Is the CSA our historical CSA, or larger? I don't recall seeing a United States.

Also, I notice that Italy has a lot of the Austro-Hungarian coastline as part of its empire. Any other changes for Italy?

CSA also contains some of OTL Mexico.

Italy has so far been a "Romanesque" Empire.

Romania - If Tex doesn't want double duty.
Ukraine - Marek is AWOL since August, but it is currently involved in a scripted war w/ Bavaria. This would have to finish first probably.

The script involves a larger Romania, and the (hmm how much forshadowing)...the Ukraine may not be desirable place to start.

Did the band play the last post and chorus,
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

Fair enough. I wasn't quite sure how far you were going. I hope it goes for a nice while, I enjoy the show.

Won't the countries that have been inactive since last year be far behind in technologies and ships?

If you end up playing one of those, you'd have to do catch up reports, which would include ships built in that time and tech developed, etc. This isn't actually a terrible thing, as it gives you a chance to tailor some things to you liking, and lots of chances to figure out our rules while doing the reports.

Well sorry :D With two lengthy projects on my hands, I have time to chat but no time to sim. :-X

Would something with unusual turret configurations like HMS Agincourt or with wing turrets be a valid design, or should they all be centerline and not in between the towers?

Guinness

oh, we've got our own version of Agincourt: http://www.navalism.org/index.php?topic=107.msg18980#msg18980

There have been plenty of ships with wing turrets too, and lately the Colombians in particular have been messing with all-forward arrangements.

"Validity" is mostly driven by the rules, specifically including techs a country has and the ship design guidelines. You may also find that many of us have developed a number of sniff-tests. For instance, the often heard "NEDS", which stands for "Not Enough Deck Space" for all those guns and torpedoes. Interestingly, that acronym comes from the same player that designed the ship linked above. :)

Some of us like to try to illustrate ships to make sure we have enough room for everything to fit, since SS works mostly based on weight, not area or volume. Such an effort is optional, but I personally enjoy producing plan and elevation illustrations for most of the warships I design. You can find almost all of those in my old digs in the CSA's encyclopedia area.

You guys have an IRC? I'm thinking of taking the CSA, but I will probably have a lot of questions.

Not that I'm aware of. Some of us do MSN messenger though.

Ok.. Italy was a Political Animal  The Roman names and Titles were adopted in the Middle 1800 to try and give a national Identity to what was litterally a nation created out of a half dozen city states and the Papal States.

Italy does not Control Trieste that belongs to Bavaria so Mainland Italy is actually smaller then our modern Italy.   The "Empire" is a strongly Roman Catholic Monarchy with control of large sections of North and East Africa, it also control Uraguay in South America.  Uraguay is less then 2 million people and about 10 million sheep and a few million cattle.   Its exports are basically Wool, Mutton, and Beef.  The Colony was formed by Italian and Spanish colonists and has little or no native population.

Italia has formed a Curia of Nations a forum style organization of the largely Catholic Monarchys of Europe its group of Special Envoys getting to together a couple times per month for wine, cigars, and discussions aimed at preserving the institution of Monarchy and Catholism vs the encroachment of evil Republicanism and Anarchy not to mention Communists.

For Enemies the "Empire"  Had New Zion and their New Swiss masters.  Now effectively only the New Swiss Masters remain.  The Orange Republic and the Empire are slowly working towards normalizing relations but still are slightly cool towards each other.

For Allies the "Empire of Italia" has strong Alliances with France, CSA, and the UNK even if the Nassau Treaty Alliance is starting to fray around the edges.   Italy has strong ties additionaly to Bavaria  [Recent Royal Wedding] and at least good relations with Kaiserreich Brandenburg

Is there a canal between the Atlantic and Pacific, and does the CSA have good relations with Gran Colombia? If not, what was the previous player's response to this? Did he make ships with very long range in order to allow them to sail between the East and West coasts, or was it such that a ship was intended to spend its entire service life on whatever coast it was constructed on?

miketr

There are no less than 3 canals in Central America.  One is controlled by Gran Columbia.  Relations between Gran Columbia and CSA are...  cool and my impression is they viewed one another as rivals.  If nothing else GC and CSA viewed one another as their most likely enemies in war time.  Both are part of, if not enemy alliances, somewhat adversarial ones.

Both CSA and GC want to one extent or another control the Caribbean and Central America.
