Another case of fools who shouldn't have been permitted to keep a dog. I know of enough people who won't understand their dog's behaviour, misinterpret it, anthropomorphise it, and then get bitten by the thoroughly frustrated mutt. Savagely mauled in the case of 2 close friends even, people who wouldn't harm a fly and could not understand why poor old Socrates growled at them. They didn't see the need for discipline. They thought that talking calmly and finding a shrink would solve the problem. Actually, both being shrinks was the problem.
The problem was solved when the cops killed the poor beastie, after both humans ended up in hospital.
And to think that Socrates was as smooth as melted butter in my hands, obedient and eager to please, happy as a pig in the mud when I picked up the brush for grooming... >:( As my mother, veteran teacher in obedience dog school, uses to say: "there are no bad dogs, there's only bad masters".

Jef, that is AWESOME.
Now, I must find out if the entire movie exists in English subtitled form.

Second thing I noticed... "Hey! The Russians speak Russian!"

Man... I could never call that 'easily', but I must say that her skipper must be a man born to his job. I don't know how he's making any of those maneuvers, as half the time neither his screws nor his rudders are in the water!
Have hauled in the "Great battle of the Japan Sea" (a bit more than 5 days) and watched it. An interesting movie. Looks to be a fansub. Also the date "February 14, 1938" in the subtitles was a bit weird. :)
Having watched that bit from the link, I expected the movie to be about Tsushima, but it is more than just that one battle. You see quite a few other things about the Ruso-Japan war as well. Tsushima itself starts after about 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Few pics taken from the movie.

The other option I'd considered was a terraformed Venus, so. Just... someplace more interesting than Earth, but not requiring torturous weirdness and alterations.
I was actually thinking of a world set in the 1890's where Russia had couquered Germany, and France was like in this timeline, sorta a repeat of Nverse II, but more defined toward Russia.
David Drake put out a couple of novels in the '90s centred on a terraformed Venus. Everybody lived in submarine habitats, because the surface was uninhabitable (mutated flora and fauna - extremely violent) and staged battles of mercenery fleets were used to decide conflicts. Always thought that'd be a neat sim premise.
Surface action , and the Seas of Venus.
Aircraft are suicide due the railguns used. Only gliders have a chance of survival.
(the same premisse as used in the legacy of the Aldenata universe, the aliens have the next best thing to a perfect AA)
Actualy, for Navalism the perfect enviroment, lots of archipelago's, the big cities are beneath the waves.
No large armies- only very lethal platoon level landwar, and no aircraft.
I know the books, though actually I was thinking of... http://www.worlddreambank.org/V/VENUS.HTM (http://www.worlddreambank.org/V/VENUS.HTM)
Seapole or Jaredia'd be workable, too.

As IU have said before Many times, Personaly I think we ought to just use the Real world map again. Maybe a few changes, but honestly other than the speed of combat (and not much can be done about that) im quite satisfied with the Nverse.
And if we start it with large parts of the world Uncontrolled we can have lots of fun. I would be more in favor of the realworld devided up into territories and lets go to it.... Less fantasy not more....

I don't really care fantasy or not. Happy to feature the beer-drinking Bavarian Dwarves ... whoops foreshadowing.
The two things that interest me is depth to the history so that some countries "just don't" like each other- which is fairly well done here.
Another is to have primary and secondary resources so you have an idea of which trade routes and alliances might be of import to you. We have the real world to fall back on here, but on a completely fantasical or substantially altered world that would not be so.

My new diet guru:
Q: Doctor, I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?
A: Your heart only good for so many beats, and that it...don't waste on exercise. Everything wear out eventually. Speeding up heart not make you live longer; it like saying you extend life of car by driving faster. Want to live longer? Take nap.
Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiency. What does cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So steak is nothing more than efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef also good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And pork chop can give you 100% of recommended daily allowance of vegetable product. Ice Cream even better - everything Cow eats in one package!
Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: No, not at all. Wine made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that mean they take water out of fruity bit so you get even more of goodness that way. Beer also made of grain. All people who don't drink unhappy - happy people live longer so drink more. Bottom up!
Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have body and you have fat, your ratio one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio two to one, etc.
Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can't think of single one, sorry. More people killed running on street than lying on couch. My philosophy is: No pain...good!
Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU NOT LISTENING! Food are fried these day in vegetable oil. In fact, they permeated by it. How could getting more vegetable be bad for you?!?
Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise muscle, it get bigger. You should only be doing sit-up if you want bigger stomach.
Q: What about food additives?
A: You want to complain about something for free? If it added - must be better - like fuel additive!
Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are you crazy?!? HEL-LO-O!! Cocoa bean! Another vegetable! It best feel-good food around!
Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming good for your figure, explain whale to me..
Q: Is getting in shape import_ant for my lifestyle?
A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!
Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.

