25 Sept.
Boma, Congo

A RN gunboat on patrol 100 miles west of the Congo intercepted a small sailboat with over 50 people on board. The Capt. of the sailboat said they were from the island of St. Helena and that they requested asylum. He also said that there were 3 other boats following his. The gunboat Capt., a Lt.tz Klaasmaan, sent a message to Naval HQ Boma(carrier pigeon) reporting the intercept.
The refugees said that conditions on St. Helena were terrible and that supplies were getting short. The AMC Associate Director in charge was not releasing stored supplies and was charging outrageous prices. Wages were all months in arrears with the few soldiers and sailors present were just taking what they wanted.
They pleaded to Kapt. Klaasmaan to send help to their relatives left behind. They reported just 1 Trade Protection Cruiser in the port of Jameston, but it rarely leaves, along with 2 smaller naval vessels. After taking off the worst medical cases the GBL-1 took the schooner under-tow to Boma.
The Carribean Squadron(AF;HMS Kortenaar,SoW;HMS Zoutman & HMS Atjeh), no longer needed in area, has been ordered to St. Helena Island, with the HMS Atjeh stopping at Ascension Island. ETA at St Helena is Oct. 5 or 6. The HMS Belgium has been ordered to proceed to St. Helena from Boma.
