Shocking news today as the Irish government regretfully announced the death of Garrison Ahern, the president of the Republic of Ireland for the last 7 years. According to official government sources, the president suffered a stroke in the early hours of the morning. Doctors were at his bedside within minutes but they were unable to revive the president. As of today for the remainder of the week all Irish flags at government and armed forces facilities, including warships, are to be flown at haft mast. A black boarded mourning flag will be flown in addition. In the aftershocks of the death of the current president, Kieran Quinlan has been appointed as the intern president to finish out the remainder of Ahern's term. This time will not count towards the term limit for holding the presidential office. Quinlan gave the following speech to a group of reporters.
"This is a sorry time for our country, Garrison was a great leader. His vision for the advancement of our great republic was grand in scale and even in its unfinished form is already providing in the way that he intended. I pledge to continue and potentially expand these grand programs. Wile President Ahern's vision for this country was very grand, there are sill ways to continue improving it. Starting within the next few weeks, we will begin to pursue a more active role in events beyond our shores. We, the Irish people, have a place on the world stage. In the memory of Garrison Ahern, we can come together as the Irish people and show him from wherever he watches us from now, that the Irish people want to embody his vision for our country and lead it to new-found glory."

President Hoover sends official condolences from Richmond. As he has little in the way of familial or social ties to Ireland, they are your basic (rather dry) political pleasantries.

They are, however, far from the only response given by Dixie.

23JUN1919
2300 Local Time

Five men huddle in a small stand of trees on the hillside.

All five are locals, two stayed in the hills and three moved on to things beyond their small valley, but all return to this spot as often as they can- if for no other reason than the large and well maintained copper still that is currently issuing forth a slow trickle of a drink that the locals called 'painter's piss.' Not that any of these men would drink the liquor while it was still white, but a small oak cask sitting nearby held a few gallons which had been run off nearly a decade ago... and it was disappearing at a steady rate.

"A dangerous situation, She's in... a new and untried leader and a small military."

"The Dutch are back on the move- they already hold part of our people hostage... damned if they get the rest."

"But wha' can we do? It's not like we can fight 'em from over here."

"Well... I ain't sure, but somethin' has to be done. Lord knows that She's the last free place for our people."

"We all have something to offer the home of our fathers, boys. And there's many more of us here that thinks the same- you all know that. All you gotta do is ask what you know that they need. Might not be much, might not seem like anything to you; then again, it might mean everything to you... right up to your freedom.

A chorus of "you know it" and "well worth it" came from the other four friends. Slowly, as the cask of corn liquor drained away, plans were built. A little money changed hands, and one volunteered to book passage to Ireland in two months time. They'd all meet here again three days before he sailed with their part.

France sends its condoleances, and a small delegation of Minister Capets Ministry of Foreign Affairs to attend the funeral.

The small passenger ferry delivering the officials is chartered from the France- Norman route, and is accompagnied by a brandnew Type 2 airship* adorned by a black painted bar over the hull, as token of respect.

* This airship is making the first longer ranged test fligth before being delivered to the Italians in the rift. If it ever gets there....

Exerpt for a Dublin Newspaper:
Today the new ambassador to the Confederate States of America, Dermot McGuinness, left today for the CSA on a passenger liner. The first in a new effort to attempt to bring Ireland into a greater role on the world stage, no firm details were released about Ambassador McGuinness's orders. In the ambassadorial party however was a much larger group of officers from the Irish Navy, including a unidentified commodore. This has lead to wild speculation as to the reason for the increased Navy representation. Later in the week a similar delegation under Ambassador Ronan Curren will depart for the Kingdom of the Netherlands on board and Irish warship, with no major details released about his first orders eather. An increased Navy group is also expected to sail with Ambassador Curren. This is the start of President Quinlan's program to expand Irish interests beyond our shores, a stark reversal of the late President Ahern's isolationist policy.

The Dutch government sends its condolences and will send a delegation to attend the funeral and remembrance services if that is allowed?

The Dutch Foreign Ministry, with Anders Welsen deputy foreign minister  personally attending*, will meet with Ambassador Ronan Curren.

* First Minister Nicholas van Rijn's man in the Dutch Foreign Ministry, not the Hoen leftover, van Guits, runs that place. .

*overheard in a maintenance shed in the Mobile division of Ingal's Shipyard*

About a hundred yards or so away, a young man with dirty blond hair and freckles hurries off into the shadows of a warehouse. He carriers a large toolbox in his left hand... but strangely it doesn't look all that heavy. Perhaps it's the fact that he carries a rather large pipe wrench in his right. Maybe that's why the box looks so light- the wrench should be in the box instead of in his hand, held almost like a hatchet.

But if the wrench should be in the box... and if the wrench is in his hand instead... then I wonder what's in that toolbox.