Very true. However, under fire in less than 'nice' seas the RoF may not be that off. Especially considering, AFACR, Austria used 'German' style brass case fixed rounds which would be heavier than RN style bagged charge rounds.
At least IIRC the figures I've seen on Bismark, the German-style rounds decreased cycle time, by decreasing complexity, so the additional weight was apparently manageable.

Some family members that live in the UK are confused about Belgium and the Netherlands.
QuoteI can't be the only one confused by Belgium and the Netherlands.
I saw this movie that was set in Holland, and I was trying to figure
out what language they were speaking.
But the first thing you'll find if you try to look up Holland
is that it's not really the name of a country.
It turns out Holland is actually the Netherlands.
So nobody speaks Hollandaise.
Holland is actually just two states (actually provinces) in the Netherlands.
But, just to make sure we're totally confused, people still call the Netherlands "Holland."
They do speak Netherlandic in the Netherlands, but nobody calls it that; everybody calls it Dutch.
And the people who live there aren't Hollandaisers or Netherlanders.
They're Dutch. Even the ones who don't speak Dutch, I guess, are Dutch.
The ones who don't speak Dutch are the Frisian-speaking Dutch; they don't live in Holland, they live in Friesland.
Maybe they call themselves Frisians. But Friesland and Holland are both in the Netherlands.
Now the Dutch aren't the only ones who speak Dutch. Right below the Netherlands is Belgium.
More than half the people in Belgium speak Dutch. But the people who live in Belgium aren't Dutch. (perhaps in the future ?)
Even the ones who speak Dutch. They're Belgians.
But Belgians don't speak Belgian.
Are you still with me?
The people in Belgium who speak Dutch live in a place called Flanders.
In the same way that Holland is and isn't the Netherlands,
Flanders is and isn't Belgium.
Flanders is north Belgium. (Belgium actually used to be part of the Netherlands;
it could therefore also be considered as the Southern Netherlands [1], or the higher low lands.)
Now they don't speak Belgianese in Belgium; they speak Flemish, which is actually Dutch.
There isn't really a language called Flemish [2].
So the Dutch Belgians are Flemings. The ones that don't speak Dutch are Walloons.
Seriously. They're called Walloons. And they live in Wallonia. (I am not making this up.)
But, as you can probably guess by now, they don't speak Walloonian.
They speak French. [3]
So by now, you might be developing the same opinion: they should just call the whole
region "Dutch-land" and be done with it. But wait, that sounds a bit like "Deutsch-land "
(Germany), doesn't it?
Well, guess what: according to http://www.geocities.com/mikenassau/BlackDutch.htm,
"Dutch is the English form of Deutsch in German (in Dutch, it's "Duits").
[Dutch] has come to mean the people of the Netherlands only in English recently; it originally meant all speakers of German in the broadest sense. The Dutch called themselves Nederduitser /
Nederduitse (Nether German, low germans) until recently, when they switched to Nederlander (low
landers)." I don't know if this is true, but it sounds plausible...
So here's what you need to know for the test:
* Holland = Netherlands, and most people speak Dutch there, but some people speak Frisian.
* The English Language is part of the Germanic language group. We have our own little subgroup, the Anglo-Frisian group, with just two members:
the English language and the Frisian language. Dutch is in the group next door to us: the Netherlandic-German
group (Netherlandic (Dutch), Afrikaans, the German language, and the Yiddish language).
[1]To add to the confusion, in English "nether" means "down below" (as in "nether world" or
"nether regions"). I don't know what "nether" (neder) means in Dutch, but it would make sense that
it means "low"; they do call these northern countries "the low countries." According to online
sources, "neder" also means "beneath". One online source claims that "Holland" came from "Holt-land" meaning forest-land, but this same source claimed that "neder" meant "flat". [back]
[2] Nearly 58 percent of the people in Belgium speak Dutch. "Flemish" is the collective term used for the Dutch dialects spoken in Belgium. It is not a separate language, though the term is often used to distinguish the Dutch spoken in Flanders from that of the Netherlands.
"Flanders" is the name for the Dutch-speaking northern region of the federal state of Belgium. [back]
[3] This actually seems less silly when you learn that "Waloon" is actually a derivative of the French "Valone," and isn't actually pronounced "wah-loon.
Well that sounds like a good summery to me, although it lets the issue sound more complex than it is.
I don't speak Dutch or Nederlands, put I'm pretty sure that the confusion about the word "neder", whether it mean "low" or "flat" is moot - at least I understand it as both.
It's even more complex.
As Babs pointed out, Belgium has some German speaking parts, a left over from WW I. The "Oostkantons".
Politicaly those are joined to Walonia, much to the chagrin of the locals, who cultural and gramatical lean closer Flanders.
Also, if "Holland" and "Nederland" already are confusing, imagine the bewildering effect to learn that Flanders is actualy 5 provinces. East and West Flanders, Antwerp, Brabant and Limburg.
With Brabant and Limburg having simular named provinces in the Netherlands.
Then we add in the waffle-iron politics (this means, if Flanders recive €X in infrastructure, Walonia revieves the same amount in simular infrastructure, with as prime example, when Flanders got to expand the port of Zeebrugge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_of_Bruges-Zeebrugge), Walonia got money for the boatlift of Strépy Thieu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Str%C3%A9py-Thieu_boat_lift).
Compounded by the fact we have more governments than an avarage super power. And that there are certain laws making it possible that certain political minorities can block law proposals just by invoking those laws.

