November 9th, The Palace
"Your Majesty! This has just came in from our contact at the Beleriand Canal Project. The German Armored Cruiser Bismark was brought into harbor badly damaged. The rumors state that the German Cruiser had a run in with a Pirate, but we believe otherwise. From information obtained elsewhere, we belive that the damage has been caused by a disguised French ship. Sabotage has been present in the GC and Beleriand Canal projects but not at the French canal."
"The French? It figures. They cant get their noses out of other people's business."
"If war starts between Germany and Rohan and the French, we could profit from it."
"Yes, but the time is not right. Yet the time of reckoning is near. Bring all forces to Alert. Increase security around the Canal Zone and ask the Swiss for more troops. We are not going to get caught with our pants down."
"Yes your Majesty. The Swiss have infact offered to sell us the Battleship Alaska."
"What happened to the Chinese Battleship?"
"We have not yet heard from the Chinese. We might have to get the torpedoes from another source."
"The Alaska is damaged right? Take her anyway we need anything we can."
"Yes but she has been partially repaired. The Swiss have also offered to give us the plans they had to rebuild her."
"That will be suitable. Since we have not yet heard from the Chinese."

Somewhere in Siam...
"We've done it! We have succesfully infiltrated one of our men into the Abwehr."
"So what do we have?"
"We have confirmed that the Bismark was attacked by a French disguised vessel. Tensions are high in the Caribbean. And our latest coup, we not only found out about a new battleship the Germans plan on building but also that the French are very worried about it."
"So what are you getting at?"
"The International situation might turn into our favor, the French will be too busy occupied by the Germans, and if we are careful we might be able to recover our lost provinces. We also believe that the Columbians plan to attack Brazil, its just rumors, but again it can prove a useful distraction."
"Very well, are our forces ready? What about Daisy Cutter?"
"Our forces are ready, the Army of Cambodia is already deployed, with the Army of Laos preparing. We aso had a breaktrough for Operation Daisy Cutter, the Swiss found a stash of G-98 rifles, so we have enough weapons for it. Insurgents in Cambodia have already receive the first shipment."
"The French will never know what hit them...Get Q up here I need to talk with him."

Don't forget now: I have my own Elephant Squad.
And they're African elephants.

"The situation between Austria and France is reaching critical proportions. French Citizens have been quarintined. We have specific information that a joint German-Austrian force will invade Brazil."
"The French wont like that. Step up Daisy Cutter, and get me the French ambassador, lets see if we an profit from this. Oh and deploy the Gulf Squadrons, I want to know what the French Pacific Fleet is up to."
Sattahip, Febuary 27th
The armored cruiser Tennesarim and the protected cruisers Naresuan and Taksin set sail today. No destination has been listed.

Hans Schmytke, the Austrian Minister in Bangkok was examining his garden. In the corner he spied the so-called "spirit house". Yet it was the perfect spot to set up his favorite garden gnomes. For him they held purely aesthetic value, but maybe if he explained them as "good luck" bringers, or "protective spirits" the locals will not be scandalized, or their religious feelings offended ...

Minister Schmytke looked at the ships sailing down the Chao Phraya. One of the freighters carried "war supplies" for the Austrian Heer which he was ordered to arrange. He again shook his head with disbelief.
- "What were the blokes at the Kreigsministerium thinking? Did somebody read too much Plutarch? Or that "place in the Sun" prophet, Reinhart Kipplinger?"

Samak Cha observed as the deckhands attempted to load the next elephant, the beasts didnt appear to like the ship. Why the Austrians wanted them was beyond him. Rumors had it that someone in the Austrian Goverment was mad at someone else. Well orders where orders and beside the Austrians had payed in gold too. That was the last elephant time to get on board.

"The Dutch are retiring from Laos. We have to act quickly or else the French will beat us to the punch."
"Get me the Commander of the Army of Laos, also get me the French, Chinese, New Swiss, and German ambassadors in that order. Set up an appointment with the King, say its critical. Place all units on max alert."
August 1st 1904
News of a Dutch pullout in Laos has been greeted with celebrations in Bangkok. Lands stolen not long ago from The Kingdom of Siam are to be returned! The Army of Laos has been readied to step in as soon as the Dutch pullout to avoid chaos.

