Conqueror Type

Fortresses designed both to defend the key ports of Cromwell and Cartagena, and also to appease domestic gun manufacturers when the Armada initially selected Russian 356mm guns for its next battleship class.  As it turned out, the President over-ruled the Armada after the guns had been ordered, and insisted that a 12" armed ship be laid down.  Eight of the Russian guns, already paid for, were diverted to the fortresses instead.

Mk 1 fire control was added in 1917.

The Conqueror, built 1907 at Cromwell
El Castillo de San Felipe, built 1908 at Cartagena
