We have to remember we are in a pre-Radar and Pre-Radio era where a flight of bombers depending on weather and when it passes over the lines or even if it passes over the lines has a fair chance of reaching its target without being intercepted by enemy fighters.  Thats of course if they can successfuly demonstrate their competence in overland navigation using a simple compas and a map.

Most of the fights we have had Im not sure if Rocky did this but the Ground attack craft are really only getting intercepted a small percentage of the time prior to getting to their attack runs.  There over the enemy lines the Enemy may have stationed his fighters to intercept enemy reconnissance and enemy ground attack fighters.

As for disengaging from the Fighters that depends alot on the bomber.  A Mosquito is a very hard target for a Me-109G to Intercept.   When the German HE-111 I believe it were first appeared over spain they were faster then any of the Spanish fighters.  So its theoretically possible to build the bomber faster then a fighter.

Plus if the Bomber has a tail gun and its speed is as fast as the fighters or nearly so... well that makes the tail gunner real dangerous and chasing the bomber from behind isnt such a good Idea... best to let it get away and jump it from above and infront some other day.... ;D
