I...generally concur with the notion that deck parking basically means more surface area for planes; one still has to pay for the tonnage costs associated with the airgroup.

I think Tac's numbers are probably reasonable and don't have a specific alternative to put forward.  Enterprise and the Brit carriers are good examples; I don't recall reading anything to suggest Japan used a deck park at any point (not that they'd have had the aircraft for it in the later stages of the war).