I dunno. This sounds a lot like the system of government in the US, which holds power often in thrice nested municipalities, then in the states, and finally in the federal government, and especially like our Senate, which is always subject to becoming victimized by the tyranny of the minority (no matter which party is in power).
"Democratic" government, no matter it's form, is by necessity a messy exercise in consensus, or anti-consensus and usually fairly inefficient animal. Oligarchic or autocratic forms generally appear more efficient, at least on their face. One could (and many have) write long long books on this subject.
In other words, it's not peculiar to Belgium.
Mario, that is almost as hard as explaining the meaning of the word 'Yankee.'
Very interesting history/cultural lesson there.

Clarinet?
1. four key trumpet.
2. trombones
3. french horns
4. violins w some percussion.
5. choral
Where is there a woodwind solo or woodwinds until the choral?
I wish there was some logical way to make the Bavarian anthem a bagpipe tune.
The closest I can think of is Rupprecht is the Jacobite heir, and so could do that as his tune, but I don't think the Jacobites happened here.

Ask them ;). You wouldn't be the first one to do this, though most of them end up somewhere else (e.g. Iceland) or in museums.
Just keep in mind they run on donations only.
The 44.2 m "Wilhelm Kaisen" is likely going to be the next Ship to be decommissioned next year. It's the 2nd sister ship of the "John T. Essberger" which by now has safely arrived in Speyer. Her 3rd sister was sold to China in 1988 and later scrapped.
WoW!
LOL... I wouldn't think it would be in my price range, Nobody.
A similar vessel would be our own Point-class Coast Guard cutters. I recently saw one of these listed for the bargain price of 519,000 Euros. It had, of course, been out of commission for some time now and already been refitted as a dive boat.
I would like to, as a sort of 'life project', acquire something like an old shrimp boat or crew boat and reconfigure her as a houseboat. Having a vessel which was self-righting would make for a much safer vessel...
Of course, me being virtually broke (plenty of money incoming, but little in the way of savings) prevents me from acting on it at this time.

Same here. ;D
Although self-righting is good for the ship, it is not necessarily for the people on board.
Anyway I did ask them and got an answer already. The one you likely saw in the capsize-test video, the 19.9 m, 38 tons "Eiswette" (~ice bet) (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/SK_Eiswette_(II)) cost 5 million to build, tough it has only one engine and no living quarters. The current (and most likely for the next 25 years) flagship Hermann Marwede (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/SK_Hermann_Marwede) (46 m, 404 tons) was build for 13 million in 2003.
They did answer that decommissioned ships are usually to other SAR organizations (if they are interested), but in rare cases are sold to private persons or firms for "six digit figures", as it happend with the Eiswette (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/SK_Eiswette) in November 2008 and the Fritz Behrens (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/SK_Fritz_Behrens) in August 2009.
Anyway wouldn't it be just plain cool to have something like this (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermann_Helms_(Schiff)) as a "yacht"? Sturdy, fast, self-righting, living quarters for 4, radar echo-sounding, homing, autopilot, hospital a "daughter-boat" and the ability to get rid of annoying neighbors with 2200 tons of water per hour (600 liters a second) up to 130 m range through its two "fire fighting monitors".
Something else:The latest ship (SK 32) has left its slip. Can anyone explain me how that hull can have so little draft?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JmLId1GW2A (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JmLId1GW2A)
I mean, it's build from metal, not plastic. 57 tons of aluminum, to be precise.
QuoteCan anyone explain me how that hull can have so little draft?
Uhm... Empty hull? With lots of air inside? Made of aluminum which has a density of 2,800 kg/m3 while steel is in the 7,400-8,000 kg/m3 range?

Yes of course. But it looks like the hull is barley touching the water.
If I got it right, 57 tons of aluminum displaces 57 tons of water and 57 tons of water has a volume of 57m^3. Considering the SK 32's length (36,45 m) and beam (7,80 m), you will have a draft of about 20 cm (it's not quite right, because the length and beam decrease somewhat due to the shape of the hull when you go further down the hull). Considering the dimensions, 20cm is indeed not that much so you get that 'barley touching the water' impression.

Yes of course. But it looks like the hull is barley touching the water.
Also, she's TOTALLY light from the looks of the video... nothing aboard but the deckplates!
That would mean that she's not even going to be floating at 'light' displacement marks; she's only floating at the level for the hull's true displacement.
And yes, it would be awesome to have a yacht like the vessel you show there... Heck, if I could get something like that, my crazy Southron self might just take her off to the Gulf of Aden, pick up some 12.7mm Russians and a few RPGs at a weapons bazaar and start offering escort services to freighters! :D Who wants to go pirate hunting?
This is one of the type of boats I am seriously considering converting for a houseboat- it was only $35,000 but there was no real way for me to afford that ATM. Such a vessel would only be suited for river cruising, but in North America, that alone can get one most anywhere worth visiting.

If you're not interested in a (short) German lesson, jump to ~1:05.
YES that is one word, but one should add that it's a word which was specially composed to be as long as as possible (children compete in trying to create such words) and is of no use in daily life. Oh and if you wanted to say that word correctly, you would of course not be allowed to breath until you're finished.
On a different subject, dialects.
Yesterday I heard on TV someone commenting to a scene were people were talking in their dialect: "Isn't that nice, they are in Germany speaking German and I can't understand a word. That's what I would call a world cultural heritage."
So my question to you: Did that ever happen to you, that people were clearly speaking a dialect of your language and you couldn't understand a word they were saying?
That happens to me all the time. I live in the American South. ;)

So you compile words in Swedish as well? I bet that wouldn't be much shorter in German ;-)
My guess: north easter coast artillery voltage simulation installation material support system discussion length assist(?) works.
Does it actually mean something? Or is it just gibberish?
And for comparison the word he tried to say in German:
Oberdonaukanaldampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitänskajütenschlüsselbundanhänger.
Try guessing that meaning? (And it does have one! as it is an over-precise description of a certain object)
QuoteDid that ever happen to you, that people were clearly speaking a dialect of your language and you couldn't understand a word they were saying?
Well, the only place in the Netherlands where I don't understand the people when they talk the way they normally talk is in the areas where they speak Frisian. But Frisian is a language on its own rather than a dialect (a "sister language" according to wiki).
When I was in the army, there were two guys from Friesland in the platoon and during one of the maintenance sessions of the vehicles of the platoon, the two of them were discussing the maintenance procedures with each other in Frisian (at least I
think it was probably about maintenance procedures as I could not understand a word they were saying). Funny thing is that when I watch something from that area's regional news, with the subtitles I can actually pick up the all the words they are saying a lot better. The same is true with Afrikaans.

It is not gibberish, a tip would be to try and read it as german that is extreamly misspelled (that at least works in reverse quite allot of the time).
QuoteOberdonaukanaldampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitänskajütenschlüsselbundanhänger.
Without using google or any translation i would say: It is someting hanging around in the captains cabin on a canalboat and used when in a lock (sluss).
It is actually "schlüssel" = key
With my rusty German...
Oberdonau canal steam shipping company's captain's cabin keyring hanger (more likely a hook)
@Nobody: Is it the place where the Captain of a vessel of the Upper Danube Steamship Company hangs the keys to his cabin?
Probably that.
Being a "schlüsselbund" (keyring), it could also include keys to other things in his cabin (wardrobe, desk, chest, etc) or it could be a keyring with all the ship's keys on it which is supposed to be in the Captain's cabin at all times.

That's what I tried Korpen. Anyway my translation didn't become any better by further translating it to English. My translation is not becoming any better.
You are right with
The upper Danube canal steamship sompany and the captain's cabin.
However its not a hook or a place to find that key. A Schlüsselbund is a bunch keys, a Schlüssel(bund)
anhänger is something you add to a (or several) key(s), e.g. a sign or a souvenir. And while the English translation is keychain, I'm not sure it means entirely the same.
Of course there is the question of,"why does that need to be it's own word"?

Or in other words, it's probably the least Redneck place in all of Kentucky, (For what that's worth).

Of course there is the question of,"why does that need to be it's own word"?
Hmmm...
- because we can.
- its fun
- to save words. Let me remind you, its a composite word, if you wanted to describe that with the same precision without using composites you would have to add at least 1 to 2 additional words per component and all of those would have to be declended.

Sometimes I find things in my random wanderings that just make me say WOW... While I wasnt exactly a Bully in school I was part of the "in crowd" even though I never felt like I fit. I fouhgt ALOT in High School, not because anyone wanted to mess with me (I was Big Tough and had a horible temper) but because I stuck up for the little guy because even though I was popular I saw in him Myself.
This Video talked to me today so I felt I should share it with you the people I consider my "Friends"
