Oberkommando Ost Afrika, Dar-es-Salaam

"Major Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck, reporting as ordered, Herr General."

General Erich von Falkenhayn looked up from his desk and returned the salute. "At ease, Major." The general shuffled through his paperwork until he found a specific form. "While your record is very good and I believe that you will be an asset to our forces here in Ost Afrika, I cannot help but notice that you spent the last two-and-a-half years engaged in 'special operations', with no further clarification. What was your position during that time?"

"On detachment to Legion Kondor, Herr General."

"Hmmm." Falkenhayn considered this for a moment. "I don't suppose you can tell me exactly what experience you gained during that time?"

"No, Herr General. However I can confirm that it was...extensive."

"Indeed. Well you will be needing that experience soon. I have your orders here, you are to be assigned to, ah, 'Fort Zinderneuf' where you will be assistant to Oberst Schultz in our programme to aid the Zulus against..."

It is with great joy that Kaiser Wilhelm II announced the Royal Engagement of his second eldest son, Prinz Eitel Freidrich, to the lovely Erzherzogin Elisabeth Marie Henriette Stephanie Gisela of Austria. The wedding is expected to be a grand affair, with lavish decorations and no expense spared in the preparation of delicacies...

The Kaiser today issued grants officially establishing capital cities in two of our colonies. The first officially establishes Neue Stuttgart on Streaky Bay as the capital of Sudaustralia; the second is a grant for an entirely new city for the government of Zambia, which will be named Livingstoneburg in honour of the famed Norman explorer who gave us so much of our knowledge of interior Afrika. While there have been some concerns voiced about establishing the capital so close to the territory of the Zulus, the spectacular location on the Zambezi River overlooking Victoria Falls is considered to be safe and offers an unparraleled beauty...

The Kaiser today issued Imperial Awards List No. 1, in which the following individuals were honoured:

Großeadmiral Allard Baron von Letters was cited for 'meterious service in identifying and prosecuting threats to the integrity of the Reich' - undoubtably referring to the von Bülow affair - and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords.

Oberst Walther Nicolai of the Abwehr received the same citation as Letters, and the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves; in addition to a promotion to the rank of Brigadegeneral.

Oberst Karl Schultz of the Kaiser's Afrikan Rifles was cited for 'conspicious bravery in actions in support of our allies in the Kingom of Malawi, and continued efforts for maintaining order in Zambia', and awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves.

Oberst Anton Hammer of the famous "Legion Kondor" was cited for 'impeccable service in the favour of the Reich, the defense of freedom against tyrrany', and inducted into the Order of the Red Eagle. Obersts Schultz and Hammer both were also given the honour of induction into the House Order of Hohenzollern.

In addition, several members of the infamous Australian "Bushranger" special force were recognised. Norman-born Major Edward "Ned" Kelly, organiser and leader of the feared fighting band, was cited for 'Operations producing great benifit for the Reich and pleasure to the Kaiser', and awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. Leutenant Dan Kelly and Leutenant Stephen Hart, also naturalised citizens, were granted the Iron Cross First Class under the same citation.

Rohan would ask which New Switzerland does give protest, and on what grounds does it give this formal protest for awards given to the Kaiser's men by the Kaiser?

My bad, all of my NS posts will be from the UNoNS (Old Goverment in Hawaii) point of view.

Reason given is that the men where involved in a undeclared war against an Ally (NS) of the DKB. And the last 3 where involved in the murder of civilians in Australia.

The DKB's formal response: "The accusations by the United States of New Switzerland are wholly without merit. With regards to the Legion Kondor, they had the oppertunity to acquire their services, however they were outbid in a fair competiton. With regards to the supposed actions by members of the Bushranger unit, we ask what evidence do they have? A few Chinese hats left at the location of commando raids?"

The DKB's informal response: *makes swatting motions* "Does anyone else hear a mosquito buzzing?" tongue.gif

"Ahh... so you do know something....

NS finds it very suspicious that members of a newly created unit which has seen no "action" of any kind be suddenly awarded the Knight's Cross for 'Operations producing great benifit for the Reich and pleasure to the Kaiser' when the only actions in that continent have been raids by an unknown force..."

21 July 1903
Fort Zinderneuf
On the edge of nowhere in deep Ost Afrika
(OTL Chipata, Zambia, to be precise, but that sounds nowhere near as dramatic.)

Oberst Karl Schultz eyed the man in front of his desk. From Australia, of Norman descent, he looked to be near fifty years old, but was still strong, wiry, and possessed a general aura that stated this was not a man you wanted to run into in a dark alleyway - or much of anywhere else, for that matter. His uniform was the regulation khaki-and-shorts of the Ost Afrikan regiments; his headgear, however, was not the familiar 'pith helmet' or even the pikelhaube but instead a floppy construct, with one side of its brim pinned against the side of the hat proper. The fresh Ritterkreuz around his neck was the final touch. Major Edward "Ned" Kelly, head of the elite commando Bushrangers, and direct leader of the 250-man I Detachment, definitly cut an imposing figure.

"Major, your orders are to proceed across Malawi and into Orange-occupied Portugese Mozambique. The duration of your mission is to be for as long as you believe your men are able to efficiently carry out these orders. Note that you are being provided a 50-man force of askaris to assist with translation and local knowledge.

