R-1 Class River Gunboat

A generic river gunboat for service on the Danube/Sava, Euphrates/Tigris, and Nile river systems.  It's primarily intended to keep locals in line, so the armament is not super crazy.  The armor protection is basically intended to keep bullets out of the important bits.

Seakeeping is not great, but ought to be just fine for rivers.

The main gun is a howitzer, to facilitate shelling forts or elevated positions as might be found on river banks.

The miscellaneous weight was originally for deck cargo or a small detachment of troops.

R-23 Class River Monitor

Two river monitors were built to defend the Ottomans' Balkan river system from Austrian forces.  The second unit had scarcely been laid down when Austria-Hungary imploded and got gobbled up by Germany.  One can only hope this pattern repeats itself.

R-26 Class Gunboat

Also to be built for the Nile Expedition - a group of very small gunboats for forward scouting, river mapping, and such.

Given that the most likely "opposition" along the Upper Nile would be locals with rifles, four machine guns seemed likely a reasonably heavy armament for this purpose.  However, consultation with the Germans led to the conclusion that a single heavier gun might be useful for intimidation purposes.

The armor belt is basically a row of bullet-proof steel along enough of the hull to keep the boat from sinking.  Additional plates are added amidships to cover the vertical extent of the engine room.
