Title: Emergency cruisers for NUS
Post by: Jefgte on January 17, 2011, 07:19:22 AM
NUS need more CLs to scout & protect the Battleline vs DDs.

Here are 2 SS of an emergency 1920 program.
The speed is reduce from 32 to 27kts, enough to work near the 21-22kts BBs.
The lenght is limited to 120m to use more SlipWays & DryDock.

1st one. Casemated 9" guns would be very slow firing IMHO and not very useful for shooting at DD/TBs. You already have Escort Cruisers w/ bigger guns for shooting at other cruisers/small BCs, these need to be able to engage quickly moving targets and still pack enough punch to stop them cold. 6" pretty much fits that bill perfectly.

I agree partialy...

9" guns have slow ROF vs DDs but are better @ long range than 6".
They could engage enemy scouting force too (CLs).
a hit on a DD could be devastating & serious on a CL.
Note that the 9" project use 2M2x120 vs DD too.

There was a fair amount of discussion on that issue regarding my 18cm guns, however those are at the border of what was historically handworked/casemented/mount & hoisted. Eventually, while I went with the 18cm, I did so under the premise that they may be  (or may not be) a defensible mistake- something that looks better on paper... which it certainly does in short combats.

Ostensibly one of the reasons for the Washington 'heavy' cruisers to be 8" is those required powerworking to be feasible and so made a good breakpoint.  A casemented 9" gun would simply be terribly slow to train, load, ram etc. Meanwhile small DD hulls are really only sightable out so far, and then only from the fighting tops, not the main director.

very handy size capable but cheap cruisers  :)

but  no superfiring fwd - what is plan on that?

and is MB not a bit shallow at 9'?

The last SS is with superfiring mounts - a classic AB-XY disposition - abble to engage 2 DDs.
Note the heavy torpedo armament.

I wonder what would happen if you set it up with 8x6" instead of 10x6 with the savings put into speed and freeboard (for seakeeping) 29knts seems a bit slow with some of the DDs coming out if she is intended for that. If she is meant as a PC destroyer, then her armor and speed might be a bit light. As is, I see her as a flotila leader/scout cruiser.

Nice small, fast and powerful ship.
But I think the less than 3 meter wide armor belt are pretty much useless.

An interestingly economical ship. Similar in concept to the RN's WW1 era "destroyer killers", IE the Arethusas, C class and D class, but with a more modern armament layout. These would make useful destroyer leaders I think.

Could you get 30 knots on similar displacement by reducing protection?

Yeah, speed costs length. All in all, that's not a bad ship though. The extra length could help with congestion, etc. and make for a little better ship.

My guess is, for ~3500 tons, you might be able to get splinter protection over the machinery spaces too. An interesting concept to me. It's not much more than an overgrown destroyer, but then again, that's ok.

I like that. I don't suppose the NUS would be interested in some export work for the Ottomans in the future though, huh? I can think of lots of useful roles for a ship like this in the Med and Red Seas.

Agree - this size of ship very handy for Med - I looked at this last year

- and think at @ 28-29 knots and low seakeeping (it is the Med.) you can get a DD design with 5 x 150 mm (5 x 1) - and bit of armour (30/40mm) - for gun mounts + armour patch for Mags - a 'Destroyer Gunship'

  - not so robust as small CL - but much cheaper - can afford more - operate in small squadrons ....