"Your priorities are as follows.

"One. Identification, approach and recruitment of natives hostile to the Orange. These are to be provided with weaponry from the supplies you will be given and basic skills training. It is to be made clear that their targets are to be the Orangemen, not white settlers or other tribes. You may recruit these men into your outfit as you deem fit.

"Two. Identification, approach and recruitment of white settlers hostile to the Orange. These are to be provided with weaponry if they are currently lacking proper firearms and basic skills training as necessary. It is to be made clear that their targets are to be the Orangemen, not the natives. You may also recruit settlers into your outfit, provided they will not cause trouble with the native contingement.

"Three. Location and destruction, by plundering, burning, or other means, of Orange military assets, including but not limited to victuals, livestock, ammunition, etc. These will be a valuable source of supplies for your men.

"Four. Location, ambush and, when capable, destruction of Orange military forces. This is to be done at your discretion, however you are under no circumstances to risk the loss or destruction of your outfit. Also you are take every step to obscure your origin, to make the Orangemen believe they are being assualted by locals."

A slight smile grew under Kelly's beard. "So no hat tricks then, eh?"

Schultz grinned as he squashed a tsetse fly. "No hat tricks."

"So we'll be deep in enemy territory with no means of relief or reliable resupply?" A nod. "Ah well, such is life."

"'Ours is not to question why'."

"I certainly don't intend to be doin' any dyin'."

"Quite so, Major, quite so." They rose and headed out of the tent.

23 July 1903
OKW, Neue Brandenburg

The regular weekly meeting of the leaders of the Deutsches Kaiserreich Brandenburg was called to order. The usual three men representing the Heer, the Kreigsmarine, and the Abwehr were joined by Kronprinz Wilhelm, who had assumed the post of Foreign Minister after the disposal of the traitorous Count von Bülow.

It was he who spoke first. "Well gentlemen, my discussions with the Orangemen were a failure. They were willing to consider leasing us the base facilities at Walvis Bay, but not the whole area we wanted, and definitly not to sell it to us. The problem was that they had quite the list of conditions attached, one of which was 'not supporting the enemies of the Orange Republic in Afrika' - and they specifically mentioned the Zulus."

Brigadegeneral Walter Nicolai of the Abwehr frowned. "So they are on to us?"

Wilhelm shook his head. "They might suspect, as they could hardly have noticed the better-armed and -trained nature of their hated enemy, but I believe they've been confused some by the usage of old French weapons."

"Well," Feldmarschall von Molke chuckled, "the Frogs are good for something afterall."

"Quite true," Großbeadmiral von Letters nodded. "How are things proceeding on Operation Ruby Raven?"

von Moltke checked his notes. "According to my information, the rangers should be moving into Mozambique as we speak."

Nicolai cleared his throat. "It might be worthwile to consider the possibility of bribing the Mozambican colonial troops the Boers, er, inherited."

"Good idea."

von Moltke reached under the table and began pulling out folders. "Here are the plans for Operation Ruby Storm. I have taken the liberty of already issuing the first of the orders for moving our forces into position."

The Kronprinz looked up from studying the notes. "Projected start date?"

"1 May, your highness."

"Well we have plenty of time to go over this then."

Letters nodded. "Now, we need to discuss what to do about the Communists in the Spanish Solomons."

"I have unfortunate news on that front," General Nicolai sighed. "Our agents have reported that our message was received by Governor Lorca, who was inclined to respond favourably."

"I sense a 'but' coming."

"It seems that one of his aides, a Juan Marcos, was present, and decided that the islands would be better served by a Communist government."

von Moltke sighed. "So our suspicions were correct, then."

"Yes, Herr Feldmarschall. Governor Lorca was assassinated, with Govenor Marcos taking his place."

"Well then," Kronprinz Wilhelm spoke up, "we may have a way to make use of this after all."

"And what exactly would that be, your highness?"

"The - former - governor was offered a noble title if he were to switch his allegiance to us, yes?"

"Indeed."

Wilhelm smiled. "And he had accepted our proposal, correct?"

"Yes, your highness."

The smile turned nasty. "Therefore, the *ahem* current governor is guilty of murdering a Brandenburgian citizen, is he not?"

Expressions of realisation spread around the table.

"And," Letters noted, "we're supposed to be accepting delivery of Paderborn-Delbrück at Easter Island on the 15th of next month."

"Just in time for us to make good use of him." The Kronprinz rose from the table. "Gentlemen, I leave you to the details of Fall Orange Palme..."

"It has come to our attention that your nation is in accord with Austria and the Middle Kingdom, two nations not to Swiss liking. It has also come to our attention that German paramilitary forces have been involved in actions against the Republic of Central Australia. Honor would oblige us to declare war on the Second German Reich but out of friendship we have not done so. Rumors of an alliance with the Orange Republic are just that rumors, so if the Second German Reich would refrain from making any further movements against the Swiss Solomons, perhaps we could come to an agreement.

Diplomatic Note from the Second German Reich to the United States of New Switzerland

"What nations we choose to ally with are our own choices, and the other issues mentioned have already been addressed so I will not rehash them except to point out that the spoiling of the once-great relations between our nations was due to the rash and reckless actions of the New Swiss Government.