"Have we had a response from the Chinese?"
"Not yet, they havent responded to our inquiries about the ex-ACM CB either, and those where a year ago."
"Then we will ignore them. Begin moving the Army of Laos into those areas Wast of the Mekong (note all this is in North Indochina), and start sending small recce parties West across the river, I want to know what the Chinese and French are up to, but be careful we dont want to upset either party."

The Goverment has announced that begining today elements of the Army of Laos will begin crossing into Northern Laos (north of 17th parallel). Two regiments supported by a third are being deployed into that area. The French and Chinese have been informed of this move and the units have been warned to avoid any confrontation.

Vientiane, August 10th
The trumpeting of elephants did not elicit a response from the Laotian population. They where accustomed to elephants and most didnt even bat an eye. But the slight ground tremble did. Those curious enough where treated to an amazing sight. From the jungles to the west a row of war elephants in formation suddenly appeared. The leading battalion of the 3rd Cavalry regiment had reached Vientiane. Whitin minutes activity in the town had stopped as hundreds of people swarmed the streets to watch. They were not dissapointed as the battalion swiftly changed into parade formation. Row upon row of war elephants, company after company of infantry, platoon after platoon of cavalry, and finally more elephants pulling the artillery. The Thai Army had arrived in Laos...
August 15th
By decree of His Majesty, the territories of Laos (all of Laos north of the 17th parallel) have been incorporated into the Kingdom of Siam.

Bangkok, Wednesday evening October 5th, Wednesday
The Habsburg envoy was contemplating the lights floating down the Chao Phraya. It was the first full moon of the month, thus the time for the Holiday of Loi Krathing. So all the klong - channels - and the river were full of small flower adorned rafts with candles.
Jurgen Gescheftmacher, the new Austrian Minsiter, noticed his First Boy, Sootschin, crawling towards him with a peace of paper.
- "So sorry disturb Mastar! Masta Telegrafist said he kill Sootchin of not bring message to Mastar!"
He took the piece of paper and started to read, beckoning the Boy to stay where he was. Before finishing the first page he yelled at the servant:
- "Get the launch ready! We are going to town! And prepare boat to cary message to Ettapenkommendant!"
************************
Later this evening, after tracking down the still quite sober Foreign Affair's Minister.
- "You are probably aware, your Excellency, that the Habsburgs and the Manchus are quite close. The Habsburg ambassador to the Peking Court was even granted the unheard of honour of accompanying the Empress-Mother during her riding exercises."
The Minister nodded, well aware of the honour. The Saiamese monarch did not extend such favours to diplomats. And rarely to local greats either. What did the damn farang* want? Even with the North Indochina uncertainity, this WAS Loi Kratong night!
- "The Manchus are not happy with Saiam." - the Envoy shook his head in emphasise - "not happy". - "The Wrathful Empress - have you heard that she goes to sleep to the shrieks of flogged servants? - has been overheard talking about "eunuching the elephants threading on Middle Kingdom soil". The Manchus are contemplating sending 5 corps over the mountains - with Mekong as their objective. That would be the first wave of course. "
- "However, they have not yet made up their minds. Maybe it would matter if their friends, the Habsburgs, put in a word for their other friends, the Thai ... "
Corrupted from "Frank", meaning "foreigner".

Oh s***! But why is the Empress so mad? After all the only thing the Thai did was recover their lands, the same reason why the Chinese have just fought a bloody war for. Well maybe a little meddling in Vietnam but even there the Chinese have much more influence. Also the Thai see the Chinese as friends (however this will change everything) but every inquiry by His Majesty to the Empress lately has gone unanswered.
Maddox how much about this do I know? Have any of my spies NS or Thai gotten wind of this?

- "As we speak, the top Mandarins are conferring. Some want to stop at the watershed, some want to press on. They are evenly balanced, each party pressing on their arm of the scales. So fate balances on the edge of a razor sharp blade, uncertain on whch side to fall. And the Habsburg word does carry some weight in Peking. It might be the "poof" of air which will make the feather alighten on the right scale and tip it over."
The envoy sipped his drink.
- "Didn't - at some point in time - Saiam send trib ... err ... gifts to the Heavenly Court in Peking?"

