Monsieur Palpaté, Monsieur Palpaté.

Yes Philipe?

We got a message from our temporary observation post on the Spratlys.

Yes, and ?

A cloud of smoke is seen in the direction of the Philipines. And the geologist has messured tremors with the seismograph.

Yes and?

Ing Deperdan does believe there is a volcano erupting at the Philipines.

Yes, and?

I tought this was useable information Monsieur Palpaté.

I don't believe so Philipe. If it's a volcano, it's to far away to have any influence on the Spratly's or our other posessions in the Pacific. If Krakatau didn't do that, nothing on the Philipines won't either. If it is a brushfire and an earthquake, it doesn't matter either. If it's New Swiss trowing VERY big bombs, that would be interesting. Or Spain having fun blowing up mountains, that would be cause for a better look. But nature isn't my concern.

Since their isn't much in the Spratly's I'd say a tent or shack is about the best they will get....plus if their is a typhoon or if an earthquake causes a tidal wave, that post is under water. Considering how many islands the Swiss have, I doubt you have enough ships to patrol them all.

OOC

With New Swiss at war with about anybody, the French naval headquarters found it an acceptable risk to put observation posts on the islands just big enough to hide a small sailing ship(with auxilary engine) and a small group of observators. Including geologist and mineralogists to seek hidden treasures.

Why did I post this. 2 reasons. With Pinatubo getting active and New Swiss diverting warships toward another battlefield, they are bound to be discovered.

Spain agree for the sience delegation visit.
The still largly un knowend to the sienctist event of Volcano reuption is worth sudying, however Philipines are in a warzone and we cannot guaranty safty of the sientists. But If the men of knolege decide to come too the philipines they will work with a army escort.
But we still countion that we cannot guaranty there safty.

October 4th
Bridge, Battleship HAMS Ocean, World tour Fleet, Western Pacific 300 miles south west of the phillipines

Port Lookout:"Smoke on the Horizon sir!!"
Captain Beatty: "What the!! Hand me you glasses Number 1!!"
1st Officer, Luitenant Green: " Here you go sir, looks like it's coming from the Phillipines to me."
Captain Beatty: "Your right it's the Phillipines Number 1, looks like a bloody Volcano is about to blow!! Signal the rest of the fleet, "Smoke on port Bow is Volcano!! Follow my lead!""
Signal officer:"Aye sir!"
Luitenant Green: "Shall we notify New York, and request orders?"
Admiral Hayden:"Most certainly. We have resources aboard that may be of some help to the Spanish."
Captain Beatty: "But Spain is at war with New Switzerland, it would be unwise to part our fleet in the middle of a battlefield!!"
Admiral Hayden:"That is for the King to decide, we are a neutral party this time, and thus must act as one. But If the people of the Phillipines are threatend by nature, we should do all we can to help them!!!"
Captain Beatty: "Yes Sir! Signal officer get Cruiser John I to Send a coded message to New York, requesting orders as to what action to take."
Coxswain, Cheif Petty Officer Busser: "What course should we take sir?"
Admiral Hayden: "Take us to the South of the Islands, Maintain 5knots."
CPO Busser: "Aye Sir!"

October 5th
Bridge, Battleship HAMS Ocean, World tour Fleet, Western Pacific 250miles south east of the Phillipines

Signal officer:"Sir, we have recieved orders from the king."
Admiral Hayden:"Very well then, what are our orders?"
Signal officer:"Message reads "Spanish have declined offers of assistance from your fleet. Proceed with course, keeping well away from Spanish or NS waters. Raise Main UKA ensigns to make sure you aren't mistaken for a beligerant.""
Captain Beatty:"Right! Cheif, stay on course, keep this distance from Islands. Signal officer, order fleet to raise their Largest Ensigns, and follow our lead in ."
Admiral Hayden: "Signal officer; Cheif, belay those orders!!!!"
Captain Beatty:"Why sir?"
Admiral Hayden:"There are civilians in danger over there Captain. We are able to help them, and we shall!"
Luitenant Green"But sir, the King's orders clearly state "
Admiral Hayden:"I know what the King has said, but this is my fleet, and it will do what I say!"
Captain Beatty:"Your orders then sir?"
Admiral Hayden:"Take us towards the Islands Chief, Signal officer order the fleet to raise their Largest ensigns, and to follow our lead."
CPO Busser: "Aye Sir. What speed would you like?"
Admiral Hayden:" Maintain 5 knots, and order action stations, these waters could be mined!!!"
CPO Busser: "Aye Sir"

At that Beatty left the Bridge and headed for his cabin.

7 to 11 october, the rumbling doesn't increase, the ashcloud is diminishing in size.
The smell of brimstone is pentrant downwind of Pinatubo.

12 october, the brimstone smell just vanished over a few hours.

13 october Paris
École polytechnique ,classroom Desaguliers

Professor, what about the volcanic activity in the Philipines. Latest news was that the activity is declining. How does that relate to the lessons that state that volcano's always stop after an major eruption. This wasn't mayor. According to the newspapers no civilians were killed, nor any property damaged.

A good point, and if we follow the history, we could say this was a minor incident on the field of geologics.

"Still no explosion from Pinitubo", Dr. Manuel Ortiz noted at the dining lounge of the Gran Colombian Geology Centre in Medellin. His cousin, Dr. Tito Ortiz, grunted, as he was in the process of finishing off a beer. "I guess the Spanish are safe", Manuel added.

"Best stick to the coal petrology, cousin", Tito replied. "There were quakes earlier, and they grew in intensity and quantity, implying the ascent of magma up the throat of the volcano. There was a significant ash plume as a result of gas seperating from the magma on the way up. But now the plume's gone and it's quieter. It's possible that the magma cooled and those ignorant idiots living on its slopes can go back to life as normal."

"Like I said", Manuel interjected.

"Like I said", Tito replied. 'It's also possible that the quakes have caused a rock fall within the throat of the volcano, plugging it up. That would stop the out-gassing, right? Right - until the pressure gets too high and the top of the mountain disappears in what my five year-old would term, 'a horrendous kablooie.'"

"Tito Junior can say 'horrendous'?", Manuel asked.

"As well as any five year-old can, anyway", Tito replied. "Didn't we order more beer?'

Philipines Manilla 8 october, offloaded troops from the liner Normandy

QUOTE
Parbleu, sergant Grape cursed.  Do those American royalists know what they want. Or does our governement knows what they want.  We are transported like so much cattle.

First the rumors that we're going to invade Hawaiï. When we arrive we get all the
welcomes that any ordinary sailor would get, including the cheap tartes and even worse booze in cockroach infested "hotels". our officers had a load of fun in the better houses, as far as we know.
But that mixed populace of mainly Portugese decendants, local fauna and a sprinkling of arrogant New Swiss was just asking for a real pasting and a surefire cure for boredom. After a time of idleness on that island, under watching eyes of the local military. What a laugh, I won more Swiss francs with their equaly bored troops than in their casino's run by those ex ACM cheaters.
When I at last gathered enough money to buy something very nice for my fiance, we get driven back to that UKA excuse for a troop carrier and again, weeks of boredom in the Pacific. Not even a good storm to spice up things.

Now this, under the treat of a volcanic eruption we get offloaded ,trough minefields and with a lot of Spanish gunboats swarming us, once we are disembarked, we get orders to get back onto the ship.

I'm dead tired of this. I'm a legionair, I'm a professional soldier, one of the best in the world. our machine guns and our artilery has no equal in this world, and each of us is capable to kill with a stare and a snarl. Or even without. We belong on the battlefield, not in the soft bunks on a troopship.

Mount pinatubo is silent. Only people actively spending time can feel faint quakes.
Only a few fumaroles are seen, and not in the previously smoking crater, but on the flank facing away from civilisation.
Also, people who know the mountain but didn't see it for a while would notice a difference in shape in the neighborhood of the fumaroles.

A heavy but normal storm is approaching the islands.

Philipines, the New Swiss invasion in full swing.

10 december. Mount Pinatubo still belching forth ashes and sulfur, earthquakes subsiding, only light tremors felt. At night the eary red glow on the summit gives the mountain a diabolical look.

14 december the ashcloud subsides.

14 December, South of Manila.
Fishermen around the Taal Lake report a lot of dead fish. The water is unnaturaly warm like a hot shower, wooden boats are blackening.

Christmas eve, the guns are silent, New Swiss troops, Philipino guerrilla's, Spanish soldiers ,civilians all adhere to the christian wish for peace for all.
At least for this night.

Mount Pinatubo scraping its throats.
All people feel something terrible is coming, the congregations go to church early.

19 December 1901

Ernesto Goma wasn't the type to get nervous on a job very often, but he was nervous this time. His nominal cover story - that he was a Spanish rancher, looking to import Filipino cattle back to his home - would have been adequate in normal circumstances, but the Spanish empire was sliding headlong towards civil war. Plus there was the presence of the New Swiss on the island, doing their best to destroy Manila and the other major cities in the Central Luzon Valley. Not to mention the volcanic activity.

It wasn't just him that was nervous; the cattle here were nervous, too. More wary of strangers, and even of their owner, who was now out in the pasture with a dog, trying to push the cattle a little closer so he could inspect them. As the Filipino yelled at them, the cattle suddenly broke and stampeded away to the west.

Moments later, ripples appeared on the surface of the small pond in the pasture. The ground seemed to vibrate, and a deep rumble resounded all around him. He froze in place, swaying slightly, and counted to fourteen before it stopped.

With the cattle now quite a distance away, the Filipino threw his arms in the air and stalked back to Goma, slinking dog in tow. "I am sorry, Senor, the land moves too much these past days. It frightens the livestock and they do not respond to me as they should. We will have to walk over to them, quietly."

"That's fine", Goma replied. "Are there always so many earthquakes?"

"No", the local answered. "God is unhappy with all of the killing, and grows angrier as we come closer to the Navidad. He is warning the Swiss, and the factions, that they must stop hurting each other."

Goma nodded, though he inwardly thought the notion to be nonsense. The two men and the dog trudged up a gentle slope towards the distant cattle. They skirted around a small, muddy depression that the local eyed warily, and then a second in which a few bubbles blooped up to the air/mud interface.

"Don't want to get our feet wet?" Goma joked?

"It is not the wetness that concerns me, it is the heat", the Filipino corrected him.

"Ah", Goma murmured.

The hike brought them up to a view of Taal Bay, a few kilometres away. The serene azure water was punctuated by a few fishing vessels and a medium-sized warship steaming into the bay. Goma studied the vessel for a few seconds. "Is that one of our ships?", he asked. He knew it was not; the Spanish did not own Cod-class cruisers.

The local's response was to cross himself. "It is the devils", he spat. "They lurk in a lair above the bay, and their ships come and go as they please. They have corrupted the authorities and terrified the people. Further cause for God's displeasure."

Goma continued to observe the cruiser and his heart lurched as he spotted the black ensign fluttered from the ship's mast. "Who are 'they'?", he inquired.

"Minions of the demon Agrival", the local snarled.

Madre de Dios!, Goma thought. He is based just a few dozen miles from the greatest city in the Phillipines?

The sound of a child's voice, alternately calling out and crying, caught Marco's attention just as it caught that of the wild pig he'd been aiming at. The pig whirled about and Marco fired a desperate shot at it, the bullet slapping into a tree trunk above and behind the animal as it crashed into the underbrush and vanished.

Marco cursed. "Come over here, child, and stop your wailing before you scare away everything in the forest!"

"Where are you?", the child, a young boy, asked.

"Over here. Follow my voice." The old hunter listened to the boy blunder through the plants and added, "Come to your left a bit. That's right."

When the youngster spied Marco, he dashed over to him and clung tightly to him. "What are you doing out here? You should be back in the village helping your mother", Marco scolded.

The boy - his nephew - looked up at him. His eyes were wet and his face streaky, where tears had cleaned grime away. "Mama won't wake up", the boy explained. "Nobody will wake up."

"You're awake", Marco noted.

"I came down from the hill for the siesta, but everybody was already sleeping. They won't wake up!", the boy protested.

"How would you know that? They may simply be inside or somewhere else", Marco said.

"But they're not! They're sleeping on the ground! The chickens and dogs are sleeping too!", the boy protested.

Marco did not like the sound of that. "Very well", he said, with feigned optimism. "Let's go back down and wake them all up."

They trudged down the pathway towards the village, thoughts of returning empty-handed after a full morning and afternoon of hunting pushed to the back of Marco's mind. After thirty minutes or so, they arrived at the village, nestled in a small, steep-sided valley between Taal Lake and the coast.

It was quiet; no laughing children, no yipping dogs, no crowing of roosters. No smoke rose from the cooking fires that were usually lit. Marco frowned but said nothing.

Within the village, it was, at a glance, very peaceful, but people and animals alike were scattered about on the ground, motionless, and that did not look right at all. Most looked peaceful, a few did not, but all were rigid with death.

Marco chose not to seek out his own family, but was compelled to investigate the sight of his friend Pablo, lying face down across a cooking fire. Reluctantly, he rolled the body over and jerked back; Pablo, as brave a man as he had ever met, had died terrorized. His mouth and eyes were wide open, and his left hand was clenched upon his throat.

"There is only one explanation", Marco muttered with eerie calm. "Pablo was afraid of no man but one, the pirate king on the island. To have died like this was surely at the hands of that foul creature."

"The pirates?", the boy whimpered.

"You remember when they visited us. They told the village elders that we would be fine so long as we did what their leader Agrival told us. The elders obeyed, and look what it has led to: betrayal and mass death", Marco growled. "I would gladly kill him, but there are too many of his men, boy; I would never get close enough..."

The boy stared at his uncle.

"Come. We go to Manila to find the Swiss. If our own government will not protect us, perhaps the invaders will."

OOC, I asked Rocky to write this part of the Disaster, as it is a part of his "real life". And he's doing a very well job.
IC

The French scientific group at Mount Pinatubo- alas, a few dozen miles away- Was having a bad time. Bad weather, mosquitos as large as a kite, rebels, even a New Swiss recon unit, all adding their own unpleasantness to the continious ashcloud.

The seimographs still showing different patterns, but very anomalous. No theory came forth, no evidence for older theories. Only small quakes and loads of ashes.

The Spanish officials who allowed the group to get to a "safe spot" above the mudstreams rushing forth from the Volcano, the irregular communications, no telegraph wire can stand an enviroment like the Philipines in a civil/foreign war under the continous assault of volcanic ashes and fumes.

Professor Dupré was cursing his bad luck to volunteer for this mission.

They were traring down a former post office the building was a hazard as it treaten to fall down any minut.
"This is redundant. Why are we doing this if the whole thing may fall apart by it self?"
"Becose so kids or something may be inside when it goes down thats why"
"We can put sing saying stay out"
The large tractor moved foward taking the large pillar down like it was made out of tootpicks. The building was stil standing.
"That was fun"

Mithril Child, Ship of the Westron
20 miles southwest of Taal, Philippines

"This war is making business tough all around the Pacific," claimed load master Nethim. "With the Swiss at war or nearly at war with everyone around this side of the world their is so few places we can actually pickup or deliver goods."

"Well then its good that Theocro King needs news as much as the Kingdom needs silk and spices," replied the ship's captain, "so stop complaining."

"We won't even be near home on Fellowship Day."

"Not like we expected to be home until February at the earliest."

"Still, moving freight is much safer than snooping."

Sighing the captain looked out towards the glowing smoke and flashes on the horizon. The plum that marked the one of the many conflicts on this group of islands, "We aren't snoops, we are just observing as we go from port to port, nothing illegal there. If we can get a cargo to move, so much the better."

"Well the Spaniards seem to be rather unwelcoming these days."

"When were the Spaniards ever welcoming?" asked the helmsman.

"You just mind your course, Kick's Back."

"Oh certainly."

The Mithril Child kept between the two large islands as they headed south east on their way to Brandenburg, Australia, and then Maoria before heading across the Pacific once more. Aside from the complaints from load master Nethim the day was quiet.

A rumbling could be heard as the waters shifted, "Captain the way is getting choppy."

"Hold course."

"Smoke to the Northeast." shouted down the lookout.

The Captain looked out at a giant glowing plume of black and ash colored smoke rising high into the atmosphere.

"By Gandolf's Beard!"

"Wave coming!"

"Helm, turn us into the wave!"

Over the speaker tube. "Sound for collision, Engineering give us full speed."

"Not that twelve knots is going to do much." said Nethim.

"Go secure the men and load, not make light at doom."

"Even doom can be brought down by the light," remarked Nethim as he ran from the bridge.

"This is not going to be fun."

The freighter managed to just turn into the wave as it hit the bow with several tons of force. Much of the on deck structures and anything no tied down was ripped from the ship. The bow wasn't much better, but she was still intact. The engine however was overworked and jarred.

"That was not what I signed on for," remarked the helmsman.

"Can we make it to Brandenburg?"

"I think so, the hull wasn't compromised. But we'll only make six knots."

"Should we go in to help?"

"Help with what? A few men and only a few supplies? Besides, look at it."

A glowing black ashen plume rose higher and higher in the night sky.

"If we find anyone adrift at sea we'll pick them up, but aside from that we'll limp to Brandenburg for repair and then continue on our mission."

Mithril Child, Ship of the Westron turned Southeastward again.

French scientific camp, observation post Mount Pinatubo. Christmas Eve 1901 9 58 pm .

Mount Pinatubo is spewing forth ashes, but seismographs give confusing images from what is happening below the earth.

Suddenly the instruments go berserk. But mount Pinatubo stays itself, without error, spewing forth ashes.

30 minutes later the world explodes in noise, everbodies ears pop and wistles. A windgust of hot air passes by.

Time to get out.

Ernesto Goma was more than ready. The fighting was getting worse by the hour, with a savagery he'd never expected or encountered before. Gangs of criminals were roving the countryside, taking advantage of the lapse into lawlessness. He was as likely to be shot for being a loyalist or a rebel as for being the Gran Colombian spy that he truly was, and he really had no interest in being dumped in an unmarked grave somewhere.

The ongoing natural disturbances weren't encouraging him either. The quakes had stopped yesterday afternoon, but it just felt wrong. He was tense. The locals were tense. Hell, the wildlife was tense.

So here he was, waiting in a small village on Taal Bay for his ride. The tramp freighter was perhaps ten minutes out, steaming straight for the pier. A large fishing trawler was just casting off, and he watched one of the deck hands waving to his wife or girlfriend, standing about twenty metres away from Goma.

The deck hand's arm stopped abruptly and his mouth dropped. Goma frowned and turned to look behind him, fearing he would see a gang of armed men...

...and wished that a gang of armed men was the problem, for reality was far, far, worse. Up beyond the ridgeline, the sky was being blotted out by a titanic, roiling, black cloud that just kept getting bigger and bigger and bigger

Had he been able to speak, he probably would have said, "Mierda!", but the sight paralyzed him. Specks climbed into the sky, by the hundreds or thousands. Deathly silence descended, broken only by a long gasp from the young woman down the pier.

Time seemed to slow down, just enough that he watched birds erupt from the foliage, starting at the top of the ridge and concluding in the village itself a few seconds later, and then the sound/concussion/shockwave slammed into him like a sledgehammer to a beetle. The noise was indescribable - a roar that permitted no other sound to exist, growing ever more painful until he was jolted by sharp shocks in his ears as his eardrums ruptured.

Suddenly lying on his side on the pier, it seemed like he was being kicked in the chest by a whole football team. A shack on the shore exploded, and he watched a smoking rock clatter off the pier and ricochet into the water with a hiss. That would explain the specks, he thought, and then he took in the sight of a tumbling brown cloud rush down the ridge towards the village.

It enveloped him, knocking him flat on his back, filling his eyes, nostrils, ears, and mouth with grit. He hardly had time to recognize that he couldn't breath before the arrival of an airborne tree trunk rendered the point moot.

Captain Chavo Peron, master of the Senora Isabella, had a better view of the eruption than the man he was coming to fetch. Had he been a geologist, he might have recognized that he was seeing explosion after explosion as the water of Lake Taal came into contact with underlying magma, exploded into steam, and was replaced by more lake water to continue the process. Geologists would have called it a phreatic eruption. Peron wasn't a geologist, but he wasn't far off in thinking that the entire island of Luzon was exploding; a good chunk of it was doing just that.

Perhaps ten seconds after it started, while that awful cloud blossomed like an enormous demonic flower across half of the sky, Peron was shouting, "RUDDER TO PORT! RUDDER TO PORT!", but the young man at the wheel was too transfixed to obey.

An underwater white swath raced out from the shore, prompting Peron to stop part way through his third repitition of the order. The concussion and the roar, oddly, reminded Peron of the beatings he'd received as a child from his drunken father: overwhelming, relentless, and unstoppable. He couldn't hear the portholes shatter, couldn't hear the screams of his crew, could only hear his father venting his wrath at the child cowering beneath him.

Already, the sun was reduced to a dull red disk behind the blackness swirling out from the island, the noise a devastating, continuing BOOOOOOOOOOOM punctuated by sharper blasts that hit him like his father's jabbing fists once had. Peron struggled not to give in to the madness; he thought, I survived that bastard... and pulled himself back to his knees. I will survive this, he added.

Scores of splashes, large and small, erupted out of the sea; puzzled, he only recognized that they were rocks when one - large enough that he could see it coming down - punched right through the fishing trawler starting out of that doomed village in front of him and the Senora Isabella. The boat slewed to starboard, its bow digging into the turbulent water, and began to sink rapidly.

He saw a structure of some kind explode in the village beyond the stricken trawler, and then a brown cloud roiled up over the ridge and descended upon the hapless community. Lightly built shacks burst before it; boats overturned; trees, bodies, and other light-weight objects were blown before it, and it rolled out across the bay towards him at a speed he could not comprehend.

His instincts saved him, flattening him against the deck of the freighter as the leading edge of the cloud roared past. Grit flayed his flesh, the hull rattled and banged with the impacts of uncounted objects. He gasped for breath, choking; the air was bad, unbreathable. Something smashed into his left leg and he screamed. The resulting intake of breath brought no oxygen, only warm dust.

He fought to hold his breath, and the howling winds began to subside, and after a half a minute he could not control himself. The gasp brought something with it, and he sucked at the air and choked on the dust at the same time.

Some time later - he had no idea how much later - he dragged himself up once again to take stock of the situation. First order of business: determine the state of his ship and his crew.

For perhaps twenty minutes, Captain Peron staggered around the Senora Isabella. His navigator was dead, a long stick driven through his left eye socket. The helmsman was groaning and clutching at his right hip. The boy who'd been at the wheel was nowhere to be seen.

His own leg wasn't working, but a plank of unknown origin had been laying nearby and he was now using it as a crutch of sorts. Hobbling to the cluster of voice pipes, he heard tinny shouting from a few of them. Popping open the lids to them all, he shouted, "QUIET!" over the thunder of the eruption that continued to landward.

The voices trailed off. "This is the Captain! Boiler Room, report!"

"Captain, what the f**k is going on?", the senior engineer yelled.

"It's a bloody volcano, now report!"

"Fires in the boilers are all out, and the air quality down here is terrible. We can hardly breath!"

"Get me a boiler lit, then come up for some air", Peron directed. "Who else is there?"

"Sir, it's Oscar down here in the forward hold - we've got water coming in from somewhere!"

"Find the source and report back - do not attempt to fix it before you report!", Peron snapped.

"Fire in the galley!", somebody screamed from aft.

Somewhat pre-occupied with the task of saving his ship, Captain Peron did not observe the sea pull away from the shore, leaving a large expanse of muddy flats behind it. He did, however, notice when it came back.

The Chinese Coast, near Chantou, Strait of Taiwan...
Ma Li looked up from his nets and was puzzled by what he saw... the sea was receding, leaving mud and surprised sea-creatures behind. A gaggle of children ran to the sudden bounty with delight and started scooping up stranded fish. But Ma Li frowned. This was not natural. Why would the sea suddenly go back like that ? Weren't there old stories that... His thoughts were interrupted by his venerable grandmother Ma Lizhen running exitedly towards him. She shouted:" Get the children away from the sea ! Get yourself away from the sea and run to the hills !!"
"But Nai-Nai (Paternal Grandmother) what happens ?"
"The sea will go away and then suddenly come back and destroy everything ! I remember the sea doing that, and many many were killed and much was smashed. Get everybody to the hills !!"
Ma Li got up and shouted towards the children to come back immediately. He followed his grandmother and knew -deep down inside with a sudden fear- that he was running for his life.
Minutes later the sea did come back. And with a vengeance.
But the Ma family was safe, while watching with horror how their village and ships -their livelihood- was destroyed in mere seconds. And how neighbours who weren't so fortunate as they were drowned.

South China Sea...
Captain Zhang stared dreamily out of his bridge's window. He was a reasonabely happy man: commanding a torpedo boat, staying alive during battles, and his wife had let him know through a telegraph in the most recent port they had visited that he was now the proud father of a healthy son ! His father must be proud, now that the line is preserved and another Zhang will be able to pray to his Ancestors and honour Them as it should be. He smiled as he thought of his soon home-coming, when his father would hail him at the door and show him his son and all relatives would gather and be happy together... life is good, he thought with a smile.
But the smile turned into a puzzled frown when he felt his boat move. There was hardly any wind, how could there be sudden waves ? And the boat was moving too. He looked around, checking the horizons and suddenly he saw a huge dark cloud billowing at the South-East. What is that ?! And the horizon was moving too as well now. He swallowed as he saw what must be gigantic waves coming towards his vessel and her 20 sisters. Immediately he shouted the alarm: "Hai xiao !!! Hai xiao !!! All hands get the boat secure for severe storm-waves. Signal all other ships, that is a hai xiao coming and it will crush us if we don't ride it out !!!"
An icy panic made his brains tick fast. As he heard a faint thundering sound coming from the South-East he thought: is the world coming to an end ?
A few minutes later it seemed that way.
Torpedo boats Dalian 01, Lianyujgang 21 to 30 and Hangzhou 31 to 40 were hardly a match for the murderous waves. When they recovered in the wake of the hai xiao, Captain Zhang noticed that only his ship Dalian 01, and the ships Lianyungang 21, 25 and 28 and Hangzhou 31, 32, 33, 34, 36, 37, 38 and 40 had survived. The 8 others haden't made it and were lost with all hands. But Captain Zhang thanked the Gods for their survival. And he vowed to name his son Hai-ci-bei (Mercy of the sea).

Port of Macau...
It was not a good day for Chen Yun. Although there has not been fighting in Macau for several months now it still was a real pain in the posterior to work in the docks. Difficult enough as it was to work with damaged machines and tools, but the ship they just finished doing maintenance on, the Coastal Battleship QH Wanglong, had been acting up with all kinds of mechanical glitches in the engine room. He hated it because it made his paperwork even more complicated, and it was difficult enough to find competent mechanics to do the job these days.
He cast a baleful glare through the window of his waterfront office at the obstructionist vessel which was sailing out of the harbour for new battles. Ah well, another job well done.
But a sudden movement caught his eye. For some strange reason the harbour was running empty !! Dragging the QH Wanglong along. He got out of his chair and leaned outside the windowsil, watching excited sailors and fishermen climbing down the kay and wading throught the filthy mud towards all kinds of objects that had sunk in the past and were now suddenly within easy reach. For a moment Chen felt a jab of jealousy but then he saw an elderly frantically running along the waterfront and heard him yelling something. When the elder reached Chen's office he heard: "Get away you fools !! Get out of there and run towards the hills because there is danger coming !!"
"Hey Grandfather," Chen shouted, "what is the problem ?"
"I tell you young man, the sea will come back, harder than it went away. Run for your life to the hills because the killing wave will come !"
Chen shrugged: "It is just a sudden tide Grandfather..."
"Heed the advice of the Ancestors young man ! There are many tales about the sea reclining and then thundering back in place." The old man continued running and yelling, but many people just looked at him with amused glances.
Chen wasn't so amused. Foolish as it may seem the disturbed elder may be right. He looked once more outside of his window and then noticed something at the horizon, far far away. He wasn't sure, but the hairs on his neck suddenly stood up and he felt a chill stabbing through his heart.
So he left his office and dashed towards the hills. Better safe than sorry he thought.
When he arrived on a hilltop, breathing heavily, he noticed that other people too had fled like him, flocking on several hilltops. They all watched the harbour and when he too looked over he saw something moving at the horizon. With awe he watched as the very horizon itself seemed to be moving towards Macau. Then he noticed that a huge wave was coming. "Hai xiao," someone whispered. Chen looked sideways and saw the old man who'd warned him, panting and wheezing. "Look," the elder said, pointing towards the harbour, "The fools are still trying to grab what's on the sea-bed. They will die."
The "fools" by now had noticed too that something was amiss. But they were too late. Even as they started scrambling up the quay and running towards the hills the thunderous waves crashed down upon them. Chen could only stare, mouth agape, how the Coastal Battleship QH Wanglong, like the regal dragon it was named after, rose majestically on top of the wave and came crashing down... on top of Chen's office. Then it was dragged further inland with the force of the churning water, destroying houses and stores, killing people by the hundreds. The people with Chen on the hilltop cried out in grief and anguish as they saw their city destroyed and their friends and relatives drowned.
When the water finally receded they just sat there on the hilltop, staring at the wreckage. Along with the Coastal Battleship several junks had been thrown on land and there were debris and bodies everywhere. The clean-up was going to be grim.

24 December, 1901

75 miles east of Manilla

The HMSS Rose, a cargo ship of 4,000 tons, was running due east at 8 kts loaded to the gunwales with relief supplies for the Philippines. The Capt. could see the smoke on the horizon suddenly get heavier, about 5minutes later they heard a loud rubbling
"What the hell is that about?" the Capt. said
"Sir," the lookout cried " The horizon is getting higher!!!"
"What??!!!!" but the Capt. could see for himself, he jumped for the ships whistle to sound the collision alarm but the wave hit at the instant he pulled the cord.

The world was turned upside down , he was thrown out the open bridge window, hitting his arm on the frame. He struggled to the surface dispite the pain in his arm, when he broke the surface the waves were still high but he could feel them calming. He looked around and saw nothing the at the top of a wave something to the left, he turned and looked in awe. His ship was bottom up her propellors still turning. Swimming closer he could hear a whistle blowing.
"Capt.!!!. Over here!!" Three crew members were clinging to an upturned and smashed lifeboat.
"what happened sir?" they ask
"A tidal wave, caused by the volcano erupting. My father told of Krakatao and how ships were swept from the sea and of whole islands being washed away. We are lucky to be alive. do any of you hear a whistle??"
"Yes sir"
"Let's head for the ship and check it out."
They went to the bow of the ship cause it was awash and they were able to climb aboard. They went aft but the whistling was getting louder
"Escaping air from the ship" a seaman said
"Listen!! Do you hear that??? A hammering sound??"
"OH MY GOD!!!!!!!! there's still men alive in there."
" There's nothing we can do. We have no tools and the ship is going down, we must get away before it does. You able body men will have salvage as much as you can before to try and build a raft, it may be days before we are rescued"

OOC
I revised my previous post, if it is decided to be a big one.

IC

The ORNS Diamant was on the Far East again. This time, 20nm Southwest of Manila Bay, steaming with a mere 3kts Southward. Since the Spanish Armada left Manila two months ago - for the Solomons by the spark-telegraph of the Rhodium- there was much less movement in and out of the harbour, save the Swiss raid on Manila. Her current shadow, a converted fishing vessel with a small gun bolted on the deck, under Spanish colors was 4 miles to the Northwest. Commodore Csepreghy assumed the other gunship's captain was happy that there was no war between Orange and Spain or whatever that country was called right now.

A shout from the lookout from his platform made him look up to the East. A huge, black coloumn of smoke was rising fast on the horizon. That cannot be the Pinatubo, that had to be to the Northeast, he thought, but he immediately froze for an instant realizing the consequences.

"Helmsman, bow to the East immediately!" - if he believed the tales of the Indonesian sailor from a mere 30 years ago, volcano eruptions were prone to cause huge tidal waves, small they might be on the open ocean, but far more dangerous in shallow seas. The Diamant was on a seaway right now, as open it can be between Luzon and te other smaller islands, but he decided that to err on the side of caution was acceptable.

The sea was deceptively calm, and seemed as if it started ebbing, but he was not sure without any reference point around. There was a strange smell of brimstone in the air, almost indiscernible on the ship smelling constantly from oil, smoke, sea, soot and men confined - but the coal in the magazine was prime quality, without a trace of sulphur. Meanwhile the rising smoke started to flatten out at the top, exanding like some gargantuan cauliflower on a long stem. The fishing vessel behind was keeping its heading, toward the cruiser, either clueless of the looming danger or just awestuck to do anything else.

Before he could utter another word - command to send a signal to the other ship, , all noises from the ship and the sea were supressed by a deafening sound, like how the gunfire of a whole broadside would be felt like from the gunwhales just above. It lasted for what seemed ages, rattling the ship to the last rivets. The commodore looked at the clock instinctively.
"Four minutes from the eruption...that should be forty or so miles" he muttered, deciding to check his charts later on.
The whole deck was in a confusion, as men did not regain their hearing immediately, but several of the petty officers were moving purposefully, gesticulating fanatically at seamen, who slowly gasped what their superiors wanted them to do.

The strange feel of an ebbing tide disappeared, and slowly the ship started to rise, almost unperceptible. A minute later a single ripple appeared on the sea far in the east, relatively low compared to the rise in the water level. Still, it kept rising inexorably as it came closer and closer, unbelievably fast, towering above the ship itself, for an isntant covering the hazy coast of the island behind. Then it slammed into the bow, shaking the whole ship from its force, covering the forecastle and the bridge with water, foam shooting almost up to the paltform, knocking several deckhands overboard.
Eventually the buoyancy of the bow won over the mass of water, and the ship, weather deck still drenched, shoot up from the water.

"Man in the water!" it was the lookout again, who miraculously managed to hold on the platform. One of the funnels started belching out thick smoke mixed with steam - some of the boiler tubes failed in the impact. Those who avoided being swept down, were throwing out ropes to the ones who did not.

"Sir..." he looked at the lieutenant on the bridge next to him.
"Yes, lieutenant?"
"The spanish vessel, sir, they..."
To the port, the underside of the vessel was floating on the water, desperate men swimming around.
"Ah, yes. Collect our men and pick up the survivors. Then head for the land, to see if anything remains of it."

The Diamant was literally limping when it approached the fishing port on the shore of Subic Bay, or whatever remained of it. There were two follow-up waves, those without the monstre ripple, rising the ship and lowering it down for a few minutes. After it, ash and rocks started to fall on the black cloud which by now covered monst of the sky.
The concussion from the blast and the sudden blow from the wave tore several rivets apart, and water started leaking into the hull through the damaged seams. Moreover, the damaged boiler and one engine had to be shot down, leaving a only the starboard propellor shaft working. Even so, the engines had to be laid idle for half an hour as the steam was needed to work the pump until canvas was pulled ove the largest of the leaks, and more steam was available.

In the town itself, fishing boats were scattered all across collapsed rooftops, some hanging from broken trees. An eerie silence filled the air. Dark lumps - presumably bodies and animal carcasses, still not discernible from the distance, were lying on the ground. The Philippinos by now were useless, some of them praying, some of them crying out of dispair or just standing numbly staring at the ruins.

"We put them ashore by a boat" Said the commodore to his exec." Then we pay a visit Manila. The bay should have protected it from the tidal wave, but they were much closer to the volcano itself."

Christmas eve, Greater Napoleon, for anchor at a pitoreque bay in French south Indochina, just after midnight.

On happier times , the shipboard chapelan rises his glass of wine.

A loud noise rattles the huge ship.

Oh my god, Oh merde, Captain I recognise this noise . I have heard this 30 years ago, when Krakatao went. But what volcano is close enough to rattle us like this?
I gather it must be Pinatubo on the Philipines. But that's a long way from here. 1500 km at least. We should be safe.

I don't know captain, we're vurnable here, if a monsterwave like then reaches us.
How do you mean Chapelan? Monsterwaves?

Back in 1883 I was as a young missionary with a Dutch expedition when a noise like this, with a blast of hot air shoved us in the mud and down the hill we were on.
We didn't know what happened untill we went back to our congregation after a few days. The horror when we did see the totaly destroyed village, the belltower was deposited on the hillridge overlooking the beaches. The few survivors told us that the sea pulled back, and then came back in a huge wave.
After the months of helping the locals who survived a Dutch sloop took us to Djakarta, and there we learned how bad it was. 36 000 people dead or missing, small islands wiped of the earth. Coastlines changed bad enough to get vessels stranded.

What do you think of now?

I'm a simple chapelan, but I learned that ships in full sea didn't notice anything unusual, except a strange wave or tide. But the coast got battered. I would say, lets play safe and move to open water.
I can imagine , but rousing the stokers on christmas eve and getting steam is a bit much don't you think. At least for a story that is 30 years old.

Captain, better safe than sorry, and the least we can do is signal our escorts so they can get in the open. Some of them still are with hot boilers.

Ok monsieur Garmen, lets get busy.
Marconi room, send a message to HQ, "Any news about natural disasters?"

Sir, no contact with HQ, to much noise in the air.

Engine rooms, get us steam we need to move rather fast.

Aye Aye Sir.

Half an hour later, the smaller escorts are steaming out of the bay, and the great funnels of GN are belching out smoke.
The seawater is pulling back at a frighting speed, the smaller vessels are taken as if they are canoes in a rapid. GN's anchors are crabbing, but the huge chains hold untill the huge ship settles in the soft mud
An eary silence settles over the area. The dark horizon glows faintly, as if white foam on a wave luminences.

A thundering noise comes closer at a rapid rate. The captain , on his bridge sees a wave hurling towards him, towering even over the smokestacks, and with the fist of god, all the windows are blown in.

An eternity later.

Captain, Captain ,glad you survived.
What happened ensign?

A monsterwave swept over us, ripped us from the anchorchains and destroyed the upper works except the turrets and conning tower. The smokestacks are smashed and the boilerrooms are soaked with seawater. Casulties are low, luckely enough, but we're beached.

I would like to know how far and how strong the tsunami from the volcano-blow-up went.
Because, as far as I could calculate both Indochina's, the Isle of Hainan, and the cities Macau and Hong Kong (actually the entire South China Sea coast) have been struck. I doubt the NS troops in Hong Kong came out of it unscathed. But I don't know whether the tsunami-pattern went further than that. It might mean Taiwan, the Strait of Taiwan and many NS islands... although I think the main island where the volcano erupted might have softended that blow in that direction and prevented the latter.

Lake Taal, Luzon, Phillipines

Smoke is rising from the volcano in the centre of the lake, but it doesn't deter 2 men from attempting to fish on the shore.

Sergent Richards:"Hey corpral, you got any fish over there?"
Corpral Phillips:"No sergent, they're dead, somethings wrong. Must be to do with the Volcano."
Sergent Richards:"No lad, can't be. The main eruption is at Mount Pinatubo, that smoke over there is just a side show."
Corpral Phillips:"Well, that smoke has been getting worse the last few days, and the earth's shaking a bit."
Sergent Richards:"Anyhow, belay that, hove you got any news from our observers about the war?"
Corpral Phillips:"Yes sir, the Swiss have basically beaten the Spanish back, and have a large beachead established. They now basically rule the phillipines in all but name now."
Sergent Richards:"Good, hopefully our new hosts will be nicer than the old ones. Any news on Juan's turn to communism?"
Corpral Phillips:"Yes, the Army has split loyalties, same with the Navy. One sailor I know said that the Home fleet has turned rebel, while the Armada has remained loyal to Juan."
Sergent Richards:"Well done Phillips, this is excellent news, and all the better for the Swiss. Get a pigeon and send your report to HQ in Jakarta."
Corpral Phillips:"Yes sir. I'd rather be there as well, these tremors are getting stronger!"
Sergent Richards:"Nonsence man, now whats for lunch?"
Corpral Phillips:"Well at the moment, one of the pigeons, neither of us have caught anything yet, they're all dead already."
Sergent Richards:"Yes they are, er Phillips, that smell, what is it?
Corpral Phillips:"Erm, sulpher and lots of it, look a cloud of it is coming from the volcano!

Suddenly the earth shook more violently than before, and when the 2 men looked up again at the volcano, it seemed to be spewing even more smoke.

Sergent Richards:"OK, I take back what I said, she's gonna blow, RUN corpral, RUN!
Corpral Phillips:"Yes sir!"

Hurridly he grabbed a piece of paper, scribbled a note, and tied it to a pigeon, just as he let go the the bird, the ground shook again.

Corpral Phillips:"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaah, my leg"
Sergent Richards:"Whats wrong? can you run?"
Corpral Phillips:"No sir, I'm a gonna. Save yourself"
Sergent Richards:"If you insist mate, see you soon I hope."
Corpral Phillips:"Just run sir, do your best to save yourself."

Not needing any further encouragement Sergent Richards ran off out of the crator, and started down the mountain, unfortunately it was too late.

4days latter
Intelligence office ,UKA Embassy, Jakarta, NEI

Major Daniels: "Any news from our lads in the Phillipines yet?"
Private:"Yes sir, 2 messages came in from our Wireless station on Samar Island this morning."
Major Daniels:"Well, I'm not a mind reader you know."
Private:"Well one is refering to the situation with the invasion and the revolution. The other is a report about they're status."
Major Daniels:"And what is they're status?"
Private:"I'm sorry to report that they are feared dead in the eruption of the Taal Volcano. This message from Corpral Phillips indicates that they were at the summit when the eruption started."
Major Daniels:"Oh dear, that is sad news. They are both to be postumosely awarded the DSO for bravery. Please inform they're families to this tragic loss."
Private:"Yes sir."

The Private left the room and went to the phone at his desk.

OOC: If my understanding of hydrodynamics is correct (which it probably isn't) the wave would be on the western side of the land mass that holds Lake Taal. Due to the numbers of islands to the south the wave will crush things south in the Philippines but loose energy rapidly. THe rest of the wave could probably travel as far north as Macau and Hong Kong, but due to the northern most islands of the Philippines, the rest of Asia to the east of that should be out of reach. Now westward, the wave would probably hit everything (or nearly everything) from Hong Kong/Macau, which it towards the farthest edge of the wavefront, down to the southern tip of Indochina with a little possibly slipping past to hit the nothern part of the Maylasian Pennisula. There are to many islands in the way for the wave to travel any farther south outside of the Philippines themselves.

I don't know if there would be a wavefront on the eastern side of the Philippines due to the distance between Lake Taal and the Eastern Coast.

Essentially the Rohirrim ship was lucky being far enough north to only get hit once, but probably encountered wrecks, that got hit with bouncing waves, all the way to the DBK.

OOC:

Tsunamis are not something I know a great deal about - my specialization in geology is in finding mineral deposits. However, I would not expect this event to have a significant impact outside the Philippines themselves; the distance even to Borneo is pretty far, and the wave energy should probably dissappate before it gets to the mainland. Consider the effects of the recent tsunami on Sri Lanka and mainland India - relatively modest compared to events in Indonesia and immediate environs. If anything on the mainland is going to be hurt, I'd say it's Vietnam and Hainan.

Within the Philippines, I would expect the worst damage to be:

-along southern Luzon, between Nasugbu and Lucena
-the northern coast of Mindoro
-Lubang Island and Marinduque I

...all of which may be hit repeatedly if the wave action is strong enough to reflect off the islands back at each other.

Moderate damage could be expected along the southeastern stretch and southwestern shore of Luzon, and the islands in the Sibuyan Sea.

Minor damage can be expected in various places around the Philippines, including Manila. I think that this city's location is actually fairly favorable for protecting it from wave action; the wave would have to reflect around almost in a circle to hit Manila Bay, and would lose a lot of energy in the process.

Vessels in deep water may not even notice the tsunami - it's the shallow water where the damage is done.

As for the blast itself, perhaps perhaps a thirty kilometer radius around the volcano has been devastated directly. Again, this leave Manila fairly clear. Depending on population density, we may be looking at a few tens of thousands of fatalities, and similar numbers of injured. So I don't think the immediate destruction is as bad as Marek reckons.

However - with local infrastructure devastated and tens of thousands of injuries, the medical facilities in the Philippines are going to be overloaded. The economy will be in a shambles - depending on the size of the eruption and the amount of ash involved, agriculture could be significantly hurt for a few years. Spain will have a huge burden on their hands for some time - unless the New Swiss decide to take it on for themselves.

All that said: if y'all want a worse catastrophe than that, fine with me. Your enthusiasm to jump in just caught me unprepared to describe what I thought the effects were going to be.

Manila is around 40-50km north of the Taal (guesstiamting looking at Google sat photos), so some pyroclactic flow/surge might have reached it (thanks to Wikipedia, i can throw such words around).

Tsunami: Any effect on open seas would be negligible, I introduced the 'ripple' (some small disdurbance due to unknown reasons) to have any dramatic effect on the ships.

OOC It's because Maddox asked me to write about devastation caused by a tsunami on the Chinese coast (like the harbour of Macau) that I thought the blast of the volcano was near-catastrophic. His suggestion was "Krakatau-like or even worse".

For my men at sea I just used recent information scientists spewed out about "freak gigantic waves". If I remember correctly such waves could be caused by a combination of wind and wave patterns. Given that the volcanic blast displaces quite a lot of air and the quakes related to it displaces water...

The land that he was born in was no more and no matter what will come will not wash this tragedy away.

Days later.

The people were gathering around a large tent.
Fire chief Marco Visa was in charge of delivering humanitarian aid to those who survived. What they recived was not even close to the neads. Those who survived had to live of fishing the only income of food left in the Philipines. The outside help from the mainland were the russian grain deliveries bught before the war to be deliver to Middle Kingdom. Now those already boght food was deliverd to them via every thing able to meke the jurney from China to Philipines.
Fishing boats fraighters oceanliner warships flying a red star were delivering anything they were able too.But still it was not enought.
They were desperate.

The Diamant did not get into Manila until next day. As the ship slowly closed the distance, smoke appeared again on the horizon - a thinner one, nevertheless a still menacing omen. That no ship was coming out the harbor was the second sign of the chaos on the shore.

Questioning harbor authorities revealed that the blast and the earthquake itself was not the biggest problem. Almost every glass window in the city shattered, but only lighter buildings were flattened at the Southern outskirts. The tidal wave did not have much effect. Although it threw several fishing boat on the shore, its level was barely above ground. Problems started when mobs formed in the raized quarters, and started in the direction of the more prosperous districts. At first, the garrison was sent out to quell the uprising, but after that spread, they were withdrawn to the walled Intramuros. Then the mob started looting, and put several buildings on fire. Gas pipes in few the gas-lighted areas broke, and gas explosions added to the fires. The city was saved only when the black rain - mixed with the ash of the eruption - started in the evening, preventing itsfurther spreading.

The Diamant took some Orange citizens - merchants, emissaries, and their families - on board, leaving only the consul and a small staff if Manila, and left for Phoenix.

Captain Cruise had a profound sens od Dejavu.
Althou this time he had a reason to behind his actions.
"Fire a warning salvo"
125mm gun rored. The Gran Columbia freighter stoped its engines a small boat has lounched from the cruiser. It closed to the freigther. Two men climed on bourd.
A discusion betwin the merchant ship captain accured the captain looked pisted.
On the boat a ailor was signaling back to the cruiser.
"They a are ferring live stock"reported Cruise's 2IC.
"Good, confiscate"
Cruise was not happy with what he was doing but non the less he had to get food to philipines.More important was the fact that this ship can carrie 1000t of grain fom MK to philipines. For once he was saving lives and not taking them.

26 December 1901

The Senora Isabella had survived the tsunami, but she would never sail again. To be certain, the damage could have been repaired, had she been young enough to be worth the effort and expense. The dead and injured crew - about half of the total complement - could be replaced. But all that was irrelevant, as the freighter now sat several dozen metres inland, in the general vicinity of where its destination had been.

Captain Peron and his company had seen a total of one living soul besides themselves in the past two days: a middle-aged woman they'd found staring at the ship's screw the previous evening. She had all sorts of painful but non-life-threatening injuries, and was clearly suffering from shock, but she was, inexplicably, alive nonetheless and now lying in Peron's own cabin.

The scene around them was horrific. The ocean and shore so completely covered in debris that only the up and down action of waves indicated where the shoreline actually lay. Further inland, around the ship, the land was scoured of all vegetation and other evidence of humanity except for the shattered hulk of the fishing trawler and a number of large rocks that hadn't been there before. Up along the ridge, a linear pile of debris marked the furthest extent of the tsunami. And uphill of that, not a tree remained standing; the slopes were littered with felled trees stripped of their branches and leaves by the foul blast of carbon dioxide and other gases.

Over it all, a vast grey cloud billowed upward in a pattern too complex for any mortal man to describe.

"We'll run it like this", Peron said to the assembled survivors. "Able-bodied men will work in shore parties to salvage anything we can use and, if possible, find other survivors. Walking-wounded will remain aboard ship tending to the more gravely injured and also maintaining watch - for passing ships, survivors on land, and the damned volcano. Sooner or later, we'll get picked up and be on our way home."

He didn't mention their actual reason for being here to his men; it was highly unlikely to be relevant anymore and would only cause complications with the locals.

3 January 1902

"The governor of the Solomons is making a request for shipping to transport supplies to the Philippines", Foreign Minister Torres noted to President Alizandro.

The Gran Colombian leader eyed Torres. "Why bring that up?"

"The area has been so devastated that food stocks are ruined and many ships in the region have been lost-"

"Including several of ours", interjected Industry Minister de Soto.

"-resulting in widespread hunger and the prospect of mass starvation", continued Torres, ignoring the interruption as best he could.

"Have the Philippines embraced this new socialist regime of Juan's?", Alizandro asked.

"There was widespread support amongst the peasantry", Torres confirmed, "But it was certainly not complete."

"Then we'll decline to participate", Alizandro declared.

Torres frowned but said nothing.

"You disagree with this, Eduard?", Alizandro remarked. "Think on this: the relief effort will bring Juan's war against the Swiss to a standstill. When the relief effort fails, as it invariably will, the survivors will blame Juan and the new government for failing them. They will rally around his opponents. And for those who stand by Juan, we can be satisfied that their ranks will be thinned by starvation."

"That seems rather harsh", Torres ventured.

"It is", the president agreed, "But we're playing a dangerous game against an opponent that would not spare us a moment's mercy if their revolution came to our shores."

"They are also dishonorable", De Soto observed. "My people in Jakarta are reporting that the Spanish have actually seized and looted at least one freighter flying our flag, even before we respond to their request."

"Indeed", President Alizandro commented. His ministers watched him think for minute, then heard him say, "Inform the Spanish government that we will seize assets of similar value if they continue this practice. Also, inform the shipping companies that their insurance policies will cover the losses if they choose to scuttle their vessels to avoid capture under such circumstances."

The Captain of the freighter was not the happiest person it the world.
The spanish or what evere they wanted to call himself officer was highjacking his ship.
"Captain Mendoza, i know that this is forced on You but You will not lose anything but time with this"
"And my ship and freedom"
"No You will be payed for your services, your armator will be payed also"
"Think of it like this. For you this is like a temporary boss change, you will be payed hazard fee, thats twice what You will earn if we did not stop You.
Your men will aslo be payed."
"With what? Some paper that is worght nothing?"
"With gold"
At that responce the captains eyes lit up.

QUOTE

The goverments of People's Empire of Sovering Nations Salomons and Philipines are offering.Payment in gold for any one that will agree to deliver food supplies to the philipines.

Marquez looked at the document that Lorca writen.
"Were did You get all that gold?"asked the admiral
"Im a governor of Salomons an important trade hub for the empire I have my share of riches."
Marquez razed an eyebrow.
"And I cosficated all gold from my wealghtier citizents.Same thing happend in the philipines"
"How long will the gold last?"
"three moungts 5 tops.We nead the help from the mainland.Alone we will starve to death"
"A wisemen one sead"the goverment will feed it self"
"Salomons will feed it self.I order to send all that we can spare to Manila and Davao. But what we cant give enough"
"Well I am stoping all ships that are able to make the way to MK for that russian grain. If I sail the armada to the mainland, it will no longer be able to stop that ships"
"I know that"

OOC, sorry for the delay. Been sick.

27th December 1901

Li Peide, the Grand Secretary of the Board of Feudatory Affairs and his colleagues Liaing Tung-yen from the Board of Foreign Affairs and Chang Chih-tung of the Board of Works kow-towed before their Empress. "Your Most Serene Majesty," Lin commenced, "there is dire news from the Islands of the Phillipines. They are indeed the source of the Great Disaster, the Hai xiao that so devestated our Southern Coast. One of their fire-mountains blew up and now the survivors there have no way to sustain themselves."
The Empress nodded. "I know our own losses are bad enough, could have been worse if not for the fact that the Elderly remembered what to do - and a more grim lesson to heed our Elders there never was !- but indeed others might be living in a hell right now. What are your suggestions ?"
Liaing frowned: "Apart from aid to our own people, they need shelter and food, and then to rebuild their towns and livelihoods, we can send some of the Russian grain Your Majesty has so wisely decided to order earlier this year. I know the Russians would rather send grain to the most stricken people, their reasons are most noble. A wise ruler must always see to the welfare of his subjects, as the Old Master has taught us. But compassion for strangers is an equally important virtue."
The Empress looked at Chang: "Are there sufficient stores for our people to sit out the winter and early spring ?"
"Yes, Your Majesty, there are if we ration them out. We were fortunate that Autumn was mild and that many of the young and elderly pitched in on the fields..."
"Hmm...", the Empress mused, "Remind me to set apart a day for honouring the Elderly and another day for the Young. This must be rewarded."
Chang continued: "As soon as the harbours are cleared we can send out ships with food, canvas and ropes for tents, and blankets. Ketttles for heating water and stoves for warming the tents. Sufficient fuel, I suggest coal. We should also send doctors, and their supplies too. They will need shovels. My secretaries think all this is most important."
"Let it be so.", declared the Empress. "Liaing, draft a letter to their governor, with Our sincerest sympathies, and offers of aid. Despite the war looming over all we cannot let barbarism descend onto civilization."
"Your Majesty orders, I obey."
She turned towards Chang who was still frowning. He looked up at her and tentatively asked: "But what about the unrest in the southern coastal areas ? And the growing number of Mandarins claiming the disaster shows that the Mandate of Heaven has been forfeited ?"
She looked grim. "I know tradition describes that the Emperor should go to the Forbidden City in order to fulfill His duty at the Temple here and beseech the Heavens for mercy. However, for His education He has already left. I have sent messages that He will visit several of the Venerable Mountains of Old and offer His prayers there instead. High up on those Mountains He will be closer to the Heavens, His prayers will have more effect, and His suffering while climbing those Mountains should move the Gods into accepting His devotions even more so. Have the newspapers and posters stress on that.
And as for the Mandarins... call their supervisors and delegations in Imperial Audience tomorrow morning. I will deal with them."
Chang shivered when he saw the look on Her face. Mops, he thought with alarm, we will need mops.
