The USSN Savanaha below is an example of the Tech I expect the USS to have available to build ships in 1880.   She is built like a Brick Out House.....  and part of that is intentional.  She is not by any means revolutionary or visionary.  The ships proceeding this class will be some Cruisers and Other Ships of the line most likely with sails and steam power.   Broad Side Armament and Muzzle loading weapons will be standard on those ships from the 1860 thru 1875, from 1875 onwards a few breach loading weapons will be tested leading to this the First all Breaching loading Open Barbette Battle Ship in the USSN.

   Miscellaneous weights: 0 tons, 0.0 %

Overall survivability and seakeeping ability:
Survivability (Non-critical penetrating hits needed to sink ship):
     12,497 lbs / 5,669 Kg = 17.0 x 12.0 " / 305 mm shells or 2.2 torpedoes
Stability (Unstable if below 1.00): 1.33
   Metacentric height 4.7 ft / 1.4 m
   Roll period: 13.2 seconds
   Steadiness   - As gun platform (Average = 50 %): 98 %
         - Recoil effect (Restricted arc if above 1.00): 0.38
   Seaboat quality  (Average = 1.00): 1.96

Hull form characteristics:
Hull has rise forward of midbreak,
a ram bow and a round stern
   Block coefficient (normal/deep): 0.460 / 0.464
   Length to Beam Ratio: 4.78 : 1
'Natural speed' for length: 18.03 kts
Power going to wave formation at top speed: 41 %
   Trim (Max stability = 0, Max steadiness = 100): 50
Bow angle (Positive = bow angles forward): -7.00 degrees
   Stern overhang: 4.00 ft / 1.22 m
Freeboard (% = length of deck as a percentage of waterline length):
            Fore end,    Aft end

      - Average freeboard:      15.00 ft / 4.57 m
Ship tends to be wet forward

Ship space, strength and comments:
   Space   - Hull below water (magazines/engines, low = better): 60.2 %
      - Above water (accommodation/working, high = better): 85.4 %
Waterplane Area: 14,215 Square feet or 1,321 Square metres
   Displacement factor (Displacement / loading): 122 %

Might want to fix that to read as 2 twins instead...
You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when solider lads march by
Sneak home and pray that you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.
