Starting things off, we're over halfway through building Sovereign of the Seas....so time to lay down the next ship in the progression.  A bit larger, more heavily armored with emphasis on deck for plunging fire and now very anticipated larger and larger bombs.  Deep torpedo protection.  And in a departure for Aztec Battleships, the end belts and decks are markedly thicker, enough to outright repel destroyer and quite a lot of cruisers guns entirely, which will keep hits to these areas from degrading performance.

Relentless, Aztec Battleship laid down 1938

Next, there are 3 of the Battle Class escort carriers.  With the expectation of both potential convoys in wartime and a slow wing of the battle line to escort, there's need for a few more escort carrier types.  The Battle Mk2 is slightly larger than the original, slightly better protected, and with a bit more AA (2 more twin 90mm DP mounts).  The odd-number 29 aircraft air group allows for some role expansion for its air group without avoiding the core competencies of scouting for the battle line, CAP, and finishing off crippled ships with small-group TB strikes.

And finally, in the vein of Destroyers, a new class of large DD leader will be looked at.  A lesson from the Mayan war, perhaps the wrong lesson, that Destroyers get chewed up in a fight quickly and need very hard-hitting guns, results in a design using the new 155mm/55cal DP gun, in it's single barrel configuration.  While the destroyer might be suitable only for the Caribbean Theater with its relatively short ranges, she is built to hit as hard as possible against surface ships, with her AA ability being considered moderate due to her weaker secondary AA and the slower RoF of the 155mm gun when compared to the 90 or 120.  To fit that much main gun onto a DD, a full 4 of them, plus torpedoes, accessories, and the necessary speed to hit 50%.....this ship is deficient in ASW, and AA, but built as a leader vessel made to take out enemy destroyers at range and quickly, with enough bulk to take a hit or two from standard destroyer weapons without any particularly ill effects.

6" guns on Destroyer hulls historically didn't fare so well for reasons Springsharp does not cover well.
Likewise 6" DP. ! One of the reasons I give many of my "innovative" designs a rest between the 1st of class and the rest.

I am strongly considering the 'Whirlwind' 8x435 30knt solely because you keep churning these out. I really prefer my 26 knot version, but there comes a point an Admiralty wants an 'equivalent' to the biggest baddest thing out there.

The Battle class has many of the 'short length' issues of many of the Parthian carriers. It's very similar to an updated Bazdari carrier.
Did they beat the drum slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the death march, as they lowered you down,
Did the band play the last post and chorus,
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

Looking at the SS for the DD, I've got a few edits I've got to make.  And yes, I concur that on the whole 6in guns don't work on DD hulls.  I figure this one tranche of DDs will be it for the 6in gun experiment on a DD hull, but it does make sense within the Aztec meta to build a 4 ship class of them to discover the losses in fire volume are not made up for with fire weight.

I worked on several BB ideas, most of them trying to integrate a dual DP battery of 155s in 2 gun and 3 gun arrangements with 120 or 90mm guns, but ultimately settled on just pushing the number of 120s up even more as the 155s either didn't fit, cut the AA capacity (which by 1938 we know we need) too much, or in the best variant left me with an 8 gun 155 broadside, and 90mm surface mounts which would be a lot of expose ammunition high in the ship and make no sense on a BB.

Yeah, my escort carriers will have trouble later on.  As I've already developed out my aircraft, I can see that they'll wind up like the historical escort carriers with air groups that can't always take advantage of the absolute pinnacle of combat aircraft.  The Catapults and the sheer power of the Corsair mean they'll likely be able to operate them as pure fighters (not with bombs or rockets), but they'll be severely limited in their other aircraft options (likely just a mix of Corsair and Sea Wolf, like the historic escort carriers ran pretty much purely FM2 Wildcats and Avengers).  Of course they're in existence not to launch airstrikes, but to carry fighters to protect the slower battleships, and a few TBs to work over cripples or maybe slow down a fast BB enough that a pair of slow BBs can catch it and kill it.  In that vein, they're perfectly adequate for purpose.

The first 'big' ship using the new 155mm/55 DP gun.  A modification of the venerable Lake-type, the Gulf class is more optimized for fighting smaller ships in a screening function, and at least in theory has a ferocious AAA suite with main and secondary DP batteries.

And a shift on the N-class.  Iteration after Iteration showed that it's just not reasonable to have 4 x 155/55s on a DD hull without sacrificing significantly.  A small ASW capability is added, as well as a fully capable AA suite and even a bridge expansion for a Squadron Commander and a couple of his personnel.  Lost is the aft superfiring 155 mount.

You can reduce the engines to 50% to improve seakeeping or misc weight...

Quote6" guns on Destroyer hulls historically didn't fare so well for reasons Springsharp does not cover well.
Likewise 6" DP. !

Quote6" guns on Destroyer hulls historically didn't fare so well for reasons Springsharp does not cover well.
Likewise 6" DP. !

I agree with Kaiser.

Oh I agree as well.  This is a deliberate overreach by the RAN to have division leaders with serious punching power.  They'll discover that it's just not worth it and shift back to a more reasonable 5 or 6 120mm guns.

Spent more time on the Gulf-type.  I can't get down to Byzance's size of cruiser for this similar concept without the tech that won't hit this turn.  But I can have a fairly robust ship.

Looking at 1939, when the new Cruiser tech becomes available.  There have been a lot of 'emergency program' cruisers built over the years, including the Eagles, Towns, etc.  And most of them, are in need of either a major refit, or a replacement.  The Towns and Eagles would both need VERY deep refits, and honestly wouldn't be worth it for the amount of work being put into those hulls, better to use them as is for secondary roles until it's time to scrap the remaining ships of those classes.

Instead, a new 'light corvette' type is in the works, a type to replace all of the older ships with one that combines adequate speed, range, and other capabilities for escort work, with a modern AA suite, modern fire control and even space for the newfangled 'radar' if it's ever turned into something you can mount on a ship this size.

On the Mountain class.. it's the same tonnage battle I keep fighting with my Boran/Tomyris class frigates,
but a 25mm bulkhead 1.25m inside the hull will stop progressive flooding from leaks from near-misses, but really lacks the depth for more.

I'd also be curious what the rotating weight of one of those gun houses is in a M&H system without any power assist....hmm 114tons. Take Omaha's tinplated 6"/53s twins at 51.8t while the 5.25"DP on KGV was 77t and slow.
So 114 with or without Power Assist, that's likely slow to train. Ironically a turret is only 120t and so would be cheaper than M&H with PA.

Going back quite a ways - on the Gulf class 12x155mm cruiser, does the TDS actually help much?
With a 2.5m depth on either side, and only 30mm, it's not robust, but it's 10% of the armor weight.

Also, 0.5m could be added to the bow and might help that wet forward.

Lastly, dropping to 10,000 gets you 0.9 hull with the final cruiser tech, which might mean minor sacrifices to get down.
Did they beat the drum slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the death march, as they lowered you down,
Did the band play the last post and chorus,
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

You have some points.  Definitely some issues with weights on stuff.  Hmm, I didn't review the difference on weights as much, probably should have developed the 155 with a twin and triple turret instead of a twin m&h.

I tend to put a TDS on stuff, it might not be strictly necessary, but then it's kind of become the norm.  I'll play around with them some more though.

The Gulf's TDS takes it from 2.8 torpedoes to 3.7.  I think that's actually enough to be the difference between a torpedo hit being 'pull out all the stops to save the ship' and 'we need to take her into port but she can finish the immediate fight'.  Or an air dropped torpedo being something that puts the ship immediately in drydock or something that can be partially repaired at an atoll by a salvage ship and pumped out.
