Borys

anuary 9th, Honolulu

In a ceremony today the NSN announced the retirment of the Heavy Cruiser Anchorage the last of the Olympias. The Anchorage will be turned into a memorial in honor of those who fell in combat and of her sisters, all of which fought to the last man. Olympia sunk charging the entire Chinese fleet alone in the Battle of Yantai. Sydney fighting to the last to allow Constitution to escape. And Phoenix, whose epic battle against the forts allowed the NSN to escape to fight again. Let us remember those who fell so that others may be free.

March 31st, Pearl Harbor

One by one the grey units of the High Seas Fleet sliped into the Pacific under the cover of darkness. The sun rose over an empty anchorage.

April 1st, Somewhere in the vast Pacific

A lone ship moved under a spread of canvas. The SS Queen Anne looked like many freighters, but she hid a secret in her hold. Her Captain, one John Sparrow, paced her deck, in his pocket lay a Letter of Marque...

April 12th, Outside Anchorage

Captain Weismann observed his men as they prepared their position. A veteran of China, Captain Weismann had seen the power of entrenched troops. Four times the Chinese had attacked his trench, four times they had been trown back with great loss of life. Would the Japanese be as dumb? Well they would find out soon enough. More gatlings had arrived, fortunately his troops had completed their positions. He had seen the power of the gatlings and was happy they where on his side, not the enemys. A messenger walk up to him, he was to report to HQ, perhaps some more reinforcements had arrived.

Ay there lies the catch.

August 5nd, Of the coast of Hainan

The grey cruiser was not what she appeared to be, she was neither the RoC cruiser Haiuko nor a Salmon class. Below the coats of paint and false flag she was the Swiss Cod class cruiser NSS Balao. Hidden in the gloom she watched as the silhouetts of Chinese ships crossed ahead of her backlit by the setting sun.

"Wireless officer report the following: 2 battleships, numerous merchants and escorts proceeding towards Indochina, believe to be Chinese."

A few hours later the full report had landed on the desk of the NSN CIC.

August 5th, Port of Zhanjiang and Strait of Hainan

"My Lord ! There is a transmission that uses Swiss yang quizi code but there is no Swiss yang quizi reported in the Strait of Hainan. What is this ?"
"Interesting. Can you triangulate it ?"
"We have an angle, Beihai thinks they have another. It's just a question of finding out what ships are out there..."
"There is currently only the RoC cruiser Haiuko and a few merchants. Only the cruiser is big enough to have wireless. What do you think ?"
"Let's have the dolphins frolicking. But send along an identifying escort."

The torpedoboats Yangzi 77 and 78 steamed out of the harbour of Zhanjiang. Off to go and identify a ship that was somehow transmitting signals in a detested foe's code. Understandably the captains were a tad nervous.
They approached the RoC Haiuko and hailed it for their business there. Then asked the captain to move away from the Strait of Hainan for his own safety and be about his job in more lucrative environs.

Not too high tech?
And the New Swiss vessels are a bit distant from its bases - t Sydney and Pearl Harbour are closest.
Where is "New Amsterdam"?

EDITED:
OK I found New Amsterdam - 2600 nauical miles away.

"Cocky fellows those, dont you think? Telling us to get out of "our" waters!"

laughter

"Anyway our business here is done, proceed to the rendevous, the Pike will take over for us, she is faster than us. Lets remember that we are still at war with them, if they find out who we are they can attack."

The NSS Balao turned and dissapered into the night...

I missed you post Borys, to answer your questions:

All Swiss ships bigger than destroyers have wireless. It is high tech but NS ships tend to be more advanced to make up for lack of numbers. Also the geography and operational mode of the NSN lends itself to Wireless comunication.

New Amsterdam is OTL Darwin in Australia. There is also the large fleet anchorage at Palau. The nearest NS base to Indochina are the Spratly Islands, they dont have docks or slips but do have a small naval base capable of supporting cruisers, and there is a fleet anchorage (but requires a fleet train). The 2nd Cruiser Squadron is operating there.

2nd Cruiser Squadron
TFC Pike (ex-ACM Carp class Fast Trade Cruiser)
TPC Ray (ex-ACM Cod class Trade Protection Cruiser)
TPC Balao (" ")
TPC Gato (" ")

[Reality check ON]
Fleet train in ... 1904?
Do you have maintenance ships built - like Borys did - to operate shipswhere there is no military infrastructure (= a port at least of level 0).
[Reality check OFF]

So what happened to the Republic of Western Australia?

Not a true fleet train, mainly my way of saying colliers and supply ships.

The RoCA is no more. It is now a self-governing province of the nominaly independant Kingdom of Australia under Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Kingdom of Australia is functioning like the British Commonwealths in WWI.

By High Tech I was thinking more in terms of wireless intercepts and triangulation. I admit to having no idea when these came about.

As to the Spratly Islands - a naval base there?
a/ these are turd sized little atols, probably all washed over by the wave from the Taal explosion; the highest point is 4 meters above the sea;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spratly_Islands

b/ to cater for cruisers you need a Port:
Military ports. These are full infrastructural works without fortifications, but include baraks and other structures needed for the repair and maintance of warships

You don't need the slips nor drydocks, but you do need a port.

