The Nashville class mounts the antiquated muzzle-loading 6" 55pdr. These guns are of sufficient vintage that they are outperformed by the secondary 3" guns, and are only retained as 'closers' to punch large hulls in an enemy ship's hull at close range. Old, slow ships, these are laid up in reserve at La Paz on the Pacific coast. It is expected that they will be scrapped here as soon as possible.

The 36 ships of the Nashville, San Diego and Corpus Christi classes present the CSN with a massive block obsolecence problem. The vast anchorage at La Paz is filled with this small fleet of ships, all awaiting scrapping. These ships are effectively a repeat of the Nashville class, with the same armament and low speed, but with range that is on the edge of acceptability.

In 1904 the first six ships of the Laredo class were sold to Rohan, however the CSN chose to retain the final two vessels for service at the new Antigua Station. They would receive a thorough freshening, including the replacment of their old-fashioned engines by modern triple-expansion units and a rearming with the new 55-pdr gun. The underwater torpedo tubes were also removed, replaced by a pair of single above-water tubes in the former location of the midships casemate.

The Miami class is the first Confederate third class cruiser since the mid-1880s to mount a 6" gun. Two 100pdr weapons, disposed of fore and aft, supplement the 4", 25pdr guns on the broadside. These are also very fast ships, with a long range. Lacking in numbers, the class is likely to be selected for further construction.

The Pasadena class of third-class cruisers only just made the construction budget for 1898. Essentially prototypes for an improved class of potentially faster, better-armed cruisers, they are armed with the 4.85", 55pdr gun. Controversially, though, the traditional armoured deck was eschewed in this class, favouring instead a six-foot deep armoured belt. Opinion is divided as to the relative merits of these two armour schemes, but the chosen course was dictated by the need to save weight.

Tulsa was sunk by Island Commonwealth forces early in 1901, sparking the brief war, while Tijuana was lost under mysterious circumstances immediately following the conflict.

Ship tends to be wet forward

Ship space, strength and comments:
Space - Hull below water (magazines/engines, low = better): 205.6 %
- Above water (accommodation/working, high = better): 91.8 %
Waterplane Area: 9,372 Square feet or 871 Square metres

Hull strength (Relative):
- Cross-sectional: 1.00
- Longitudinal: 1.34
- Overall: 1.03
Hull space for machinery, storage, compartmentation is extremely poor
Room for accommodation and workspaces is adequate
Ship has slow, easy roll, a good, steady gun platform
Good seaboat, rides out heavy weather easily
So 'ere's to you, Fuzzy-Wuzzy, at your 'ome in old Baghdad;
You're a pore benighted 'eathen but a first-class fightin' man;
We gives you your certificate, an' if you want it signed
