researching 1925 tech versions of my 180, 165, 130, 120 guns.

The 1925 tech allows 20% oversized shells.
The interpretation in the Gun Research thread is that you can use the maximum shell weight allowed for your tech. So from 1920 tech onwards , for <10" you can use 60 calibers.

That does not require you to use a gun of that length, the ME is scaled to the caliber.
Now for 10<, the gun is also scaled for bore size, so a 2" gun does not have the ME of a 10".
The result is for some gun/shell combos, this is not advisable as the ME does not give a good MV.

So a 180L60 would be 88.41kg.  For the 1925 tech you can do +20% or 106.092kg,  that would push it out of the reasonable hand-handling realm.
So for me, the new 1925 180L47 is more a storyline measure, and I could use the 'refresh' rule, but I'm not bothering as I want this to be a new and improved version, not just an update.

But elsewhere I got to wondering if I could reach that upper handloading range with a smaller gun.
85Kg / 1.2 = 70.83, which is a 167mm gun.
I already have a 165mm gun, and a 165L60 would allow a 68.10kg shell, so 20% over is 81.72kg.
I can trim that to 80kg for ease of remembering.
So the 165mm is taking advantage of overweight shells to fire the same shell size ...almost – as the 180.
There's a thought that the 80kg shell will be sufficiently more powerful vs. the current 65kg to make the erosion of ROF worthwhile. Similar weight, but with less surface area. That should mean it faces less air resistance, and retains a higher % of it's kinetic energy, arriving faster and when it arrives, applies that to the smaller surface area..for potentially more penetration overall.

Then there are two brand new guns:

Start 215L47 with 180kg shell.   Not sure if I'll use this one, haven't figured out the MV or penetration.
A 1925 tech 20% overweight 215L60 shell is 180kg, which makes it heavier than my 230L44 shell (178), This may lead me back to more 'heavy cruiser' as a alternative to the 'armored cruiser' as the Dahae is really verging on battlecruiser.   Without knowing Fox's builds, hard to guess, but while the Zemaka would have a good chance vs. the last Japanese BC's, I felt the Dahae might be decent against the Byzantine and IJN ships....but it's a bit large to dedicate to chasing cruisers.

Start 115L47 with 25kg shell.  This is the same shell as my 120L43, but again using overweight shells with a smaller bore for better sectional density, allowing a flatter firing gun.  This will go into DP mounts for various ships, and should be light enough for a high ROF.  Shell size is a little smaller than the 130's 32kg, but I can live with that...I think.

Research on a large number of mounts.

Researching 7 techs.
