Death of an Idol

Carol the Great, King of Romania, looked proudly at the Czaraina, the 1st battleship of Romania. As it sailed into Constanta Harbor, Carol reflected on his life. He noted the day he had been coroneted, noted by long hours at the table with Russia to keep them from retaking Romania. He also remembered the day that he learned of the separation of Russia, and the joy of having one Russia to negotiate against another. He remember the day that he declared war on the Dutch, and the subsequent hatred of his fleet for its weakness. Well, this would make up for that. This was the future.
The guns on the Czaraina were loaded with flame shells, designed to be harmless and very loud and bright. When King Carol asked to see it fire, the naval commanders had no choice but to obey. These words turned out to be the last words he would ever say. The shock from the guns was so great to the fragile old king that he had a heat attack, never again to see again. Romania needed a new king.

August 28th, 1917

The King's Congress has begun, after the conclusion of the funeral of King Carol. So far, as far as can be determined, the forerunners for the new king are Prince Cronalin, a member of the Enescu family, and Baron Johanna, another member of the Hozelhollern family of the late king.

After the first two rounds of voting, only Baron Johanna and Prince Cronalin remain. The final election is scheduled for September 5th.

September 6th, 1917

Prince Cronalin is our new king! The Baron Johanna was beaten in a 35 to 10 vote, despite the mysterious disappearance of 5 pro-Cronalin delegates. It appears Romania wishes for one of its own to be the king. The inauguration is scheduled for October 31st.

King Cronalin stepped onto the podium and looked down at the vast multitudes of his subjects as he pulled out a sheet of paper. He began:

"Citizens, it has been a wild two years for us. We have gone from being the Leipzig Pact's little country of choice, to declaring war on them because they were fighting the King's cousin, to peace. Well, citizens, I have an announcement. This madness ends tonight.
Too long have we put up with an unstable regime. I plan to stop all of this. Romania will adopt a policy of strict neutrality, not interfering with any wars unless directly threatening Romania. The insane methods of our Navy will also be stopped, with the Navy acting as middle-men. In fact, I will stop this method of our former ruler of giving half of the budget to the military. The expansion of our facilities, besides those that are already in progress, will be stopped, and the navy will be limited to adding 6,000 tons to the navy a year. All of this money being stolen for the military will be sent, instead, to improve the economy of this country. I humbly accept my nomination as King. Thank you."
