The first production coastal submarines of the Confederacy.
Expected to prove useful in the defense of the Gulf of California, Gulf of Mexico and the straits of Florida.

A-class (A-01 through 12)

Displacement:            250 tons (surfaced)
Surfaced propulsion:      550hp, 11.5 knots (petrol)
Submerged propulsion:       150hp, 8 knots (electric)
Range:                   1000 n. mi. @ 10kts (surf)

Complement:            21
Armament:             1 19.5-inch torpedo tubes
                   2 19.5-inch torpedo reloads

Experiments with the A and B class coastal subs indicate potential for the submersible boat as an offensive as well as defensive weapon. With exploring such operations in mind, the Navy commissioned the design of a much larger boat, the C-Class. At least 5 will be acquired during 1913.
