Yeah... I can tell right now that there will be a MAJOR divergence between Acadian and French designs. ;)

I hope that she doesn't have the topweight problems of "The Hotel", Jef, or that 2.8m of freeboard will likely just be 0.8m.

The Hotel fore barbette, well closed, with the 340mm gun, is installed one deck higher.
But, she is always "The Hotel"

With a 210 n. mi. cruising range, I don't exactly see these vessels entering 'open sea,' Sam.
I think these are strictly harbor defense boats... and by 'harbor defense' I mean something like Lower Mobile Bay (draw too much water for the Upper Bay), and not even something like the Chesapeake.

No reason to worry about it now, guys. When we get the ship design rules from the mods, it can easily be dealt with, or maybe it falls within. Who knows?

I was more referring to the 0.44 cross-sectional.

I kinda was as well.
We agreed that 0.50 was the minimum that a 'fast ship' could have and be considered fit to go to sea.
If the ship will never leave protected waters, then there would be nothing wrong- theoretically- with it having a weaker hull. Now, should these ships ever leave protected waters, they would be in grave danger of breaking up and sinking... but then again, so were most real early torpedo boats.

I see Jef already reworked it, but you do have a point. I'm stuck in N3/WW shipbuilding rule mindset, but your point is valid and perhaps should be considered. Or maybe, instead of having min/max let us build what we want (within reason) and if it fails (due to poor cross-sectional, low/high L:B, etc..) then it will be quite realistic. Look at the Japanese CLs that capsized after launch due to topweight. SS would proly give them a poor metacentric height, and they had a very fine L:B, probably outside our present rules allowance. Or the German inter-war CLs that had to be strengthened later due to hull cracks from the light work and all-welded construction used in their building. SS would probably have them at less the 1.00 overall or at least less than 0.80 cross-sectional. We should let ppl build ships like this, to many of our ships have been 'perfect' ideas with no glaring flaws, while IRL lots of ships had quite obvious flaws.

LOL... there are uglier ones to come!

Nice work, Jef!

P.S.
Another ship that proves that anything more than 1.00 composite strength will kill the ability to sim historic ships. This one is pretty much bang on target, but making it be 1.10 or heavier would make the tonnage too heavy.

QuoteUpdate: her predecessor Redoubtable was the world's first steel warship, so I assume these were all steel too. Our current thinking is we might require 1.1 for iron, 1.05 for early steel, and 1.0 for later steel.

After research...
Dévastation hull structure use steel but armor boards were in wrought iron.

So, I could rework easely the SS & have a strenght of 1.1

From the RULES

QuoteInitially Revealed Tech Tree
Years are: Years everyone can get it/Years only those with required establishment can get this. Establishments required are in (parens)

Naval Propulsion:
Baseline: Engine year: year laid down, 100% coal, simple expansion engines only
1890/1885: Engine year: year laid down, 100% coal, vertical triple expansion engines (Naval Propulsion Establishment)

Shipbuilding Materials:
Baseline: Iron ships, overall strength of 1.2 required
1890/1885: Early steel ships, overall strength of 1.1 required (Either the Capital Ship or Jeune Ecole Establishment)

Armor:
Baseline: Composite armor.
1890/1885: Harvey Nickel Steel armor, protection +1. (Capital Ship Establishment)

Artillery:
Baseline: Max muzzle energy 1900 million lb.ft^2/s^2
1890/1885: Max muzzle energy 2500 million lb.ft^2/s^2 (Guns gunnery and Fire control)

With a strenght of 1.2, I can't SS the real characts of the Dévastation.

with a strenght of 1.1 - 10900tfl -  is the top limit of the characts find on every infos source, NET or books.

Why still SS2 Jef? SS3 would make this ship awesome (probably buy you another foot or so on the belt).

What Carth said, plus: Deck mounts for 24cm guns? Ouch! I feel for the gun crew already.

In 1877, most mounts are really what we'd consider 'deck mounts'- including some of the muzzle loaders that have to have a block & tackle and some tongs to load the shell with!

SS2 because this is an old PC with just SS2

Terrible ala Rochambeau (ex USS Dudenberg)
The idea is to built a light BB with medium guns in battery with better rate of fire.

Cart is wright, no hoist at this time, just tackle.

Jef ;)

What SS3 to download?

SS3 in progress for Terrible class...

I have found some characs about the French 340mm gun for Dévastation

340 mm mod. 1875 de 21 cal, citadel installation, hydrauliques Farcot mounts, pointage + 7°/-5°, Rof 8 minutes, hydraulic tackle.

ROF...8 minutes !!!

We have enough time to go to the store-room, drinking a beer ... a fresh Guinness, for example !!!

Yeah- those old large caliber guns are hilariously slow.
Unfortunately, some people refuse to believe just how slow.

EDIT: here is a great page on how slowly they actually fired; check out the load times on the guns for H.M.S. Inflexible and the Caio Duilio... between 11 and 15 minutes PER SHELL!

The SS3 report says the 9.45-inch guns are in 2 twin Coles/Ericsson turrets (A/Y) but the drawing seems to indicate 4 single open barbettes (A/Y and 2 beam barbettes).

I do like the drawing however.

Actualy, the 1865 3rd class BB CERBERE is between 4200t - 4700t with some variations...
I made the drawing of the 4400t type with 4M1x240

The SS3 posted is with T2x240 mlle 1865 drawing by the famous ingenior Dupuy de Lome.

Why such a focus on ships already obsolete when the game start?

its possible he is trying to do like me and show a history in his fleet.  I supose your planing to laydown all your ships in 1879, thus giving yourself the largest most modern fleet possible?

The question was not addressed to you.

QuoteI supose your planing to laydown all your ships in 1879, thus giving yourself the largest most modern fleet possible?
And that silly statement is not worth to write even this much in reply.

That's not a focus but the 1861-1879 SS.

If there is a war or colonial conquests in 1880 -81-82 ..., these old ships -1861-1869 could be useful in secondary actions -with perhaps modern guns (?)

They could be useful too to close Dover Strait & protect British & French coasts vs Viking incursions  :)  :)  :)

Much part of the normal displacements are coming from SS made for N4.
I must rework all SS of the board to finalise the list.

So, the first, the Terrible class of 6 x 3rd class BB is actualy 4700t with a Belt of 120mm , not 4500t...  ???  ???  ???

Reduce the speed by 0.3kts ... Jef  ???  ???  ???

OK, now the total is 120 000t
I have changed the 1875-6400t-Valmy class by 1875-3570t-Alma class.

I could start to work seriously on the budget.

Here is the early drawing of the Rochambeau class
This class, Rochambeau & Lafayette are the older warships of the Marine Nationale.
In 1880, with a medium battleship armement & the relatively light armor, they are classed as Second Class Battleships.
Note the early searchilght on the bridge & the multiple pipes added for the crew confort.
