The Rock Doctor

#1
South Sudan

This is for parking notes on South Sudan, which the Ottomans are currently gnawing on.

Assumptions:

-->1900 Population = 1/8 of current(ish) population.  Estimate is 988,000.  Actual current population of South Sudan then or now not well constrained.

-->Proportion and distribution of tribal groups remains generally similar over time.

General observations:

-->Tribal antipathies a thing, remain to present day.  Ottomans can attempt to divide/conquer.

-->Cattle possession a prime indicator of wealth and status; essential for men to obtain wives.  Theft and related violence is commonplace even now.

-->Some groups more pastoral than others; wet/dry seasons force migration for farming and grazing

-->Some groups more decentralized than others.  Nuer have 26 sub-groupings.

-->Religion at this point mostly likely local.  Historical Christian missionaries had more success with some groups than others depending on what the local religion was and how it related to Christianity.  Probably similar outcome here with Muslim missionaries.