I agree with the anchorage with fleet tenders part, but otherwise you need a port.

IMNSHO smile.gif

ADDED LATER:
To sum up my view - at Spratlies coaling or loading suppling supplies fully possible. But maintanance and repairs would have to be at a real port.

It all right to have W/T on ships. Whether they are small enough to be put aboard ~100t submarines that's a good question (WWI tech levels should do it). Some radio interception might be OK, also primitive codes, but making disticntion between codes is a bit stretching.

Radio triangulation: it works only if someone has an extensive radio surveillance network, with crews on 7/24 duty. Radio direction finding (which works fine if installed on planes) requires direction sensitive receivers - as most antennas of these days are 10m-s of wire stretched out, this would require a huge movable frame, crews that notice the transmission, then home it in no time to find the direction. Plus a real-time communication system that was not available for a long time - dedicated telegraph/telephone cables connecting stations 100kms apart, plus command centers to deal with it. And it is much later technology, I'd say early 1930s to be used in such a fashion.

Both Thitu and Ita Abu are big enough for a small base, nothing major, repair facilities for small gunboats and destroyers and supplies for up to cruisers, togethere with a wireless station and observation post. The Japanese actually had a submarine base at Ita Abu during WWII and both islands have airstrips.

I don't know about triangulation, but detection shouldn't be that much of a problem at this stage. At close ranges it is probably fairly easy to detect transmissions and destroy the source for wireless antenne. That would seem like a fairly common raider or pirate tactic...take out the wireless array before a message can be sent.

Good luck with that. Taking out the Wireless antenna with the first salvo from a few miles before it sends its 30 seconds message that who attacked her...

With raiders and pirates we are probably talking 1,000 yards before they show themselves by openning fire on the wireless antenna...at least on a civilian vessel, or if they manage to get close to an escort. Torpedo with the salvo if able on a warship.

Phoenix did describe me how she came to the idea, and how and why the Middle Kingdom can have it.

In effect, the recievers for the Marconi equipment are not direction finding, but the radiocrew can estimate signal strength.

With the New Swiss using Marconi extensively, she has set up a string of radio listening posts. In about all her harbors large enough to accept het coastall BB's.

To find the Cod class cruiser in the straigt of Hainan is no feat of high tech at all. Compare signal strength and a foreign code and you have a guestimate of direction .
That combined with the fact the straigt is at best 40 km wide, and important harbors- it's still an entrance to the commercialy strong Gulf of Tonkin- generate a lot of traffic. Crews tend to talk. So it is no strange thing it was already know that a strange cruiser was lurking.
What did draw the attention of Phoenix was the Yang Quizi marconi code originating from there.

This method can determine to which listening station the source is closest to, and even that in what direction it is, if the ship is close to the shore - like this case, to determine between which ports should they look for a conspicious ship.

Signal strength just depend on too many things that this won't work for anything more sophisticated.

I dont have a problem with Phoenix tracking her, but identifying her as New Swiss is a bit far fetched due to a number of reasons. First one is that the RoC was part of NS, they use ex-NS ships and will probably use the same or similar code. So telling them apart is difficult, also they have every right to be there, so it wouldnt be a "strange" cruiser lurking about but a cruiser operating very close to its home base, tracking a potential invading force.

But I made a mistake the RoC doesnt have any Salmons, Korea does. But they do have a Haddock and the Chinese might not know what ships the RoC has or doesnt have.

I do think she only identified the message as coded in Swiss codes. Not that she can read them.

Also, I do find it logic and even friendly just to send " non-neutral" warships away, especialy observing large military actions. For the same amount of trouble she could have send a less friendly reception in a few dozen torpedo's.

What homebase? Taiwan and Hainan are seperate from the Australians. They just keep quite to avoid getting interest from the MK.
Colonel Pranger of Korea keeps every military asset close to home, especialy with Hawai getting more vocal. (he fears a high treason trial, he abandonned the New Swiss governement, all of them)

So what other homebase is there?
And why would Phoenix allow NS or alike ships in her waters?

I'm just going to wait on her reaction.

The Swiss cruiser was operating as a RoC ship which would have been based in Haikou or Taipei. It is perfectly normal for a RoC ship to be operating in that area. It becomes clear why the Swiss ship choose such an identity.

And Colonel Pranger need not fear, I have other fish to fry! biggrin.gif

Now, would you really think the Chinese wouldn't fear/expect spying from a Hainan and Taiwan who are still "alien" ? One never knows with devils and their fiendish tricks...
Sound military thinking dictates sending away all ships that can -and do- send out radio signals when in the proximity of a naval military convoy !!!

Just the same I could have sunk the ship simply for being there and transmitting. I didn't. Would the RoC have complained that I sunk one of their ships ? Of course not, because it isn't theirs. My men didn't know for certain, so simple courtesy held the torpedoes in check.

Considering the Island (Taiwan/Hainan) Chinese still hate the Mainland Chinese that fear is perfectly reasonable! Now sinking a ship that is checking a potentialy threatning invasion fleet very near its home could be seen as an act of war (not that the RoC can do anything). Now the only thing that could pinpoint the ship as not a RoC one is the speed which with it complied with the orders. An RoC one would most likely have complained about interference with a legitimate operation in home waters. The Swiss ship did no such thing its mission completed it did not hang around long. However if the Chinese fleet gets whitin 20 miles of Hainan they can expect a visit from a legitimate RoC ship.

