By 1928, the last of the Artesmia Sailing Frigates had been removed from  frontline service,
and four were retained for training purposes.

The secondary and tertiary guns are converted to modern AA for training purposes,
as they are well aware sails would drastically effect sky arcs...

Named after Grand Admiral Artemisia, a famous admiral from 480BCE. She was known for leading her navy against the Greek City States.

These are the last of Parthia's sailing ships. Starting in the late 1860s there was an expansion of the fleet to establish a naval presence on the sea lanes of the Indian Ocean. In 1872 squadrons were assigned to Zanzibar and the Straits of Malacca.  There they conducted anti-slavery work (East Africa) and trade protection. These were the survivors of the Byzantine-Parthian war, when Suez allowed the Byzantine fleet to concentrate and destroy the small Parthian. A preceding similar class, built in 1886, has been retired. The 1894 class was originally deployed on a global basis, with 'homeports' with the Atlantic and Bengal Expeditionary Fleets (Cape Verde, Malacca).

Converted in 1930 to 'Tall Ship' training vessels.

Armor :
The citadel is expanded fore/aft 12m (adjusted bow/stern %) to ensure critical systems fit below.

A protective deck, crowning at +1.42m and descending to -1.06m is fitted.
The deck has a 30mm crown, and 65mm slopes the entire length of the ship.

With a full rig, this vessel could do 12. knots at a cost 45 above deck, 195 below deck

This vessel is full rigged
The Persians  believed the full rigging, the modest bunker (195t) and small size / draft means the vessel can have nearly unlimited range, calling on any anchorage world wide. All while not belching a cloud of coal smoke on the horizon. This series of raiders were full rigged sailing vessels. An anachronism in many ways, the purpose wass to allow these raiders to operate around the world, threatening enemy mercantile traffic everywhere. The opposition is not expected to field substantive forces, but the combination of guns did make this vessel capable of combating most light cruisers of the time successfully.  As the 1900s ground on, this role became obsolescent, and then obsolete. While most were scrapped, 4 were chosen for conversion to sailing training ships.

Quote"half hull speed = 5% normal displacement weight, every additional knot = +1% normal displacement weight, every additional knot above hull speed = +2% normal displacement weight"
This is the alternate means of calculating sailing rig.
With a normal of  3,337  a 1/2 hull speed (9.065kts) costs : 166.85t
For every additional +1  knot the cost is 33.37t
10kts : 200.22
11kts : 233.59
12kts : 266.96
13kts : 300.33

Completed in 1899, the Scythian class became rapidly outdated as engine tech changed.

Part of the Early stacked casement forward armament, they were completed with a high forecastle to keep the forward casements dry.

The Parthians view this as an opportunity to try a small hull 'sentry ship' design. This will serve as a picket for the Battleline, and given +4knots to allow positioning.
Batteries, like on a submarine, will be fitted to allow silent 'creep'.

The ship will be given depth charges and ASW sensors to evaluate the ability of larger vessels such as this to  engage in ASW work

Armament will be revised to allow engagement of charging torpedo craft, but against cruisers the ship will remain behind friendly cruisers.

While consideration was given to outfitting as a Sub tender, it was decided not to blur the roles.

The 1902 SC-5 Samaritan Class is a repeat of the 1899 SC-3 class,
but served as the Turbine testbed.

Unlike the 1899 class, turbo-electric drive is not needed.
But silent running on Batteries has some appeal still.

For one thing, if you're trying to use enhanced hydrophones to "hear" screws over the horizon, being able to shut down and creep on electrics is a distinct advantage.

Designed as a cruiser destroyer leader to accompany the fleet.

The 4 'cheek' casement guns in the raised forecastle bring forward fire up to 6 x 120mm,
and a broadside also fo 6 guns.

Laid down in 1910, the 90mm AA mount is not available, so the 90L45 QF in the Mk IV mounting is used.

Only splinter armor is fitted, to keep HE shells from penetrating to the vitals or taking out the bridge.  The magazines and machinery barely fit under the protected deck.
The guns have only spray sheilds.
The protected deck is 20mm on the flat and 50mm on the slopes

Range is 21 days at 12knots with a 10% reserve
This is a week more than the vessel is expected to need, but the extra fuel is to allow an emergency reserve for her associated Destroyers.

Weaponry :
1899 120L45 QF in Mk IV mount & Mk III Casement
1899 90L45 QF in Mk IV mount

Misc. Weight :

"Royal Road" , Parthian Royal Mail Cruiser laid down 1911
Basic refit 1922
Refurbished 1930

RMC - 1 : Royal Yacht
RMC - 2 : Training Cruiser

The 1930 Refurbishment split this class into two types - A Royal Yacht and a Training Cruiser.

Laid down in 1911 and intended to place one on the Parthia-Hawaii-Kalifern route, and one on the Parthia - Ria route
They  carried higher priority cargo and personages than the standard mail service.  By 1930 the combination of undersea cables and both cargo-liners and liners with respectable speeds rendered the need for this task obsolescent.

