Labedz Class Aircraft Carrier

Per the 23 Feb 22 news item, the experimental aircraft carrier Labedz would embark up to six fighters in a local air-defence role.  Based on the Rybolow class korsarz, also pictured in the illustration below, the ship would be relatively easily refurbished to take on a new role as a korsarz or other light, faster combatant once it becomes obsolete as an aircraft carrier.

Which might be sooner than expected once the Union tries to land aircraft on the landing deck, but who knows?  Maybe they'll instead raze the superstructure and put in a full-length flight deck once they have the next carrier tech figure out.  The world is their oyster.

The assumption is that the hanger can handle two fighters with folded wings aft of the lift, and two pairs of fighters forward of the lift, where the ship's beam nears its widest.  Naturally, I've costed the airgroup with the logic that this is a conversion, more or less.

Update:  Trials quickly established that the ship's layout created considerable turbulence and led to a high crash rate amongst landing aviators.  A refurbishment in 1925 covered off this and a couple other things:

-The main thing is clearing the flight deck off.  The above-decks superstructure will be scaled down and shifted to port; the funnels also.  The funnels and adjacent superstructure will also have some plating covering up gaps between them in order to reduce turbulence. Some below-flight deck working space will be created to offset the loss of working space in the actual island.  Why port?  Because Union engines torque clockwise and pilots are used to veering to starboard when landings need to be aborted.

-The armament will also be adjusted.  The forward 130mm 2-gun mount (that is actually a twin mount because I didn't get the research done in time) has awful firing arcs and will be yanked.  From what's known about the recent Costa Rican war, a heavier AA battery is warranted so four 100mm guns will be added in sponsons adjacent to the hanger deck.  Existing 50mm guns will be relocated as well - on the port side, to fore and aft of the island.  On the starboard side, in a sponson opposite the island.  Some 15mm machine guns will also be added.

Wieloryba Class Aircraft Carrier

The aircraft carrier Wieloryba ("Cetus/Whale") will be laid down in 2/1935 for a couple of functions:

-Primarily to serve as a new, purpose-built training carrier with an adequately sized flight deck and adequate aircraft capacity;
-To develop possible small/slow trade protection doctrine in conjunction with the Union's extensive sloop and patrol forces;
-To operate as an aircraft transport from time to time.

The desire for an inexpensive hull can be seen in the minimal protection - a box over the machinery and magazines.  The conning tower is mainly there for protection against deck-handling accidents.

The ship is reasonably armed for self-defence, and its machinery and bunkerage are absolutely good for operating with Union patrol forces or, I suppose, slower capital units.  Basic flag facilities are provided for, in case she operates as command ship of an escort group or such, or those facilities might be taken over for training usage in addition to the dedicated classroom space already built in.

If embarked, the airgroup would likely be a composite unit of 8 fighters and 8 scout-bombers.  In a training role, most of these would be replaced by the faithful Kadet training aircraft for fledgling aviators.

The flight deck is serviced by two elevators with a single hanger between them - the hanger itself is almost exactly the length of a Bogue's hanger, which makes sense since the two ships have similar dimensions.  Sources indicate there were issues getting planes on and/or off Bogue's elevators because of their positions near the ends of the ship but I haven't found a lot of information detailing why.  Maybe it'll show up as an issue when this ship enters service.

An overhanging rear flight deck was contemplated, but the desire to have the ship fit inside the less expensive/more common 150mm drydocks scattered around Union territories argued against this.  She is, as the kids say, thicc.  Or chonky.  Kids say that too.

Once in service at the beginning of 1937, the tiny aircraft carrier Labedz will be removed from service.  I haven't quite decided what I'm doing with her.

The Rock Doctor

#6
Zuraw Class Aircraft Carrier

The Zuraw class aircraft carriers will provide the Union Navy with a strike capability not prioritized with earlier carrier types.  The armament is heavier, the hanger floo deck armor and underwater protection is heavier, and a small transom stern makes the machinery a bit more effective.  Otherwise, the evolution from the preceding Hydry class should be fairly evident.

Airgroup would likely 32 fighters, 16 torpedo-bombers and 16 scout-bombers.  An additional four aircraft can be embarked as deck-park, and these would most likely be spare, assembled airframes to replace losses.
