#4
Type 1905 Torpedo-Boat

Recognizing that the class would have a few years of second-rate service left before they could be replaced, the Union undertook a modest refurbishment program of the class in 1924:

-Chop out the old 50mm M&H and 10mm machine guns; replace them with a single 50mm AA and four 15mm machine guns
-Switch to all-oil-fired machinery, which increases the range from 2500 to 3100 nm @ 10 knots.
-Increase miscellaneous weight to 39 t, all of it new, even the radio.
-Basic refurb cost.

M-Class Torpedo Boats

The M class torpedo-boats are basically modest upgrades of the L class and from a distance look almost identical.  Slightly more efficient machinery allows slight more machinery, there's a bit more ASW hardware, heavier torpedoes, that sort of thing.  It's anticipated that a run of sixteen units will take place between 1917 and 1918.  This would put the Union Navy at 62 torpedo-boats in the 1,000 t range, at which point they may scale up to something larger.

N Class Torpedo-Boat

The Nurnberg class torpedo-boats are actually not really torpedo-boats, at least in the general sense of what they're supposed to be doing.

Rather than being part of a screen or a torpedo attack, they're actually intended to operate on the disengaged beam of the battleline as dedicated signal-repeaters and to otherwise be a "tender" to the flagship of a battlegroup.  That can require the ship to move key personnel between capital ships and/or shore, and to function as a temporary flagship, if necessary, while this takes place.

This requires some additional capabilities that the current ~1,000 t torpedo-boats can't ship, such as flag facilities, a long-range wireless, a high sprint speed, long legs, and supplemental signaling capabilities.  The larger N class has room for these, though its torpedo and ASW armaments are somewhat reduced compared to the L/M classes.  As noted, those weapons are there if needed, not because they're primary functions.

It was suggested that electric drives might be handy for the whole "transport between ships" function, but the boffins simply couldn't make it work with the other design parameters provided.

Consideration was given towards a modification of the Kopparberg class cruiser-minelayers for this new type, but frugality won out; the navy had enough trouble convincing the government it needed special ships for admirals as it was.  Securing additional Magdala class cruisers - which could easily do the job - was right out.

The exact size of the class is unclear at this time - a minimum of three units seems likely, but there could be up to five.

Ogre Class Torpedo-Boat

A larger torpedo-boat to lead torpedo squadrons in outlying territories, where the only cruiser on the scene may be a colonial cruiser limited to 22 knots.

The union's sticking to 100mm guns because they wouldn't be able to shove four plus the command facilities into the ship on 1,500 tons plus it makes for easier logistics if the leader and its flock are all using up the same ammunition.

It will make for an oddly-sized squadron if they ever operate together, but we'll worry about that later.

Puck Class Torpedo-Boat

So the first thought was, "Let's add firepower to destroyers making torpedo attacks.  Since the target is generally in front of the destroyer, we can get by with something with limited traverse.  So what's the heaviest thing we can stick in a destroyer, and then do we need many shells for it given how low the rate of fire will be?"

I initially simmed this with a 280mm/40 cal gun, story-wise stripped from an old ship or spares for old ships.  A turret with splinter protection kind of worked but a casemate weighed less.  However, I don't have a casemate mounting for this size of gun.  Go figure.  And it worked, until I saw that the recoil factor was above 1.00.  That still allows end-on fire, I think, but it did not bode well.

So I scaled down to a 250mm gun instead.  I was like, okay, that somehow theoretically works but I don't have a casemate mounting for a 250mm gun any more than I do for a 280mm gun.

But I do have a casemate mounting for the 200mm/45 cal gun.  And hang on, I can (according to SS) install two of those rather than one 250mm gun.  So let's have them on the sides, forward.  Give them more shells so they can fire away for about ten minutes.

The secondary armament - the normal armament in normal torpedo-boats - has a superfiring gun on the centreline forward, and two on the sides aft - notionally, these might interfere with each other shooting right aft, but should have good firing arcs forward at enemy screening craft.  Full load of torpedoes because that's why they're really there.

I think maybe the casemates need to be a little further aft, under the bridge rather than in front of it, so that the ship's beam is a little wider at that point and the casemates have more space between the two gun.  But this is the sketch I have for the moment.

I'm going to build one, Puck, as a "special" in 1919.  They won't work at all as screening units, but a handful in the big offensive Swarm could be interesting.

Schweinfurt Class Torpedo-Boat

The Schweinfurt class torpedo-boats borrow heavily from other recent Union designs - the Quackenbush class sloops in terms of superstructure layout and the Puck class torpedo-boats for the hull.

The Union wasn't satisfied that it could fit four 130mm guns into this unit, however, so has indeed fitted it with a trio of new 2-gun 100mm/45 QF mountings.  There's some concern that this means the class is under-armed compared to foreign contemporaries, but not  horribly so.

On the other hand, they have a high top speed, long legs, and are well-suited to anti-submarine operations, so they'll likely be used to screen capital ships.

Turku Class Torpedo-Boat

It's not spectacular.  It does the main things the Union wants, which is to shoot four 130mm guns, have a long-range wireless, and keep up with fast capital ships for a while.

Appearance-wise it's a bit of a mash-up between the preceding S-class and the Q-class sloops.

Uusikaupunki Class Torpedo-Boat

The U-class torpedo-boat is basically a T-class with slightly newer and lighter machinery (producing the same output) and a few extra goodies paid for with the weight savings:

-two extra torpedoes
-more heavy machine guns, in twin mounts
-sonar.

They're essentially identical to the preceding T-class so I'm not sketching this one.  They'll start production in 2/24.