Back to the story,

NSS Pike, Gulf of Tokin

"Men, from now on we are the Dutch cruiser Vanderdecken, we are operating on an anti-piracy patrol as part of the evacuation of Dutch Indochina. We are now on DEFCON 2 level, one half of the crew will be at battlestations at all times. Our ROE are simple, we are to avoid conflict if possible as it interfers with our mission, however we are allowed to fire if threatened but we must didsplay our true identity first. That is all."

Gulf of Tonkin, 1904

Aboard De Vliegende Hollander

The morning mists hid the ship from the eyes of the Pike, but the unnatural eyes of lookout did spot the other cruiser. The ship sailed in the eeire silence surrounding it, but a few moments later two figure appeared on the deck.
"What's you opinion, Ramhout?" asked Captain van der Decken from his first mate, lowering the ancient telescope from his eyes.
"Swiss arrogance, as usual. Should we keelhaul them for it? Anyways, time to clean the hull, it was not done in two decades." answered back van Dam.
"Why so bloodthirsty today? Still, they should take some lesson on humility. Which I will provide."

Orders broke the silence, and the shuffling of the sailors and the creaking of the wood. Suddenly the sails were fattened by wind blowing from nowhere, and the ship started to sail after the Pike with the mists following it.

Just to add the fun, I guess a lot of Middle Kingdom soldiers in the gulf of Tonkin will suffer seasickness, as the wind gets stronger.....

But on the other side of Hainan, a small but strong depression sweeps over van der Vekens Vliegende Hollander speeding over the rough sea..

Pike has a very rough ride, and sees more squalls than a ship over 20 years....

NSS Pike

"Sir there is a mist shrouded sailing ship overtaking us!"

"Did you say sailing ship? We are making 10 knots and there is no wind."

Suddenly the blood drained from the Executive Officer's face.

"Skipper! That's the Flying Dutchman!"

"Van der Decken paying us a visit? Ask his intentions maybe he also got wind of an upcoming battle between the Frogs and the Pigs and intends to pick up more crewmembers."

"Captain there's a squall coming from the North."

"Very well prepare for a gale. I wish I had the Antares of one of the Fishers, then I could challenge van der Decken himself to a race."

CRACK

"Damage report!"

"Explosion in engine room #2!"

To Be Continued...

"One of the stack of theirs' is smoking white" noted van Dam the obvious, looking at the Pike."And they are slowing down".

The squall sped up the ship so that they started overtaking the steamer.

"We'll get closer, and fire one broadside on them. With those fancy guns we fished out last time. I don't want to sink'em, just teach them a lesson, and leave."

Captain van der Decken stopped for a moment's silence, then continued.

"After, we might come back to recruit new crewmembers. Unfortunately these guys don't know much about the fine points of sailing. Where this world is going?"

few minutes later...

The starboard side fired, thickening the mist with gunpowder smoke of two dozen smoothbores. Two of four the 10cm breechloaders salvaged from recently sunk modern ships did not contribute much to the smoke, but their shells had chance to reach their intended target.

BOOM BOOM BOOM

"Skipper! The Flying Dutchman is firing at us! Can we fire back?"

SPLASH SPLASH

"D*** Dutchman, dont worry he cant hurt us its just a ghost, and why fire we cant hurt them."

WANGGGG

(trembling) "You sure skipper?"

"Ah hell give it to them, you have permission to fire!"

"There were no Dutch warships in the Gulf of Tonkin or the South China Sea, the evacuation of Dutch civilians is already complete. These accusations are simply unjust and unfounded."

New Amsterdam, September 13th

"Where was she found"

"Drifting about 200 miles South of Timor, without a soul aboard. Her boat was missing but everything else was intact."

"Do you have her log?"

"Yes here is is."

August 13th
Departed Malindi (DKB Africa) bound for Brandenburg.

August 14th
One day out of port, found dead bird aboard, strange.

August 23rd
Small storm yesterday, one of the crew sick with consumption.

August 26th
Several of the crew sick, can it be?

August 28th
The Plague! 2 Crew and the parrot dead! Most of the crew sick, God Help Us!

August 30th
Have contracted the disease, cannot rise or eat, terrible fever, body aches all over, coughing up blood, can barely talk.
(scribles)

August 31st
Captain has died cannot remain aboard longer, the curse is upon us. Am abandoning ship, Sumatra must be close. 13 dead, 6 remain alive...

(log ends here)

"Is this all?"

"Yes."

"Contact Headquarters, report all of this. And get me a list of all those that might have come in contact with the ship. Oh and find a Specialist in Tropical Disease, find Mr. Culverton Smith if possible, he is an expert on Tropical Disease and has just arrived from Sumatra. This might be a very important lead in the case."

(sometime later in Hawaii)

"Has this report been confirmed?"

"Yes it has. It also ties in with what we have from the UKA Case. If our calculation are correct we might be facing a higly contagious disease from Africa."

"Have you contacted the Leeuwenhoek Institute?"

"Yes we have, in fact one of their surgeons a Mr. Walter Reed is on his way."

