speak to you today.  It is a momentous occasion, and the decision you will soon make shall reverberate for decades to come.

"As you are surely aware - from my accent, if nothing else - I have been away from this land from some time.  Like many of our kin, I left amidst the chaos of nineteen hundred five, fearful of what might happen in that uncertain time.  Part of a Ukrainean diaspora, my path took me to the New World.  My family and I settled in a new frontier in the midst of a vast jungle, and we worked with other newcomers to rebuild a shattered city and its economy.

"Life wasn't easy.  We missed our families and friends.  Basic amenities were often scarce and expensive, and for a time, there was the risk of attack by the barbarians that had once lived in the area.  But we held on to our strong, Ukranian roots, kept it a part of us at all times in that strange land, and with the blessings of God, we endured.  I worked hard in the mines, and was rewarded with increasing responsibility until last year I became president of the company.  At home, my beloved Oksana kept our customs and faith alive and raised three strong, responsible children - all of whom are completely fluent in our native tongue and traditions despite being surrounded by Spanish-speaking Catholics!

"I have greatly enjoyed my time in Gran Colombia.  It is, to be frank with you, thriving.  Its economy is amongst the largest of industrial powers, its standard of living almost unsurpassed.  Its cities and mines are electrified and linked by telephone.  It has influence in Europe, in Africa, in Asai.  Its military power and its diplomatic prowess are equally respected.  Few, if any, other nations offer so much to its citizens.

"And yet in the aftermath of the passing of the last velikiy kynaz, as I returned to walk the streets of my birthplace and the capital, I was struck by the fact that Ukraine is not thriving.  Why is this?  We have vast mineral and agricultural potential.  We are a stout, resilient people.  We are at the heart of Europe.  What are we lacking?

"I think it is leadership.  Passionate, inspiring leadership, leading and working with Ukranians of all ages and occupations to achieve greatness in our time.  We can be an economic titan.  We can be a military giant.  We can be a diplomatic powerhouse.  This is my vision for Ukraine:  greatness.  It will not be achieved overnight or in a few months, but after a journey of years.

"We can start that journey today.  I invite you, my brothers and sisters, to join me as we take our first steps toward securing Ukraine's rightful place in the world.  May God Almighty grant you wisdom and endurance as you choose the next great king of this land.  Thank you."

King Frederich Augustus III of Saxony ascends the podium.  In his mid 50s, fit and dressed in his uniform, he speaks for himself, utilizing accented Polish.

"I come here today out of a sense of duty, and offer my candidacy based not simply on hereditary rights, but also on practical merit.

My House has long been concerned with events in these lands. Augustus III of my House was the last ruler of the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth prior to the Russian backed coup d'état of 1764 (1).

The reign of his successor, the Russian puppet King Poniatowski , saw the loss of a third of the nation in 1772 and revolt.  King Poniatowski called the Four Year Sejm of 1788-1792.  This Great Sejm crafted the constitution of May 3, 1791(2) and named my House, the House of Wettin, as hereditary monarchs of the refounded nation.

Promise of Strife meant we could not at that time shoulder that burden. Instead the puppet master to the east continued to command your nation.  Only for a short period, from 1807 to 1815, as Grand Dukes of Warsaw, have we been able to be of service to the people of this Nation.

Here, now,  once again my House offers to  place itself at the service of this nation.

For the past fourteen years I have served as Monarch of Saxony, leading my kingdom ably and well. Saxony and Silesia are home to two peoples, German and Pole, and three religions, but the Kingdom is prosperous and content. Relations with the East Sea Confederation and the Hapsburg Empire are peaceful. I wish to aid this Kingdom in achieving the same results.

I reign to the West, but have watched with interest the happenings in the East, and can capably serve as your Monarch if so called. "

(1) At least some Polish Nationalist writers don't look fondly on the Wettin reign, but the easy-google English stuff doesn't sound awful, and they did ask them back
.
(2)historically kicking off the Prussian betrayal and 1792 Russian invasion which led to the 2nd Partition, but the Navalism Ukraine matches the Commonwealth post 1st Partition. So there was some difference in 1792.
Did they beat the drum slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the death march, as they lowered you down,
Did the band play the last post and chorus,
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

As Empress Flora I of Romania slowly ascends toward the podium, wearing a light blue silk dress, and a silk green beret, she noticed, from the corner of her eye, Minister Carpet flirting with her. She slowly nodded her head, to acknowledge, while she arrived at the podium. There, she stood, for a moment or two, as the audience got a first impression of her. They noticed a bright blue eyed, blonde haired, 18 year old woman, who looks too young to be married, let alone lead a nation. Nonetheless, when she began to speak, it was full of conviction and strength, of self-confidence and leadership, qualities that were rare in the modern world.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you for the wonderful hospitality that I have recieved here. I have not been in such a friendly foreign nation in my lifetime, and I thank you for how, how, home-like it has been."

"I come here today, not only with heredity at my side, but merit, and leadership ability, to support my heredity. My family traces it's roots back to the early Jagiellon(1) dynasty, the dynasty that ruled Poland and Lithaniua for almost 200 years, and was noted during those years as being one of the kindest dynasties in Europe during those years."

"I, personally, took over the role as Empress of Romania after my brother died at Varna. Although that was a horrible tradegy, and the effect on my nation cannot be denied, over 50,000 people were saved by the rapid response of the milita, to save those strucken, in under two weeks. By comparsion, during the Taal explosion in the Phillipines, it took over a month for serious help to arrive, and during the Tunguska explosion in Russia in 1903, it took over 3 months for help to arrive. Although I have only served for 3 months, as of today, I believe that I have been a benovelent, capable leader."

"I have served as Empress of Romania over a sense of duty, and obligation, to help those not as fortunate as myself. I submit to your infinatly wise judgement the choice, of the next ruler of Ukraine!"

Margita Cyganeczka walls on the podium.
Dress in a traditional gypsy attire, this small young women with dark skin and bright green eyes stood out from the rest of the candidates. She took a long breath too prepare her self. She spoke with a surprisingly deep voice.

"I am not of royal blood. My family holds no titles. If you ask what are my personal accomplishments there are none.
So why do I aspire to this title?
I traveled far and wide. I walked the cold mountains I have seen shores of three oceans. I walked the desserts and the forests I road the steppe and sail seas.
I've seen cities with spires reaching the sky. I've seen walls that span continents.
I've have run in terror from iron rains of enemy cannons. I have bandaged those said enemies wounds.
I know the world and I know the people that live in it.
Men and Women from far away lands were like brothers and sisters to me.
I seen diversity.

My people have for ages travel the land and we learned to look pass our differences.
I can guaranty that people I will choose to work with will be those of wisdom. I can guaranty that it will not be there standing but there merit that will be the defining factor by with they were chosen.

What I promise you is not greatness or strength. I promise you prosperity.
I promise you unity. I promise you no foolhardy undertakings, that will put our nation in harms way.
I promise peace in our time."
She paused for a moment
"And too all those that harm one of us, quick, deadly retribution.
After with none will be left alive to seek vengeance."
Margita walked down from the podium.
When she passed the Marshal he whispered too her.
"Nice punchline"
She looked up at him with hers green piercing eyes, smiled and whispered back a simple"I know"

It the crowd:
