Snow how bad was it?

3ish years ago, we had an ice storm that knocked out power for 18 hours. I looked at automatic cut/in generators, but decided that it wasn't worth the cost.

My father in-law is apparently using this storm as an excuse to upgrade his generator (up on top of Deliverance Mountain they lose power a a lot), so I may be getting one soon. I think that's a 5 KW, so it would be enough to power the heat, fridge, a TV, and my cable modem, which is good enough. :) Now if only I had a good place to store it, and more importantly, a good place to store the fuel.

As it is, I went out Saturday morning and spent $70 on flashlights, batteries, duct tape, and 4 mil poly, just in case, almost guaranteeing the power would stay on.

The advantage of NG is no need for fuel (if it runs for any length watch your gas bill shot up though).  Ours is a 7.5 Kw unit and its in its own metal housing next to the house.  So space isn't an issue and no need to worry about fumes since its outside of the house.

Only problem was it took some effort to find someone that knew how to maintain the stupid thing, finding an installer was no problem but most people sorta scratched their heads when asked to change the oil, etc.  For example it has a car type battery in side so after 4 years, it went dead and it took 2 repair guys to figure out that fact.

If you don't hear from me for a few days, it's because the power went out. That's my main worry at the moment...

It's (thankfully) been some years since prolonged power outages here. Last year like 1 day.  Drastic contrast to the past.  Used to be you could listen to the radio as the roads out of town closed one by one...then the power would go out. Welcome to winter.
Did they beat the drum slowly,
Did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the death march, as they lowered you down,
Did the band play the last post and chorus,
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

The Sierras had caught all the snows around here, there were only like three days when the snow caused problems. Few inches, then it melts/evaporates before the next winter storm.