(a few minutes later)

"Nice to see you Mr. Reed, please take a seat. What do you think this disease is?"

"We believe it is a new form of Whitmore's disease (Melioidosis) which would corespond with the Consumption descriptionfound in the log. Whitmore's disease is prevalent in South East Asia and while very deadly is not highly contagious. But the symptoms correspond very closely with it, so it could very well be an African version of it. Are you familiar with Dr. Watson's The Adventure of the Dying Detective?"

"Yes I'm familiar with it."

"From what information we have been able to gather even Dr. Watson himself believes we are right."

"So what precautions must we take?"

"A quarintine of all ships for all ships from Africa, we cant be too careful and as long as we dont know what is is or how to counter it, better we not face it."

Pearl Harbor, August 7th

"What is this about Flying Dutchmen?"

"I have no idea sir. As far as we know the Dutch dont have any airships."

"Well find out and have this sent."

SECRET

FROM: COMPAC
TO: COM PIKE

REQUEST FURTHER INFORMATION ON FLYING DUTCHMAN INCIDENT STOP

SECRET

"Sir Pike does not respond, she has gone completly of the air."

SECRET

FROM: COMPAC
TO: ALL NSN UNITS

PIKE ENGAGED BY WHAT IS REPORTED AS A FLYING DUTCHMAN STOP BEWARE OF ALL FLYING DUTCHMEN STOP

SECRET

This message caused its share of raise eyebrows among its recipients, more than one officer wrote it of as a practical joke. But aboard a certain ship...

"FIRE!"

The Captain of the Chinese merchant would not live to regret his decision to help the listing clipper. The first 4" salvo had struck the bridge.

"Prepare to board! She is going nowhere!"

A cheer rose from the crew of the clipper, another skull and bones would be added to her flag.

"Skipper this has just arrived. What is this about Flying Dutchman? A new code or something?"

There was no new code, despite the warm breeze the Captain shivered. For Captain Sparrow, of the SS Queen Anne (better known to her crew as the Black Pearl), knew exacly who this Flying Dutchman was.

Gulf of Tokin, August 9th

"Captain you have to see this!"

"Give me the damage report first."

"OK, we have some storm damage to exposed sections of the ship, not to heavy but extensive. Engine room #1 is crippled,a relatively minor gear has been totaly destroyed and a steam line punctured. Nothing extensive but we dont have any spare parts for those. In fact I dont think anyone in the fleet has those parts, I have never seen such damage before. We will have to sail for Pearl Harbor or Sydney thats the only place where we can find the neccesary parts. The other room is OK but we are still going to be limited to no more than 18 kts. Also the wireless antenaa has been destroyed."

"Hmm we are going to have to end our mission then, without wirless we are dumb. Make course for the Spratlys, lets see if we can find someone to report for us."

"But Captain you have to see this, this is the strangest part."

"What is it?"

"Follow me."

The Captain followed the Ensign to the officer's mess, there sitting on a table was a 19 inch cast iron cannonball. No hole for entry was found and not one of the crew had taken such a thing aboard...

The Chinese have revealed their true face! The double dealing, slimy, yellow skins have shown they are not to be trusted. They fought a war to get rid of "imperialists" and then what do they do? They invade a free country in the name of "peace". Yes they too are imperialist, why else would they be in Vietnam? Are they so eager to fight the French? Or do they want to start their own empire? These hipocrites are not to be trusted. Let those who deal with them beware. Yesterday it was Hong Kong and Shangai, today it is Vietnam, tommorow it shall be Wuhan and Port Aurthur...Beware.

September 15th

By Executive Order AH-1904-00013, all ships bound to NS ports from Africa are to submit to a quarintine for a period of 21 days. The NSN has been ordered to shoot at any ship not complying with such rules. All other ships not comeing from Africa will have to submit to a mandatory inspection before they are allowed into NS ports. Civil Sea Patrol Units are ordered to report to their nearest station for further instructions.

OOC Civil Sea Patrol is the NS equivalent of todays Civil Air Patrol. Those participating will have their ships equiped with older sulprus guns and used to enforce the Quarintine.

September 20th

Reports emanating from the Island Commonwealth speak of a horror seldom seen in civilised nations. Entire communites of Japanese have been exterminated by IC soldiers in massacres reaching in scale those commited by the Chinese at Shangai and Hong Kong. It is feared that Swiss citizens are among those targeted. The NSN has dispatched a strong force to protect and evacuate NS citizens from the Islands. But more worrying are the reports indicating an Austrian hand behind all this. Yes the same Austrians who brutaly murdered families at Taipei as they slept. Who bombarded and massacred the entire population of Aden. Who with the pretext of eradicating the Anahuac, have reinstated the dreaded Inquisition. Targeting not the Anahuac but fellow Europeans who do not share their faith. Yes it is them who have once again shown their blood thirsty side by ordering the massacre of countless inocent women and children in the Island Commonwealth.

October 13th

A man died today in Honolulu of a mysterious sickness. A massive quarintine has been instituted, all ships regardless of where they are coming from must submit to it under penalty of death.

November 10th

NS has announced a pact with the Republic of China, further details will be announced later on.

