I actually made this to post on another forum to see what the range of a triple-expansion steam engine on a 1,000t DD would be.  Range was longer than I'd thought, but the ship doesn't have much in the way of weapons.  In that universe there are no torpedoes, hence no torpedo tubes.  And I'd say ABXY for the layout, although I hadn't really thought about it.

Understand. However, for an AB/XY layout you will have to superfire 2 guns. And on a ship this small that will throw the existing calculations off a bit...

Something makes me think that they would be back to back. With no torpedo tubes present to take away available deckspace, it might work.

True. In fact, with no TT's even an A/P/Q/Y layout is possible. Of course, with that much deck space available I'd look at trying to shoehorn a fifth gun in amidships.

In the absence of torpedoes, what's the mission of a small, fast, unarmored ship with low endurance and small guns?

the particular universe I was designing this for has a preponderance of wooden and maybe iron-hulled sailing warships.  None will have steam-power as it is against their religion.  They have been so thoroughly beaten at sea that they aren't concentrating on finding new ways of fighting at sea, they're kinda giving up.  Thus any steel-hulled warship is virtually impregnable.  This unit needs to cover vast distances (think the Pacific Ocean) with rapid-firing breech-loading cannon to devastate enemy shipping in as many places as possible.
