Didn't read it all, but took away that a damaged shaft is a much bigger problem than just "can't go as fast".

Drachinifel had a good video on it today actually. 

The shaft losing its strut due to the torpedo hit right at the stern caused it to be unbalanced while rotating under heavy torque....it basically burst seams all along the shaft run, which in its case went deep into the ship.  That caused massive flooding and a loss of half of the electric power.

It's one reason that even though I'm about to gain geared drives, my ships that have heavy TDS systems and are otherwise designed more for toughness under fire than light weight....will stick with TurboElectric, maybe TurboElectric Geared.  Because Geared drives need shaft runs to the transmissions near the turbines.  Turbo Electric has its risks, but the stubby shaft runs from the electric motors mean less chance of massive progressive flooding in the case of a shaft taking a torpedo strike.