OOC Per Maddox approval, Taiwan/Hainan will return to NS. Not in the news is how they where politely* "convinced" to return to the fold. the RoC will continue as an "independant" country but in reality will be a Swiss puppet starting Q1/05. Note while related to Enduring Justice, this is not Enduring Justice.

Could you clarify the HBP/MBP/MP issues before 1905Q1?

Also, explain how could you get 2 factories built in 3 quarters when you weere apparently researching several techs?

But your MP is still too high - should be 6 not 12. Of course, Taiwan will change this, but until that, you have only the population of the Pacific Islands and Australia.

Your right except I only have 10 MPs. Some of that would have come from fleeing populations and some from growth. But I guess Im abit over say 1 MP and 1 MBP what would have actually happened. But NS is smaller than most countries. I have no problem changing it but would rather not (due to laziness more than anything), so your call.

Well, I looked at the original distribution and it came out that you had 5MP in Australia and the Pacific, not more. 1 in Alaska, 2 in NSW, 1 in Hawaii and 1 in Darwin. That fleeing population I bet did not went to Australia but first to Korea, Taiwan and the main island. You simply did not have the time to take a mere 20 million people on boats, which would have required about... say 100 20000t liners turn six times.

And it's time to change newspaper title.

The Phoenix is a symbol, a symbol of rebirth. Yeah the former capital was named Phoenix but the newspaper isnt named after the Capital.

I also got some population from DKB South Australia, and the Republic of Central Australia. And the refugees where else can they flee? Korea ruled by a dictator (but a benevolent one), Taiwan already overcrowded with refugees from Hong Kong, Or Japan thats where they are fleeing from. Of course it wouldnt be 20 million, but still quite a few migrated.

Well, RoCA is situated in the most barren Australian Desert, Koenigsland had a population of 0.3MBP, so, with trading off some Island for them, you might get a little more than 0.5MP from it.

And why would anyone leave brownshirt country? They have their lives, their houses, which they won't sacrifice for some ethereal concept of 'freedom'. There might be tens of thousands of political emigrants - enough to fill a few liners, to ship them out and dump them to the mercy of your government.

The refugees from the NS continental holdings went to Japan and Korea. Why? Because it was still before the election - and the brownshirts bought their vote to get into power. And you would not be able to take them to any of you other islands, they are either too far, too little or both to hold more than a few thousands.

And you had no way to deliver the people either. Even delivering so many as cattle to Korea/Taiwan/Japan is stretching it. And the Swiss merchant marine was severely devastated in the Taal tsunami too, and most of it is not in your hand.

Nevermind but I did not ask why PDNS did not do a thing to stop you from coercing Taiwan from joining? Which Taiwan apparently prefer their previous rulers who dragged them into a lost and devastating war. Who even have the gall to conquer them again, under the guise of freedom taking the same liberty from them?

As Swiss are industrious people, I'd bet PDNS has about the same statistics as USNS right now, with a small but modern fleet.

I think I may have found one of the problems. The New Swiss started with a listed population of 42 million people in 1898 (10.5 MP....Desertfox that's 5.2 or 5.3 LBP not 10.5), and increased to (11 LBP) by the end of 1901 with a bonus of 4 LBP in Q4/1901, or something that scored the Swiss 4 LBP...I assume for that quarter only. I assume this because I know Rohan's population has increased since 1898 (from 14 MP to 17.6 MP, mostly though permanent bonuses of 0.1 or 0.2 per year, or an influx of refugees based on story bonueses.)

However the older (1898) sim reports are listed as 10.5 LBP...this would make the population at start 21 MP or 84 million people.

1902 lists the following:

Q4/1904 has the New Swiss at 12 MP (and the correct 6 LBP) after three years. Story bonuses, refugees I can see up to 1 MP added to the Swiss in that time period, since Rohan has jumped up by almost 16 million people in seven years. However the point of how many from the Main Islands left is a very pointed question, since that would normally be the center of the Republic. The Swiss would have added the population of Hawaii to its number during 1901 which accounts for the 0.5 MP increase I suppose....then keep some of the population from the mainland cities taken to Australia instead of the Home Islands.

However with three of the main population areas gone from the Republic, the population would not rebuild in three years time...reintigrating Taiwan (and Hainan?) will help, but what of Korea and the Home Islands? They wouldn't have depopulated due to an election result, otherwise your more ambitious neighbors might just move in for spite. The 1902 list gives the remaining "Free Swiss" 5 MP before Taiwan is added. Taiwan adds 3 MP, plus 1 MP in bonues (birth rate plus refugees) get you 9 MP...Home Islands have 10 MP, Korea 5 MP To make 12 you figure 3 MP immigrated the Islands for settlement in the other colonies: 12 million people, or perhaps 8 million from there and 4 million from Korea. Over the course of 1902-04. Not entirely impossible. Using US Census Record from 1900 to 1910 the US population increased by about 16 million people, about 4 million were from immigration. This doesn't cover territorial shifts within the country however, which would be the Swiss problem. If (if) there is better opportunity in the colonies (frontier) then the people will come. However the NS verse US difference is still three years verse ten years.

However, now I'm confused.

I must admit that P3D's calculation is the most accurate I could see. Don't forget I lost most of my data in december.