However, I must question, where exactly are the Swiss Solomon Islands? We have not heard of, have no informaton about and do not recognise any claims by any nation to the southern Solomons except those of Spain. As these island are now hard-line Communist, I find it difficult to believe that they could possibly be Swiss, unless they perhaps belong to the People's Republic?

Given their political direction I would strongly urge the United States of New Switzerland to instruct its merchant traffic to avoid the area until the issue can be addressed.

The Neue Hamburg-Amerika Line and the Ost Afrika Line have reportedly received instructions from OKW that there will be a requirement for chartering a number of liners in late 1904/early 1905. No specifications as to exact routings were given; it is also unsure if the OAL, in financial trouble since the loss of its founder several years ago, will be able to fully meet requirements, this coming on top of the transfers of several corps to Ost Afrika over the next two quarters...

Diplomatic note from the Deutsches Kaiserreich Brandenburg to the People's Democratic Republic of New Switzerland

In the recent changeover of power in the Solomon Islands a P.D.R. of N.S. Fritz-class destroyer which was present in the harbour attacked the German naval forces sent to ensure security over the islands. It has come to our attention that its commander was intoxicated at the time so we will graciously not consider this to be an Act of War on the part of the New Swiss Government. However this vessel was still your responsibility, therefore we are requesting that the People's Democratic Republic of New Switzerland pay for repairs to the kleiner kreuzer Nymphe, which was torpedoed during the action, and reparations to the crewmembers and their families who were killed or injured by the blast.

It has come to this paper's attention that the government of the People's Democratic Republic of New Switzerland has declined to pay reparations for the actions of one of their vessels in the recent Battle of Honaria, despite severe damage to the kreuzer Nymphe, claiming that as its captain was a "spy in the service of the Renegade Swiss Government in Hawai'i" they are absolved from all blame.

We would like to remind the People's Republic that perhaps they should have been more attentive to who was commanding their ships, and since they were not they are still culpable...

Ah OK. So it was the PDRoS? However they do not at this time have any Fritz class destroyers. They only have the 3 OR CBs a few very small TBs and a few converted Gunboats which are very similar to the Fritz class.

Großeadmiral Baron von Letters looked across the table at the other military leaders of the Reich. "I understand we have some intelligence information on the Nymphe Incident?"

"Indeed," nodded General Walther Nicolai of the Abwehr. "It would appear that there is no possible way in which that could have actually been a People's Democratic Republic of New Switzerland vessel. They do not, and have not, had any Fritz-class destroyers."

"So they say," huffed Feldmarshcall von Moltke.

"I tend to believe them. The United States of New Switzerland sent information indicating that all Fritz-class vessels have been accounted for - and yes, before you say anything, I believe that information is correct as well."

"Which makes one wonder why the PDR was so quick to deny any involvment and pin it on the United Swiss." Letters mused.

"Quite true. In another matter, we also have received some information, I can't say from where except that it came across Red Desk - " Red being the Empire of France, they all knew " - that some of the funding for the Brownshirts came from a certain figure that we all know and love."

"Agrival."

"Yes."

"And, therefore, there might be an "extra" Fritz-class vessel, or something else made to look like one..."

"We can't rule it out."

The Real Anahuacbusters!

*************************************************************

23 October 1903
Blohm und Voss Ost, Rabaul, New Britain

"I'm sure Oberst Hammer briefed you on the situation, but please indulge me for a refresher." Kommodore von Hoban cleared his throat. "You've surely heard the rumours about the 'haunting' of Paderborn-Delbrück and the recent 'accidents' that have been occuring to the yard crew. We've accumulated enough evidence to be virtually certain that somehow, someway, there's an Anahuac agent stowed away aboard who's responsible for all this trouble. As he's obviously their best of the best, we decided to call on the Slammers, since you have the best knowledge of the Anahuac of anybody on this side of the Pacific - with the possible exception of" he spit on the ground "Agrival. Hammer said that you four were the best canidates for the job, and your mission, should you accept it, is to search this ship from stem to stern and bring me the head of an Anahuac warrior."

The four Legion Kondor officers - Rittmeister Kurt Wagner, Oberleutnant Danny Pritchard, Oberleutnant Sally Schilling, and Leutnat Fritz der Trihs - all nodded. "We're in," Wagner said, "we won't let him get away."

"You understand that this man has killed eight men without ever once being seen?"

"Sir," der Trihs said, "we ain't afraid of no gook."

von Hoban signed. "In that case," he motioned torwards the table, "here are the ship's plans, you'll note these corridors here..."

---

So far, they'd been in the bowels of the ship for four hours. Now and again one of them would spot the slighest movement out of a corner of an eye, but there was never anything there when they investigated.

Oberleutnant Sally Schilling and Leutnat Fritz der Trihs were, at the moment, working the port side aft of the officers' staterooms. Once or twice there had been a faint scratching, that either of them would have dismissed as the rats that were ubquitious aboard almost every ship - except "Petey" seemed to be entirely devoid of rats. Or even cockroaches, for that matter...

