Larnaca, Cyprus
June 3, 1904

The locals were eyeing which were two dilapidated warehouses in the harbor district two months ago, next to each other. Since then both had been rebuilt, white lime shone on the fresh plaster.

Over the gate of the first was a sign, on a black background stood in large white letters, and and five-pointed orange star with white outlines:

"ORANGE STAR LINES"

Which was repeated both in Greek and in the flowing script of the Otttomans below. The sign of the neighboring house was similar but it said

"SOUTH AFRICA LINES"

People were also working wooden long pier along the waterside. The workers confirmed that the work was ordered by the same men as the two houses, but but shrugged when asked why these foreigners wanted to build such a long a pier that four smaller ships could be tied on it. Some captain mentioned that it was just as long as an ocean liner, but it only confused the matter. With the two dozen different taxes that the locals had to pay the Pasha no one had the money to pay for a transoceanic journey. And the announced baval expansion program only meant more of the same.

17 May

The Imperial Government has announced a new program to restore the toms of the legendary first two sultans of the House of Osman, Osman and his son Orhan, who were buried in Bursa.

25 May

According to information recently released, the Porte is in extended negotiations with the Baltic League involving the island of Svalbard.. no word on whether said negotiations are territorial, economic, or military in nature.

7 June

The Imperial Navy expansion program is slowly churning into gear, beginning with a series of tugs and water transports. Civilian yards are being contracted to build large troop ships, specifically designed to carry Imperial Janissaries and their kit.

20 June

Apparently the next stage in Imperial Navy expansion involves a new class of long-range protected cruisers..

In related news, the recent advances in warship technology - Dreadnaught, and the Russian and DKB battleships - have rendered Turgut Reis and her sister essentially obsolescent. The Imperial Navy is reportedly in deep negotiations for foreign aid in constructing a modern capital ship...

Don't worry, what I have in mind actually makes sense.

Well.. it is riding the edge of plausibility - but I think it could happen!

Ballplatz, Wien, sometime afterwards, but still in 1904

"Svalbard, Svalbard .... ahhh, SPITZBERGEN! That's the Scandinavian name for those islands. So the Porte are negotiating with the League about them? Cunning fellows, those Baltic fellows, pretending to own those islands.