New Swiss's bulk of population would be on the Japanese islands and Korea.

Australia as best 3th.

Ahoj!
During those one and half, maybe two years the people in charge in Taipei would have got very used to being in charge. When the SINS battleships arrived demanding "return to the fold", they could have stalled and asked the Russians, DKB, French, Riddermark, or even - GASP - the Manchus for help.
I suppose the Manchus would have sent a fleet to chase the Small Island New Swiss away EVEN without Taiwan giving them anythng.
My belief is that reunification pressures are weak or inexistant - otherwise Taiwan would had been part of the SINS from the very begining.

Once again I demonstrate my talent for totally confusing everyone including myself.

Ithekro: Im pretty sure I started out with 21MPs. I had after all Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hainan, Shangai, and Hong Kong, all heavily populated areas.

P3D: Yes the refugees from Shangai and HK, went to Korea, and Taiwan, I have not considered those.

The PDRoS is a Police State, not somewhere you want to live.Only reason I havent taken it back (which NS is capable of doing) is because I have a nice storyline involving it but I need some ships first.

OK lets take a look at the MP factor. USNS starts out with 5 MP, add one for Australia (Farinj has 4 MP! so 1 MP extra isnt alot), one for emigrants from PDRoS, and one for population growth. USNS ends up with 8 MPs, so yes I am over by 2. I have to fix that.

For the rest:

PDRoS currently has,
2 HBPs
8 MBPs
10 MPs (including 2 miscounted ones)

Korea,
1 HBP
4 MBPs
4 MPs

Taiwan/Hainan,
2 MBPs
4 MPs

Firanj having 4, and "your" Australia having 1 are absolutely unrelated facts.

QUOTE
one for emigrants from PDRoS

This is FOUR MILLION people. HOW did you transport FOUR MILLION people? Are they strong swimmers?

QUOTE
and one for population growth

My, my, the New Swiss sure put rabbits, rats and lemmings to shame. 4 million more births than deaths in 2 years?

7 MP = 28 million people. 14 million females. 5 million females of childbearing age. This means they ALL - every woman between 16 and 40 - had a baby in this period.

Did you spend any starting points to purchase population in RoCA? Otherwise, it was just a puppet state with scarcely a population to suppot the less then two divisions it had. And about refugees from the PDNS. Believe me, people usually prefer to have houses and a job, even in a police state which let most of the population live, than to give it up for some obscure idea of 'freedom', and emmigrate to a state which does not offer better economical opportunities than the one they live in. And being a refugee usually means living in a refugee camp. That the police state would confiscate your house or assets that emmigrants want to take with them to start again does not help either.

1MP is not negligible. 1MP increases your max army size by 5 corps, and the 0.5 LBP would allow you to build one extra corps every two years.

The only inconsistency left is how you have 3HBP when you started with 1 in Australia and 1 built from factories the Navy took apart in Japan.

And I honestly doubt you can take PDNS. They are at the same technological level as yours or not too much behind, also spend their time to build up Factories (so I'd guess they'd have 3HBP by now), and strengthened their army so that they could have around 12 new corps (24) divisions doubling their original size, and a navy with in average the most modern ships. Who are also very familiar to NS invasion tactics.

You know, in the PDNS viewpoint, the USNS navy committed treason, when it decided to secede from the home country, and they are the only cause of food shortages in the eyes of the populace. They have very good PR on their home turf, you don't.

I'm just based on your entry on the country's population being 42 million and sim reports that state 10.5 LP through most of the early days until 1901.

I might note that Foxy is historically not good with PR for his country, so at least the pattern is intact.

Playing in the affairs of others while you still have to retake your homeland by rebellion is not wise. Making friends that might help you "liberate" you home with the least amount of desired returns, territory, or money, would be one's first option, not "honking off the neighbors".

Essentially you are going to have an uphill battle, not only against your own people, but also for international aide, respect, and trust. I can say that Rohan has been losing its trust of the Swiss in general after the many incidents and wars that they have gotten into and nearly drawn others into dispite efforts to keep the incidents contained or resolved.

My PR just sucks even when I try to fix it, most of the crisis and wars Ive gotten into where not even my making. Only Clipperton has that distinction and even then I had a good reason.

I have to check on the starting population, I know the convertions from Millions to MPs to LBPs have confused me a bit.

For me an MP is negligble, I am not and dont intend to heavily increase my armies.

As for the 3 HBP, 1 in Australia, 1/2 somewhere under NS control (theres a reason for this, 1/2 stripped from PDRoS, and the final one constructed during 1903, coming online early 1904.

The PDRoS is wracked by internal problems, alot like the ACM, reducing their factory production. The navy is limited to 3 OR CBs, and misc gunboats. The army is made up of mainly foreign mercenaries, and there is a sizeable underground movement.

I have been involved too much in the affairs of others, but that is about to change, thats why NS decided to avoid entagling itself in IC. Note that it also did not interfere in the Indochina partition. And my current moves are being made with the view of strengthening NS position for the assault on Japan. Hence Taiwan/Hainan returning to NS (hey it was Maddox idea, not mine).

And frankly I dont see why so much fuss about it, NS is and will be one of the weaker countries around. All while beeing surrounded by hostile countries. Of the major powers only the CSA and Rohan have remained friendly.