A bend in the corridor approached. der Trihs was slightly ahead. He carefully peered around the corner, his Luger out and poised. Schilling paused, checking a small storage room carefully, as der Trihs slipped around the corner...

And screamed.

Schilling leapt forwards and whirled around the corner, Luger raised - and found herself facing the barrel of another one. Held by an Anahuac warrior, standing over the dead body of Fritz der Trihs...

"I was going to sacrifice the heart of your friend here to Tsar-on," the saboteur had an evil smile. "But I believe yours will be so, so much better."

"But how can you be sure it is the heart of a virgin?" She spoke in his language, hoping to throw him off.

"It matters not. You are one of the Grey Horde of the East, you are of incalculable power of sacrifical value."

Schilling paused. "You will not succeed in your plans."

The Anahuac roared with laughter. "MY plans? Foolish woman! Do you really believe that you can defy the will of the Dark One? I will tell you why I am here. It is the highest blasphemy for one of the Maiar-touched to so much as tread upon the decks of a sacred vessel of the Anahuac, let alone possess it! I was chosen from among my people as I had studied from the earliest time the works of those you know as Sauron and Saruman. I am a master of the dark! For the past two years I have 'haunted' this ship."

"Really."

"You do not believe me? Very well then. Behold the power of the Dark One!"

He took a deep breath and closed his eyes. A moment later, he spoke - and his voice had a hollow, echoing quality that rang throughout the ship.

"I AM THE SHIP GHOST! BEWARE!"

He opened his eyes. "That is the very least of my powers. I admit that it has taken much longer than I would have liked, but I shall triumph, and all of you shall be driven from the halls of Montezuma!"

"You obviously hold a high opinion of yourself." Schilling's voice was laden with scorn. "But you have not defeated us yet, and you never will. You are a man - and men die."

The Anahuac smiled toothily. "Quite true. But only when others have the will to kill them. And you do not have that will! For I am a master of the Dark, and if you kill me now, I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine."

"I don't know; I can imagine quite a lot."

"Enough talk." The Anahuac sneered. "Time to die - "

The Anahuac master's body dropped to the deck, his Luger clattering across the floor, four holes neatly stiched into his torso. "How?" he managed to gasp, staring at Schilling in a mix of pain, horror, and incomprehension. "No-one...fast...enough..." He coughed bloodily and his gaze darkened. "You...cheated."

Schilling leveled her pistol at the Eye-follower's forehead. She didn't know how she'd reacted so fast, but she wasn't arguing. "Only cheaters prosper."

Peru

On the 16th of October our cruiser Fürst Bismarck, en route to his Caribbean goodwill cruise, encounted a mysterious vessel in the Atlantic Ocean. This vessel fit the description of the ex-UKA cruisers that have been sold to the Middle Kingdom and Peru in recent times, and was flying the flag of Peru. However the most recent knowledge is that the Peruvian vessel was in an immobile state and would in any event have little business in the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the concern of possible pirates the vessel was hailed and inspected. No evidence as to a lack of legitimacy was found however we must be suspiscious of such a vessel given the circumstances. If any of your nations have information on this vessel the Deutsches Kaiserreich Brandenburg would be grateful to receive it.

"What?"

"There's no way we can move the required number of troops into Zambia by May of next year! It's simply impossible. And any delays run onto the rocks of Case Jade."

"It's simple. Fall Rubin has to be rescheduled until after Fall Jade."

"I've already seen the Kaiser. You know Case Jade is his baby now - and he's not entirely happy with the Foreign Ministry bringing in "allied troops" to Ruby without discussing it with him first. Rumours are swirling that the Reich's Ambassador to France has been "recalled for consultation". It is said that this is connected to the recent events in the Caribbean Sea...

11 November
Diplomatic Note from the Deutsches Kaiserreich Brandenburg to the French Empire

The Deutsches Kaiserreich Brandenburg hereby files a formal protest against France regarding the recent incident regarding the supposed French merchantman "Profitable" and the DKB cruiser "Fürst Bismarck" in the Caribbean Sea. As part of its Caribbean Goodwill Cruiser the "Bismarck" was conducting anti-piracy patrols and had stopped "Profitable" for routine inspection of papers. "Profitable" proved to be an Armed Merchant Cruiser and, following a warning shot from "Bismarck" fired directly upon our vessel with guns and torpedoes, deliberately targeting the bridge and fire-fighting crews.

This action causes us much dismay as great progess had been made torwards a normalisation of relations between our nations. The Reich requests an assurance from France that the captain of "Profitable" was not executing policy of the French Government and that a full investigation into his actions will be taken.

Until such assurance is received, French merchantmen seeking entrance to DKB ports will be required to be escorted by Kreigsmarine vessels at all times while within Brandenburgian territorial waters.

William the Second, by the Grace of God, German Emperor

Gift from KK Abwehr to DKB Abwehr:

Re: UKA County class cruiser sold to Peru

Peru modernized the ship. VTE replaced with a modern turbine unit. The old turrets were gutted and re-guned with a modern 11" gun of French make. The armament can be traced to the guns in Indochina what were reported lost.

