Did they beat the drum slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the death march, as they lowered you down,
Did the band play the last post and chorus,
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

Warning: Calibre too large for machine gun - 4th battery

Rebuilt in 1898-99.

This design is a compromise of the OTL Italia and Lepanto variations. more Lepanto.
OTL ships had a 7.5m freeboard, and carried troops, which can't work in SS3.

The protected deck is designed as 2 layers, with a "cellular raft" with dozens of compartments between. OTL citadel armor could not be fitted, 210belt is "best"

A variant on the historical Italia class.
These vessels have the same freeboard and dimensions as the historic ships.
Additionally, they have the 2 x TB (or landing craft) compartment in rear.

Rearmed, rearmored, & reegined in 1895 (instead of Duillio)
Miscellaneous weight:
122: Torpedo nets
20 : 20 x Torpedos : 2 bow tubes, 2 each beam.
2500 : Troop compartments for 10,000 troops (actually historical) for 1 day,
or 1250 troops   for longer.
100 : torpedo boat docking aft, now converted to landing barges

300 tons : Unallocated misc weight.

BP cost : 14.725-0.3 (troop misc +unallocated) = 14.425

126 tons of Miscellaneous weight below hull represents torpedo nets.
40 tons represents torpedoes in 4 beam and 1 bow tube. (note that firing submerged tubes while going over 20knots is hard).
The 320 above WL and on deck is unallocated.

The Ruggiero di Lauria Class was rearmed in 1895 with newer guns.

It appears Re Umberto and Sicilia may have been Barbette ships, but pictures of Sardegna show turrets, and the data shows turret armor.

126 tons of Miscellaneous weight below hull represents torpedo nets.
40 tons represents torpedoes in 4 beam and 1 bow tube. (note that firing submerged tubes while going over 20knots is hard).

The on deck includes 50 tons for an admirals suite.
The remaining 300tons are a design reserve.

It appears Re Umberto and Sicilia may have been Barbette ships, but pictures of Sardegna show turrets, and the data shows turret armor.

I suspect that is what happened and it didn't get remedied pre-game.

Originally planned as the Navalism version of the Regina Elena, and a class of 4, to be paired with the Regina Margheritas to form a core of 6 first rate battleships. The visual appearance, including the interesting forecastle (about same % length), is that of the Regina Elena. Hull has been stretched and widened from historical to allow the 180mm "B" & "Y" superimposed turrets, and having twin 12".

Guns
As always, Turrets & Mounts are -4 to +30. The latter is high, but historic for the Italians.
Fore and aft, 180mm turrets superimpose over the 12" main battery turrets.
Amidship 180mm turrets are per the Regina Elena, with the center turret shooting over the adjacent two.
This gives 10x 180mm guns bearing in any direction.

The 120mm guns are mounted in casements, 22deg elev, 8 per side, with double casements forward in the raised forecastle housing 4 more mounts. This gives 12 guns forward and 10 on each beam.

The combination of 180mm and 120mm gives this vessel more anti torpedo craft firepower than any.

Armor :
Upper belt covers from 7.88 and 5.38 to the top of the main belt +0.89 (0.51 above the next deck), being 4.49m high forward of the break, and 1.99m high aft of the break, for a 2.86m average. There are two double casements on each side at the forward part of the citadel, taking advantage of this doubled belt. There is a 25mm armored roof to the upper belt.

The Upper belt not only protects the casements, but also covers the barbettes of the secondary turrets, given most of the barbettes 120+90/2 = 165 effective armor behind the upperbelt.

The main belt rises 0.51m above the protective deck, to stop plunging shells (<15deg) from diving over the top and striking the slope. The main deck descends to -2.12m below WL.
The main protective deck is 65mm over the citadel, and slopes behind the main belt to meet the edge at -2.12m below waterline.  This deck is 25mm over the ends of the vessel.

The 8mm of bulge armor represents a ductile armor steel used to construct the bulge,. The bulge comes to the bottom of the main belt, and connects to the double bottom. The bulge is extensively subdivided and equipped for counter flooding.

NOTE : The following is included in the ship PRIOR to finishing development of the appropriate technology (which is in progress), and so is designed not to be tough enough to be a true TDS.

The wing passage and 8mm Bulkhead represents the very first Italian effort at an armored torpedo defense system, in a reaction to the Royal Navy losses off Nova Scotia. Expecting the anti-mine bulge to detonate the torpedo 1m away from the hull, they expect most of the force to vent upwards to the surface, but the hull plating will be damaged. So a continuous bulkhead is placed 1.5m inside of the hull to allow both compartmentalization and damage control access. This serves to limit, rather than contain, the damage, and is not a true Torpedo Defense. However the additional expansion space, coupled with the small size of torpedo warheads, will probably help limit damage. Without this wing passage, the vessel is rated for 2.7 torpedoes, with it, 3.5 torpedoes. I expect the presence of this bulkhead means the ship can take 2.7...maybe 3... which is about the same and makes it properly less than effective:)

Did they beat the drum slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the death march, as they lowered you down,
Did the band play the last post and chorus,
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest
