Not intended as a criticism, but curious - what's the 3" armour intended to stop? Extreme-range heavy shells or close-range light shells?

(Is wondering if escorts need armour at all nowadays)

Destroyer gun fire from outside torpedo range.  Ships like this are designed to kill destroyers before they can launch torpedoes, so they need to be protected from destroyer gunfire to do their job.