Royal Road - Yacht
Royal Mail - Training Cruiser

With undersea cables well established, and regular shipping routes, the need for the specialized courier cruisers has deminished.

Completed in 1913, the time to refurbish or scrap will be soon (1933).
The decision has been made to explore extending their life and convert them to an official yacht and a training cruiser.

Turbo-Electric drive is used as it is the smoothest and provides large amounts of electicity for any needs.
Steam was chosen as it is more common in the fleet, and so better for engineers to train on.
Further fuel oil is a more commonly available fuel than Diesel at this time. Plus it means the old bunkers can be refurbish but unaltered.

The Parthians are concerned that naval combat is looking
like rock>paper>scissors>rock.

The descriptions from the Sino-Japanese war of 'skirmish' lines seems to be an effective means of dealing with light fast raider forces. There seems to be further emerging threats such as aerial or undersea, both of which can likely be best handled if detected further out.

All of this suggests having a specialized 'sentry' ship, which simply needs sufficient speed to manuever around fleet elements.
While the Parthian battleline is 20knots, the newest heavy ships are 26 knots, and the older ACs are 27knots. So a speed of roughly 27-28 knots is needed to ensure widest utility.

As they would conceptually be advanced to ~18000m towards any onrushing MTB/DD night attack, they need to be fitted with sufficient fire control to divide fire and rapidly destroy attackers on both sides of the vessel.

Seakeeping is not critical, as those light attackers would do poorly in heavier seastates.

Due to poor development of ASW techniques, they are fitted with depth charges and hydrophones, and equipped for battery use 'on station' while hunting. In reality they are far to big and expensive to be good choices in this role. The hydrophones will help pick up distant propellers though.

Basically it's a down-scaled USS Omaha with a 130mm main armament instead of 152mm.

It's meant to provide ships to replace the antiquated Artesmia class of sailing frigates
as well as provide fleet 'skirmishers', colonial patrol etc.
All better done with a small cruiser than a big destroyer.

The armament is meant to be reminiscent of USS Omaha,
with double stacked casements fore & aft on the freeboard deck and superstructure.

While Omaha had 6" this has 130mm as it's meant to engage small light cruisers and destroyers, or conduct offensive raids of it's own.

With it's long range, this is also viewed as a replacement for the Artesmia class Armored Frigates conducting high seas commerce raiding. The only armor is protection around the magazines to ensure they don't explode.

The Sayyida class is viewed as an alternative to the Artesmia II class.

Main role is independent operations as a patrol vessel, 'show the flag' and general patrol.

Secondary is screening the fleet or independent raids,
acting as a destroyer or torpedo boat leader in the latter case.

Speed of 29knots to be able to operate with most
Parthian Cruisers.  It is NOT the 30 or 31 desired.

Opting for a few hard hitting QF guns vs. lots of lighter,
the 4x 165mm are expected to wreck a destroyer with a hit,
while providing the ability to hurt a fellow cruiser close in.

The protective deck with 35mm crown and
50mm slopes is meant to provide defense against destroyer
level weapons.

Night Fighting and reconnaissance abilities
Plotting room for DD Formation

Oceanic range for Pacific operations is preferred,
but difficult. Still 8000*1.10 = 8800nm, not bad.

The lead vessel was built and put through sea trials before the remainder of the class was laid down.
This allowed for the Diesel-electric system, 163mm ASW howitzer, and command functions to be trialed,
and non-substantial alterations to the designed layout be made for the follow on vessels to allow
greater efficiency.

Intended as a regular-service sloop, the role is more similar to that of a Destroyer,
but it is built to Cruiser-standards of comfort, redundancy, and reliability.
A squadron plot room allows coordination and charting of efforts in ASW, patrol, screen and bombardment efforts.

Theoretially, the 90s will discharge their stick bombs, and then switch to common, while the 163 engages with flat nosed shells which will penetrate the water and hopefully hole or damage the sub.

Designed as an ASW sloop to accompany the battlelines, they are intended to coordinate to prosecute and kill any submarine contacts, catching up to the battlelines later. In fleet combats they are not expected to engage, but will have an auxiliary rescue role.

Ship has slow, easy roll, a good, steady gun platform

Manban = Watchdog

Much the Same ship as before, but with a tad more BC and sacrifing a knot
but gaining 'good seakeeping' and swapping the 118/21 (apparently /21 not /23) for the a 163/20 Howitzer to engage submarines at or near the surface.
Range is also greatly increased.

Theoretially, the 90s will discharge their stick bombs, and then switch to common, while the 163 engages with flat nosed shells which will penetrate the water and hopefully hole or damage the sub.

Did they beat the drum slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the death march, as they lowered you down,
Did the band play the last post and chorus,
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest
