Overview

The Russian army numbers 900,000 active duty soldiers in 18 corps. A third of the army is in cavalry units, one of the highest ratios in the world and vital for operations on the vast steppes of Central Asia and Siberia. The army has seen significant investment over the past decade and adopted the latest in technology. The new magazine fed bolt action M1891 Mosin-Nagant has been adopted as the service rifle of the army, with the M1895 Nagant revolver having recently been adopted for the officer corps. Experiments have also been conducted with the American Colt-Browning M1895 machine gun, and Russian designers are at work developing artillery with modern recoil control systems.

The reach of the Russian army is also being improved by the construction of vast railways across the steppes. The Trans-Siberian Railway inches every closer to Vladivostok and will soon make it possible to journey across the empire in days instead of months. New railways are being built in Central Asia and the Caucasus to further Russia's interests in the region.