"Gifts? Extortion might be a better word. In fact we had a perfect White Elephant we where going to send to Her Majesty. But if what you say is true, the King will not be amused. Siam is an independant country, we do not pay tribute. Must we remind the Chinese as to why they fought the last war? Was it not over lands they claimed as their own? Are they the only ones with a right to reclaime their lost lands? We have not claimed one bit more than what is rightfully ours.
We trusted the Chinese, we saw them as a friend, but this is a betrayal pure and simple.
Ask her "imperial" majesty why is this so? His Majesty will not agree to a gift under such conditions."
The minister was not amussed. What where the Chinese thinking? The King had to know this immidietly.
"But if it comes to that, the Mekong will run red with the blood of the Chinese" He murmured under his breath.

- "Yes, yes - extorsion it was. How very not cricket by the Manchus. But still it gives them some sort of claim to Saiamese, or ex-Saiamese lands."
- "How pretty the river looks, with the lights floating down to sea. The Mekong probably looks looks likewise. A pity if it - or the Chao Praya - was to run with blood. And blood in the Mekong means that it is the border again. Or worse."
A sip on the tea.
- "The White Elephant won't hurt, Your Excelency. A well guilded howdah either."
Another sip.
- "But it might not be enough. Your country's friendliness with the New Swiss is well known in Peking. Its scale could be exagerrated, of course, but due to their hatred of that nation they might consider Siam to be guilty without charge of whatever act they suspect it to be."
Slurp.
- "To avoid misery and bloodshed the Habsburg government - which is in good books of the Manchus - could be persuaded to intercede on behalf of your nation."
- "We are very satisfied with the elephants we bought - they are providing excelent service in Brasil. But we are quiet satisfied with their number and colouring."

"Extortion...Then what the Swiss said was true. A claim on our land? I guess that gives them a claim over the entire world. Yes we are firends with the Swiss but we ar...where friends with the Chinese and the Swiss never once complained. I would also like to point out that we wanted to purchase some ships from the Chinese but since they totally ignored our requests we where force to turn to the Swiss.
But what are we accused of? An unprovoked attack with no casus beli on a weak country has no honor. Is that what the Chinese want? To tarnish their image without cause?"
The minister shook his head.
"No we will not bow down. And if you will excuse me I have some business to do."

How to tarnish the already dark black image of the MK?
I doubt anyone forgot the massacres of Hong Kong and Shanghai, or the sacrifice of 10000's of farmers to exhaust the NS machineguns

I dont know. No sooner did China do those things that nations such as Spain, Austria, and almost the DKB joined her. Nations which historiclly would have supported the Swiss.
It was NS who ended up with a dark image, just for kidnapping one little kid who was not harmed in any way.

More like stabbed in the back. Now if I could only write decent propaganda...China would have replaced the Anahuacs as world target #1.

Ah yes, demonizing your enemy. Classical method of stirring a populace to hate and kill an enemy. Dehumanizing it related to this. It is easier to kill someone if you don't think of them as human.
Fortunately the Anahuac didn't need demonization, they provided enough through human sacrifice to get people to hate them.

Well I actually had reasons to hate the Chinese, they bombarded cities without decelration of war or a casus beli, they mutilated prisioners and in certain cases horribly tortured them, and they used their own people as human shields. Im not sure but I think the Chinese also attempted to use poison gas (Chlorine).
They certainly don't need demonization.

What was unfortunate for the New Swiss was they already had a questionable reputation that made all their claims (even of the truth) questionable. Thus it might be said that the greatest enemy of the Swiss was themselves, as they didn't fall from the outside, but from within. Thus hopefully a leason was learned by the remaining original New Swiss governmental forces in exile, and the same mistakes will not be repeated, lest they too fall into the trap of their own making.

Upon leakage of news of Franco-Manchu agreement, which would leave Laos to Saiam, not to Foreign Miister from Habsburg Minister.
- "My Gov't is extremally happy that Fate has smiled upon your Kingdom. I will be asking for my passport shortly, as I am being reassigned to Archangielsk"
