I am looking for a generic cost to build a 100 miles of railroad.

For military, civilian, or prestige purposes?

Current rule is  0,5BP and $1  for 20km, 4BP and  $8 for 160km. This is heavy, standard or broad gauge, light rail cost half as much.

1 KM = 0.62137 miles

20 km = 12.42 miles
160 km = 99.42 miles

Thats a fairly heavy price, IMHO.

Includes all the rolling stock as well.

Transaustralia rail cost 4m pound for roughly 1000 statute miles, that is roughly $40, giving 2.3 per 20km - without rolling stock.

Calculate with say 36kg/m rail weight and you get some pretty tonnage.

I am discussing it currently with Borys if/how it should be changed.

I do not think the monetary cost is that far of, but i see no real reason for the BP in the cost, rail manufacture is not really done at the sort of factories that build war material and related gear. It really comes from the pool of construction steel that all the industrialised nations produce by the millions on tons.

Also something like a 2-8-2 locomotive is going to be over a 100 tons.  Later engines with tender cars would be over 500 tons.  I agree with Korpen such things are going to come out of nations general industry not our military industrial complex. If we want to build un-hisotirc railroads I say chuck money at the problem.

I tend to agree with Korpen.
Only for pure military purposes build RR should be in the military budget.  Even if they have a use civilian afterwards.