Almirante Grau
Displacement:
9120 t normal

Dimensions: Length overall / water x beam x draught
134,11 m / 134,11 m x 18,29 m x 6,71 m

Armament:
2 - 11,00"
2 - 6,00"
8 - 3,00"
4 - 18,0" / 457,2 mm submerged torpedo tubes

Machinery:
23,50 kts
Range 12.000nm

Oddities:
1 - large and luxurious admiral's quarters amidships;
2 - the ship is too expensive for Peru;
2 - vessel is not on Peruvian Armada upkeep list.

The DKB extends its thanks. The Oddities raise suspicions that this vessel may be operated by 'Midnight'...

(ooc: 'Midnight' is a new addition to the War Plans codes...it refers to a certain infamous character that has rather the price on his head.)

(BTW is it just me or is the board slightly messed-up tonight with few/none of the pictures (icons, smilies etc) loading?)

Current Events
Paris, Premier Offices.

You found Agrival?

No sir, we found out trough the Germanic sources, that Agrival aquired the older UKA county class Armored Cruiser slated for scrapping in Peru. It seems that the shipyard got funds and the priority delivery of a large turbine unit simular to the showboat El Presidente. This means that Agrival has a modern warship, with hard hitting guns. Because that bastard stole 11" guns from our reserves. Seemingly 2 used on this vessel, but we still miss 3 barrels and breeches.

If I'm correct, Agrival now has a modern fleet unit with guns that can threaten any of our vessels smaller than a battleship? And has the speed to match?
What kind of criminal is that? Can't he just be a thief or a fraud.
I don't understand him.
I WANT HIS HEAD, marinated in Grand Marnier aux herbes. On a silver platter!

Yes Premier. The ship was last seen in the Orange Republique.Flying the Peruvian flag. Maybe that they know more.
The Peruvians just tell us that the ship is still slated for scrapping, but that they are learning how it was build. Also, we do not find any connection of Agrival to Peru. We guess he's playing them off too.
With this, how Agrival got the money to pay for a warship, is another matter. But we have a case of "misplaced capital ships" in our own back yard. Rember the loss of the battleship Paris? And where it is now?

Paris was lost in tow and salvaged by the Rohirrim. As an act of goodwill we arranged for an easy settlement, as they already had the sistership.

Sir, I myself believe that the yard and towing compagny got funds from an unknow source to "lose" Paris.

Is that a hunch? Educated guess? Or a conspiracy theory?

A hunch Premier. Because the seniors of the towing compagny and the shipyard have a very well payed pension now.... About 50% higher and 6 years earlier than expected.

Ah, thank you for this information.

(OOC: This has no effect on the way the DKB is played, at least for the moment. The details of the agreement essentially allow Kenya internal self-rule, while Foreign and War Policies are handled by the Reich. Over time, say by 1910 Kenya will begin operating its own Army and Naval Units, although still at part of the Reich proper. It's a twenty-year agreement, and by 1925 the Reich agrees to have economy in Kenya not below 2 heavy factories and 4 medium factories. Norman Kenyans expect that at that time they will achieve full independence, under a King. It remains to be seen if the Kaiser will agree to that...)

TRAGEDY NARROWLY AVERTED!
ATTEMPTED DOUBLE REGICIDE!

A near tragedy on the streets of Mombasa yesterday evening as an as yet offically identified gunman opened fire on Kaiser Wilhelm II and Kaiser Stefan of Austria as they were touring the historic waterfront. Reportedly six shots were fired, there are no injuries save a slight graze to the arm of the young Prinz August Wilhelm...

Security forces returned fire and attempted to seize the would-be assassin but the man threw himself from a window preferring death to capture...

The Kaiser stated that the "atrocity" will not affect his travel plans, and that he along with Prinz Eitel Freidrich and Prinz August Wilhelm will be departing aboard Kaiser Barbarossa for Austria on the fifth as planned where the elder Prinz is to be wed...

There have been no official comments on the identity of the assassin however this reporter has heard that he was "of a complexion consistant with a South American origin" and was armed with "a fairly modern rifle of the French repeating type"...

4 February (afternoon)
Mombasa

Statement by His Imperial and Royal Majesty Wilhelm the Second, by the Grace of God, German Emperor and King of Neue Prussia, Margrave of Neue Brandenburg, etc., etc., etc...

"Investigations into the reprehensible incident of two days ago have indicated that the personage who attempted the assassination is a member of the perfidious group known as the Anahuac. It is obvious that Our hopes that this great evil had been snuffed forever in the recent war were misplaced, and that We, the Civilised Nations of the World, can no-longer ignore the actions of the misplaced and misguided Forces of the Eye, Followers of the Dark One, on the South American Continent.

"Torwards this end, and also acting in accordance with recent information received regarding the plight of German citizens at the hands of the evil Anahuac Hordes, I am calling on those of us who stand for the Light to gather and vanquish the evil that is the Eye once and for all, and to ensure that it can never rise again.

"I am sure that there are those who are concerned, that action against the Anahuac, located in Brazil, could be considered action against the Glorious Republic of France. This is not the case, as it is clear that the Anahuac have taken Brazil from the French by Conquest, and therefore we are not against the French, but rather fighting alongside of them to ensure the Freedom and Liberty of the Christian Peoples."