The Middle Kingdom will certainly heavily protest any meddling of the New Swiss -any Swiss, no matter what they call themselves- with Hainan and Taiwan (and Korea). These islands have now finally their independence and then the devils are moving to usurp them again ? Expect the fleet moving in if that happens.

Leftist newspapers over the world publish this.

QUOTE
Capitalist lies and Propaganda!
Running dog cpitais and their lackeys from the New Swiss Republic,
justly expelled by the slightly misguided comarades of the PRNS, have
accused the PESN of piracy. Those perpetuators of the exploitation of
the working masses claim to have captured a pirate ship with "letters of
marquee" issued by the PESN. Filthy lies! The PESN has not issued any
so-called "letters of marquee" to any individuals nor organizations. It
is a thinly disguised attack by Freedom Hating New Swiss blood sucking
imperialists on the Workers and Working Women's Paradise. Be vigilant
Comarades, as the Enemy never tires in his efforts to undermine the
PESN, the Shining Beacon for all Working Men, Women, Children and Beasts
of Burden. And be warned, leeches, the hand that reaches out for the
Blossoming Fruit of the Gains of the Proletariat shall be chopped off,
with the stump cleansed by fire as to prevent regeneration!

In a joint Communique, the Foreign Ministries of the Kingdom of
Aragon-Navarra and the Habsburger Kaiserreich inform the Republic of New
Switzerland that they view the Philippines Archipelago as their Sphere
of Interest, and wish to see the Status Quo preserved. The Communique
has been delivered to NS embassies in Barcelona and Vienna, but not
disclosed to the press

In the town of Cebu City, Province of Cebu, this 15th day of November 1904: BEFORE ME, Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista, War Counsellor and Special Delegate designated to proclaim and solemnize this Declaration of Independence by the Dictatorial Government of the Philippines, pursuant to, and by virtue of, a Decree issued by the Egregious Dictator Don Emilio Aguinaldo y Famy,

The undersigned assemblage of military chiefs and others of the army who could not attend, as well as the representatives of the various towns,

Taking into account the fact that the people of this country are already tired of bearing the ominous yoke of Spanish domination,

Because of arbitrary arrests and abuses of the Civil Guards who cause deaths in connivance with and even under the express orders of their superior officers who at times would order the shooting of those placed under arrest under the pretext that they attempted to escape in violation of known Rules and Regulations, which abuses were left unpunished, and because of unjust deportations of illustrious Filipinos, especially those decreed by General Blanco at the instigation of the Archbishop and the friars interested in keeping them in ignorance for egoistic and selfish ends, which deportations were carried out through processes more execrable than those of the Inquisition which every civilized nation repudiates as a trial without hearing,

Had resolved to start a revolution in August 1901 in order to regain the independence and sovereignty of which the people had been deprived by Spain through Governor Miguel Lopez de Legazpi who, continuing the course followed by his predecessor Ferdinand Magellan who landed on the shores of Cebu and occupied said Island by means of a Pact of Friendship with Chief Tupas, although he was killed in battle that took place in said shores to which battle he was provoked by Chief Kalipulako of Mactan who suspected his evil designs, landed on the Island of Bohol by entering also into a Blood Compact with its Chief Sikatuna, with the purpose of later taking by force the Island of Cebu, and because his successor Tupas did not allow him to occupy it, he went to Manila, the capital, winning likewise the friendship of its Chiefs Soliman and Lakandula, later taking possession of the city and the whole Archipelago in the name of Spain by virtue of an order of King Philip II, and with these historical precedents and because in international law the prescription established by law to legalize the vicious acquisition of private property is not recognized, the legitimacy of such revolution can not be put in doubt which was calmed but not completely stifled by the pacification proposed by Don Pedro A. Paterno with Don Emilio Aguinaldo as President of the Republic established in Biak-na-Bato and accepted by Governor-General Don Fernando Primo de Rivera under terms, both written and oral, among them being a general amnesty for all deported and convicted persons; that by reason of the non-fulfillment of some of the terms, after bombardment of the plaza of Cebu, Don Emilio Aguinaldo returned in order to initiate a new revolution and no sooner had he given the order to rise on the 31st of last month when several towns anticipating the revolution, rose in revolt on the 28th, such that a Spanish contingent of 178 men, between Imus and Cavite-Viejo, under the command of a major of the Marine Infantry capitulated, the revolutionary movement spreading like wild fire to other towns of Cavite and the other provinces of Pampanga, Batangas, Bulacan, Laguna, and Morong, some of them with seaports and such was the success of the victory of our arms, truly marvelous and without equal in the history of colonial revolutions that in the first mentioned province only the Detachments in Naic and Indang remained to surrender; in the second, all Detachments had been wiped out; in the third, the resistance of the Spanish forces was localized in the town of San Fernando where the greater part of them are concentrated, the remainder in Macabebe, Sexmoan, and Guagua; in the fourth, in the town of Lipa; in the fifth, in the capital and in Calumpit; and in the last two remaining provinces, only in their respective capitals, and the city of Manila will soon be besieged by our forces as well as the provinces of Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Pangasinan, La Union, Zambales, and some others in the Visayas where the revolution at the time of the pacification and others even before, so that the independence of our country and the revindication of our sovereignty is assured.

