Destroyers have over 50% of engine displacement, often 52, 53, or 54%.
TGBs only have 50% of the displacement reserved for the engines.
Weight saving is reserved for the installation of a powerful artillery, often 120mm guns and 4 torpedo tubes.

The first TGBs were built in 1892 with a speed of 21kts, sufficient at the time. The most recent show 25kts.

In 1915, The Byzantine Empire confirmed this concept and the missions for the next TGBs.
1 - Colonial work, patrols, escorts.
2 - Close protection of large combat ships vs Destroyers and MTBs.
3 - Scouting & reinforcement of the combat fleet.

In 1923, All TGB are affected to the Colonial Patrols.

A more powerful ships was build with the 140t torpedo boat class. Abble of engaging enemy torpedo boats at great distances,
3 x 120/45 guns were installed on 500t hulls. The speed of 21 kts was considered sufficient to protect the 18 kts battle line.

Annual Naval Exercises in the Black Sea with the Battle Fleet showed that the 500t TGBs were exellent to protect the Battleships against enemy Torpedoes attacks.
As a result, the Admiralty built in 1897-98-99 another more powerful serie.

With the 750t destroyer class, 12x750t TGB were built.

TGB750, Byzantine Empire TGB laid down 1906

in 1914 Re Classed as "Destroyer" then renamed D750 class

In 1922, their too low speed made them reclassify in the category of TGB and assigned to the far east colonies.
For their patrols, a long-range radio (25t) was installed in 1922H2.