Mombasa Daily Mail, Evening Edition

With much pomp and fanfare the Royal Yacht Kaiser Barbarossa departed today carrying Kaiser Wilhelm II, Prinz Eitel Freidrich, Prinz Augutus Wilhelm and the Austrian Royal Family, heading to Austria via Aden, to conduct the first European visit by a Brandenburgian monarch...

evening, 5 February 1904
OKW, Neue Brandenburg

"Quite aside from the attempt to assassinate the Kaisers, the reports from our agents in Brazil continue to be quite disturbing. We've now lost contact with our man in Florianópolis, his last report said that the local militia had been cut to pieces by what were clearly Anahuac forces." Brigadegeneral Walther Nicolai sighed. "All of the French political and military apparatus in Brazil has been pulled back to Rio and Petropólis."

"Leaving the rest of the country completly defenseless." Feldmarchall von Moltke frowned.

"Our agents have been attempting to organise ad-hoc militias among the Germanic communities, however a few burghers with rifles won't stand long against the hordes of the Eye."

"Considering what our agents in Paris found out, it's fairly obvious that Palpaté is under Anahuac control," mused Kronprinz Wilhelm, who was still in charge of the Foreign Ministry.

"That seems quite likely, Your Highness."

"Maybe we should have had Takeda take him out."

"That would have been inadvisable, it probably would have started a war. We can't afford war with France."

"True." Baron von Letters, chief of the Admiralstab, nodded. The Kreigsmarine was at least 10 years away from being able to take on the Marine Nationale...

"Nevertheless as the Kaiser said we cannot stand idly by while Germans are massacared by heathens." The Kronprinz looked thoughtful. "France clearly doesn't care, at least it's current leadership doesn't, while the idiotic socialists of the Baltic Confederation couldn't care less. Colombia and Rohan care very much about the Anahuac but for them there are bigger fish to fry in the north. That leaves us."

Letters frowned. "Brazil is a long ways away..."

The Kronprinz shook his head. "Letting the Anahuac continue their murderous ways would make us no better than the French, we'll just have to live with the logistical problems. What assets can we send?"

"First Scouting Group can be detached from Afrika, and we can take one of the Ost Afrika Line's liners and fill it with Sturmtruppen. But we'll need to back that up of course."

"With all the transports we've chartered to shuttle troops to Afrika and Kuwait, I'm sure a few can be spared for a run across the Atlantic."

"And then we have to fight the Anahuac." von Moltke didn't look too happy.

"With the full support of the government and the strength of German men." Kronprinz Wilhelm, by contrast, looked like the cat that had eaten the canary.

"I'll cut orders for XXI Corps to mobilise, we can send them to follow up on the Sturmtruppen."

"You should also look into what other units can be spared as well. Any further suggestions? Very well, I suggest we get things rolling then. The operation will be titled Case Platinum..."

Zambia Territory Provisional Capital, Geological Ministry, Lusaka, Zambia

"This is the richest sample of chalcopyrite I believe I've ever seen." The Geological Ministry's surveyor viewed the rock sample with a nearly religious air. "Where did you find it?"

"About 50 clicks south-west of Ndola." The older of the two grubby-looking Norman prospectors had an expression of awe. "There's lots of them in a valley there, rocks like this virtually on the surface. I've seen a lot of copper in my time, but let me tell you, there ain't nothing like this anywhere in the world." He motioned torwards the native tracker who accompanied them. "Chibuluma here, he found this sample."

The surveyor nodded torwards them. "For this we will be very grateful." He returned to studying the mineral sample. "There's a lot of copper there you say?"

The younger prospector spoke up. "Enough to double the world's supply, I'd stake my last cent on it."

"Well then what are we standing around here for? You men go file your claim, then if you would be so kind I'd like to go and see this for myself."

The Weissenstab confirmed that the new heavy cruiser being constructed in Rohan will be used as a testbed, in conjunction with the Rohirrim, for the use of oil-fired boilers as a primary propulsion source for heavy vessels. With auxiliary oil boilers becoming fairly common among new construction, it is considered that a vessel with all-oil firing would have speed and weight advantages over one powered by coal, and with the Reich having comfortable oil reserves from the Dutch East Indies and now Austria, it is considered not to necessarily be a strategic disadvantage, especially as some geologists believe that Kuwait may be in a geologic area in which some oil deposits may be likely. The "Ersatz Fürst Bismarck" will act as a trials vessel, with approximatly 40% of its fuel supply consisting of Bunker C Oil, using locomotive boilers. Should the experiment prove successful, which the scientists at the Weissenstab say they have every hope to expect, they expect to propose that a vessel of similar design to Krupps' recent "Export Cruiser" be procured for a low-risk trial of All Oil Firing. A Kreigsmarine spokesman confirmed the news regarding Ersatz Fürst Bismarck but stated that there are currently no plans regarding acquisition by the Reich of the so-called "Kruppkreuzer" for experimental or other purposes...

"Ja, Herr General. The French are mobilising the Army of Brazil."

"What on earth would they want with the Dutch Congo? I thought the Frogs and the Dutchmen were friendly?"

"Well...Herr General, In order to get to our territory from theirs, the French would have to cross the Dutch territory."

