Is there a canal between the Atlantic and Pacific?
Yes, 3 of them in fact. CSA is part owner of 1.

Does the CSA have good relations with Gran Colombia? If not, what was the previous player's response to this?
No. They are each other's number 1 rival. Theirs is more of a cold war though.

Did he make ships with very long range in order to allow them to sail between the East and West coasts, or was it such that a ship was intended to spend its entire service life on whatever coast it was constructed on?
Originally (1st Carthaginian) The CSN was more a coastal force similar to the OTL USN. Then there was a paradigm shift (Guinness) that lead to some longer legged and larger ships for power projection as the CSA strove to become more of a world player. Then Woodrow Wilson died (assassination, unproven/ 2nd Carthaginian) and the CSA became more isolationistic and began to slowly pull away from the Nassau Treaty Pact. There are still allied to France/UNK/Italy, but they've been less and less involved as time goes by.

Sounds good. What do have to do to get the CSA?

Welcome. Speaking of the CSA, New Switzerland does not like them very much...

Fox, I'm sure the feeling is mutual.

Once again in my non-mod, peon voice I'd recommend posting some more SpringSharp designs, offer incite into other designs, probably some kind of general "Hi, this is me" thread for background purposes. Usually new people lurk for a while before taking a nation, and CSA, while not huge, isn't a slouch either. Just let us get to know you a little.

I can't find a list of the CSA naval gun mountings, but I have been able to find one for the naval guns themselves. I'd like to have some of my designs be applicable to the CSA.

CSA practice usually meant twins for the main battery. Their intermediate was the 9.2" in a twin and a 7.5" single. Their CL main/BB secondaries were 5.5" and 4.75" in twin and singles. The small stuff is usually singles like the 4", 3.5", 2.25", 1.575", and 1.5". They have a 1" and I think there was a 0.5" single and I seem to remember some talk of a 0.5" twin. Both the last 2 are machine guns. I think the 2.25, 1.575, and 1.5 were meant to be AA eventually. Carthaginian had this think for even number shell weights, hence the 1.575"(2lbs) and the 1.5" (1lbs). Per rules any thing in a single can be a deck mount or a deck mount & hoist set up. I think most of the CSA singles, except the 9.2" and 7.5" were mount only. Twins require Mount & Hoist except machine guns (afaik) and guns over a certain size, I think over 6.1"(155mm) require turret & barbette. Guns over 7" require turret & barbette no matter what. For fire control you set aside misc weight, BB FC (guns over 7" require 250t per ship), CA/CL (7" and smaller guns, ships over max DD tonnage (CSA has 1,500t DD tech, I think, so a 1,501t ship requires 100t CL FC), anythings smaller than a CL uses 25t DD FC. Monitors can use the next lower level, but there is problems if they engage moving targets.

Any casemate mounts for the 9.2 inch guns, or are those turreted only?

It would probably be bad having a heavy secondary battery anyways, but just wondering.

I'm not sure if there WAS a casemate mount for the 9.2, but I wouldn't want one now.

I can sorta answer to this, as I run Gran Columbia now and used to run the CSA. I was the in between gen for Guiness and Carth, and Gran Columbia and the CSA are each others #1 rivals....although more in a friendly competition sort of way, as they both know any conflict with each other would be fatal to their status as a world power. Gran Columbia is slightly more powerful then the CSA, and has full control of a canal, but the CSA and GC are almost equal.

Guinness

The CSA - GC relationship could go anywhere now that the primary architects of their rapprochement, both in-character and out, are out of the picture.

One reason the CSA while I was running it began to develop a more outward view is that as things stood, they didn't have much to do except glower at the Colombians. Relations with two of their three direct neighbors, the UNK and Rohan had gotten so good that there wasn't much drama to be had there, though I considered creating some. Mesoamerica/Mexico was another story, but opportunity for role play there was limited by lack of a constant player.

The CSA has the capability to build more than the Italians, but the Italians have far more fingers in far more pies, so I believe they provide more opportunities for role-play today. So I suppose it depends on what you are looking for. Generally the mods like to present new players with a choice or three when we have them to give, so I think I can officially say that the CSA or Italy are likely your two best choices.

ctwaterman

Oh Yes...

The CSA is the bigger nation but the Empire of Italia has it fingers into as Guinness put it far far more Pies.

Jefgte

Yes , CSA is a quiet country with, for the moment, quiet neighbours.

Italy is in a more "spicy" environement.