And having as witness to the rectitude of our intentions the Supreme Judge of the Universe, and under the protection of the Powerful and Humanitarian Nation, the United States of New Switzerland, we do hereby proclaim and declare solemnly in the name and by authority of the people of these Philippine Islands,

That they are and have the right to be free and independent; that they have ceased to have any allegiance to the Crown of Spain; that all political ties between them are and should be completely severed and annulled; and that, like other free and independent States, they enjoy the full power to make War and Peace, conclude commercial treaties, enter into alliances, regulate commerce, and do all other acts and things which an Independent State has a right to do,

And imbued with firm confidence in Divine Providence, we hereby mutually bind ourselves to support this Declaration with our lives, our fortunes, and with our most sacred possession, our Honor.

We recognize, approve, and ratify, with all the orders emanating from the same, the Dictatorship established by Don Emilio Aguinaldo whom we revere as the Supreme Head of this Nation, which today begins to have a life of its own, in the conviction that he has been the instrument chosen by God, in spite of his humble origin, to effectuate the redemption of this unfortunate country as foretold by Dr. Don Jose Rizal in his magnificent verses which he composed in his prison cell prior to his execution, liberating it from the Yoke of Spanish domination,

And in punishment for the impunity with which the Government sanctioned the commission of abuses by its officials, and for the unjust execution of Rizal and others who were sacrificed in order to please the insatiable friars in their hydropical thirst for vengeance against and extermination of all those who oppose their Machiavellian ends, trampling upon the Penal Code of these Islands, and of those suspected persons arrested by the Chiefs of Detachments at the instigation of the friars, without any form nor semblance of trial and without any spiritual aid of our sacred Religion; and likewise, and for the same ends, eminent Filipino priests, Doctor Don Jose Burgos, Don Mariano Gomez, and Don Jacinto Zamora were hanged whose innocent blood was shed due to the intrigues of these so-called Religious corporations which made the authorities to believe that the military uprising at the fort of San Felipe in Cavite on the night of January 21, 1872 was instigated by those Filipino martyrs, thereby impeding the execution of the decree-sentence issued by the Council of State in the appeal in the administrative case interposed by the secular clergy against the Royal Orders that directed that the parishes under them within the jurisdiction of this Bishopric be turned over to the Recollects in exchange for those controlled by them in Mindanao which were to be transferred to the Jesuits, thus revoking them completely and ordering the return of those parishes, all of which proceedings are on file with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to which they are sent last month of last year for the issuance of the proper Royal Degree which, in turn, caused the growth of the tree of liberty in this our dear land that grew more and more through the iniquitous measures of oppression, until the last drop from our chalice of suffering having been drained, the first spark of revolution broke out in Caloocan, spread out to Santamesa and continued its course to the adjoining regions of the province where the unequalled heroism of its inhabitants fought a onesided battle against superior forces of General Blanco and General Polavieja for a period of three months, without proper arms nor ammunitions, except bolos, pointed bamboos, and arrows.

Moreover, we confer upon our famous Dictator Don Emilio Aguinaldo all the powers necessary to enable him to discharge the duties of Government, including the prerogatives of granting pardon and amnesty,

And, lastly, it was resolved unanimously that this Nation, already free and independent as of this day, must use the same flag which up to now is being used, whose design and colors are found described in the attached drawing, the white triangle signifying the distinctive emblem of the famous Society of the "Katipunan" which by means of its blood compact inspired the masses to rise in revolution; the two stars, signifying the two principal Islands of this Archipelago, Mindanao, and Panay where this revolutionary movement started; the sun representing the gigantic steps made by the sons of the country along the path of Progress and Civilization; and the colors of Blue, and Gold, commemorating the flag of the United States of New Switzerland, as a manifestation of our profound gratitude towards this Great Nation for its disinterested protection which it lent us and continues lending us.

And holding up this flag of ours, I present it to the gentlemen here assembled - Don Segundo Arellano, Don Tiburcio del Rosario, Sergio Matias, Don Agapito Zialcita, Don Flaviano Alonzo, Don Mariano Legazpi, Don Jose Turiano Santiago y Acosta, Don Aurelio Tolentino, Don Felix Ferrer, Don Felipe Buencamino, Don Fernando Canon Faustino, (Hijo), Don Anastacio Pinzun, Don Timoteo Bernabe, Don Flaviano Rodriguez, Don Gavino (?) Who solemnly swear to recognize and defend it unto the last drop of their blood.

In witness thereof, I certify that this Act of Declaration of Independence was signed by me and by all those here assembled including the only stranger who attended those proceedings, a citizen of the U.S.N.S, Mr. L. M. Johnson, a Colonel of Artillery.

OOC: That's a lot of information.

I would note that it will probably take some time before the new government becomes anything close to effective, like most governments assuming they have a governmental structure to follow and dedicated to their endevour. There can always be a false start such at the Articles of Confederation of the United States of America as oppose to the Constitution of the United States of America.

Also if I recall, the United States combated the Filipino rebels up into the 1913 in some cases. But we got the venerable Colt M1911 out of the deal, which soldiers still use in some capacity today...some would like to have theirs back for the stopping power, but technology presses on.