"Hmm, you have a point. And the Orangemen too...what is in your mind, Monsieur Palpaté..."

"Your orders, Herr General?"

"Mobilise our forces. We cannot afford to take any chances."

"XXI Corps, General?"

"They can proceed to Brazil, it would be too much trouble to stop them at this point."

"Any other orders, Herr General?"

"I know it will wreck the precious long-term economic schemes, but I want an emergency order put out for the construction of entrenchments on the border of Zambia and the Congo. Have you heard about those copper deposits? They're reportedly enormous, we can't afford to lose them."

Reportedly the forces of the anti-Anahuac expedition to Brazil encountered some slight delays, the details of which were not clarified, recoaling in Montevideo, but are now on their way to investigate rumours of atrocities against German settlers in Pôrto Alegre. The force still has a significant French "escort"...

The Government of Orange does not really understand what does Brandenburg have to do with the well-being of settlers of German nationality. DKB never had any jurisdiction over them.

Does Kaiser Wilhelm have similar concerns about the well-being of other German-speaking people, like those living in New Swiss territories, Southern Africa, or Europe?

QUOTE (P3D @ Dec 7 2006, 04:41 PM)
The Government of Orange does not really understand what does Brandenburg have to do with the well-being of settlers of German nationality. DKB never had any jurisdiction over them.

The DKB considers ex-pat Germans (who are still "Citizens of Germany" as opposed to adopting citizenship of the host nation) to be citizens of the Reich, as the successor government of the pre-Franco-Prussian Wars government. (The legal situation between the BC Germans and the DKB Germans, is most likely, a disgusting mess.)

QUOTE

The main concern here is mistreatment by the Anahuac - those in other areas I.E. Orange, NS, "old Germany" etc. aren't faced by anarchy. If they were, the DKB might intervene, since they're not, they won't.

Grof Lugosi apparently have some ideological problems with anti-satanist sentiment, doesn't he?

Mwanza Times-Press

This paper has learned details of the attack by "Pirates" on the cruiser Fürst Bismarck late last year, and it seems they were not Pirates at all, but rather a French "Disquised Merchantman" which was boarded for inspection following suspiscions by our friends in Rohan regarding Sabotage to their and the Colombian Canals, and upon the discovery of Equipment not that likely to be found aboard a merchant vessel, but rather a Warship, the French vessel delivered a devastating strike of heavy guns and torpedos upon our vessel, crippling it before being sunk by a Cruiser of the Mark...

Reportedly the French utterly denied the incident and offered severe Threats with regard to the Evidence supporting the Truth of the matter...

(ooc: This, with rather less Archaic Capitalisation, appears in other DKB papers over the next two days, except those in Kenya. Upon learning the news, Kaiser Wilhelm II, stuck in Austria, goes into a towering rage about secrets not being kept, whereas Kronprinz Wilhelm, acting as regent in Neue Brandenburg during his father's absence, seems concerned only by where it wasn't printed instead of where it was.)

Hmmm, maybe the French will end up regretting that they marooned Wilhelm the Elder in Europe, leaving Wilhelm the Younger in charge of the DKB ...

As their forces descend on French Brazil to "root out the Anahuac menace" the Austrians prove their hypocrisy. Was not one of their Admirals a follower of the Eye? Yes, the bombardment of the innocent port city of Taipei was lead by a "servant of the dark one". And was he apprehended? No, this man was never brought to justice, but slipped through the bumbling fingers of those sent to investigate him. Should people not place their own houses in order before meddling in the affairs of others?

Brandenburg Gazette

The published reports regarding the association of a former Austrian admiral with the forces of the Eye, indicating that this makes Austria hypocritical for seeking to eliminate the evil presence of the Anahuac from South America, is curious. These facts, while truthfully not well publicised, have not been covered up, so their being published as 'News' with this timing is somewhat curious...

As the Northern Hemisphere froze over the last season, the equatorial parts of the Southern have proven abnormally wet, at least in this part of the world. Both of te fatherland's major rivers, the Sepik and the Fly, have been at flood levels for the last two months while the Digul River in Neue Bayern is at a catastrophic flood stage, with reports of a number of native villages completely swept away along with their occupants...

OKW, Neue Brandenburg

"And there has been no French response?" Kronprinz Wilhelm sounded incredulous.

"Not 'no', but 'little visible', it would seem." Walther Nicolai, head of the Abwehr, shrugged. "Of course we don't know what Palpaté might have up his sleeves."

"Status of our forces?"

"Between our Sturmtruppen and the Rohirrim marines, Pôrto Alegre is considered secure, at least for the moment. I believe the presence of the forces of the Mark is making the Anahuac think twice about trying to drive us out. There have been a few skirmishes outside of town, however casualties appear to be neligible on both sides. One thing I must point out is that the people of Pôrto Alegre seem extremely happy to have our forces there, however there are worrying rumours that some other towns' burghermeisters may be collaborating with the Anahuac - and no, not just Frenchmen, but Germans as well."

"That is worrying. Status of the second wave?"

"XXI Corps is fully mobilised and embarking on Ost Afrika Line chartered liners in Dar-es-Salaam. OAL does not seem to be very happy with the situation, though."

"With the fact that we've tied up most of their fleet I'm not too surprised. I understand they have been having financial problems over the last few years?"

"Ja, ever since their chairman dissipeared from his yacht back in 1901."

"Hmmm."

"Rohan has agreed to have Arcadia "escort" the troops across, while we've reached an agreement with the kapitan of Queen Emeraldas as well."

"For how much?"

"500 silver kaisermarks."

"Good, that is excellent news." The Kronprinz sighed. "That will be all for now, General, thank you."

Which way are the ships going?

If they are not going the long way, they get some 'bonus' escorts, and meet the Orange battleline out on some exercise but nothing more, unless France declares war in the meantime.

(little news outside of Case Platinum in Q2/Q3 as I spool back up, but...)

13 August
Afrika
(Generally reported:) The units mobilised two months previously are, in general, stood down, as the immediate threat of conflict on the Dark Continent eases - for now.

21 August
OKW, Neue Brandenburg
Transcript of the meeting

Z: Dipl-Ing Ralf von Zinobopp (Weißenstab)
L: Grand Admrial Baron Allard von Letters (Kreigsmarine)
M: Feldmarschall Helmuth von Moltke (Heer)
N: General Walther Nicolai (Abwehr)

Z: Gentlemen, Projekt Emil is a success.

M: Huelsmeyer's contraption worked then?

Z: (irritated) It's a telemobiloscope, not a "contraption"

L: I was there for the test, Helmuth. It works, trust me.

N: I don't recall hearing about this?

L: It was referred to as "Projekt Emil".

N: Oh yes, that.

Z: (ahems) The system is quite ingenous, it will require only slight modification to install on a number of our ships.

L: Only those that can spare fifty tons, though.

M: Fifty tons?! I thought it was very small -

Z: ('lecturing') In order for the device to withstand the rigors of maritime use, it was required for it to be made of more rugged construction than the early prototypes. It also requires a solid mounting, a waterproof cabin for the electronics, room and board for the operator...

M: And how does it work again?

Z: (exsaperated) I've told you all again and again...

M: Humour me.

Z: Very well. (sighs) The device operates somewhat like a Markoni set, at a radio wavelength of 40 to 50 centimeters. The radio pulses produced by the spark-gap transmitter are directed by a funnel-like reflector that is pointed in the direction desired to be scanned. The Markoni waves will bounce off of an object, such as a ship, that is in the path of the beam, and will be picked up by a seperate directional antenna on the originating vessel. If a return signal is receieved, a bell will ring in the operator's cabin. The transmitting antenna can also be adjusted in elevation, and when this is combined with the knowledge of the height of the antenna, the range of an enemy ship can be estimated with a surprising degree of accuracy. There is also a timer mechanism to prevent interference from another ship's Huelsmeyer device.

N: Very ingenious.

Z: As I said.

M: And this is ready for production?

Z: Yes.

M: Can it be used on land?

Z: Presumably, although only when aimed out to sea. The radio waves will bounce off of anything, so while it would be of use in coastal forts, the detection of land forces is...

M: (interrupts) Can it detect airships?

(long pause)

Z: ...it might just be conceivable, yes.

L: Unfortunatly most of our current ships don't have succifficent space for installation.

N: Which do?

L: Exsisting? Prinz Heinrich, that's it. Most of those under construction or planned can carry it, though. Nautilus, Blücher, the Scharnhorsts...

Borys, Swamphens research is based on historical facts.

That is enough for me, to allow research in that direction.
The Huelsmeyer device doesn't do more than ring a bell when a large surface object comes closer. And even that is debatable.

The TDD can detect a 400ft+ ship at 50ft, what good is that I dont know, maybe it can be used for collision warning in fog.

It's more surprisingly that it wasn't used.

But the technology is possible, but if the admirality believes in it, that's another question.

Borys - see http://www.radarworld.org/huelsmeyer.html - as Maddox pointed out, radar is one of those things that it's amazing it didn't catch on sooner.

Baron Letters is all in favour of the device - the rest of the 'Council of War' is rather less convinced regarding the new toy. It's likely that the first device will be installed on Blücher upon his delivery, or perhaps Prinz Heinrich if he's back from Brazil before then.

(BTW, I need to look it up but it may be historically possible to have primitive sonar by 1910 - but none of the rest of you know that. wink.gif )

"Have you seen the latest reports, Herr Oberst?"

Oberst Karl Schulz shook his head. "No, Major. The rumoured disease I take it?"

"Ja, it seems to be more than rumours." Major Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck looked again at the sheet of paper he held. "Reportedly a number of villages in the southwestern part of the territory have been nearly wiped out."

"The copper mines?"

"Are ordered to be placed under quarantine. We're ordered to move there to enforce it, Herr Oberst."

late September
Dar-es-Salaam Gazette

The spread of what has become widely known as "Orange Disease" has reportedly reached critical levels in western and central Zambia, with numerous cases in the eastern part of the territory, Malawi, and southeastern Ost Afrika, and scattered reports from the remainder of the provinces. With reports of cases on the rise in Dar-es-Salaam the Governor's Office has ordered that all ships departing Ost Afrikan ports be quarantined off of Zanzibar for a period not to be less than ten days...
