 2 January
The allegations by the Anahuac Empire regarding "rape and pillage" by soldiers of the Leigon Kondor are the worst sort of rumourmongery. Unable to defeat them on the field of battle, they attempt to smear their name in the court of world opinion. But of course we would expect no less from "the other evil empire"!

The true conduct of Colonel Hammer's Legion Kondor in the War of New Belieraland has been exemplary, with the enemy having been reported on more than one occasion to have broken immediately upon determining who they were opposing. There record is such that the Confederate voluenteers have reportedly nicknamed them "Hammer's Slammers"...

4 January
It was today announced that the Kreigsmarine's First Battle Squadron will mark the anniversary of the crowning of Kaiser Friedrich III by opening formal diplomatic relations with the Middle Kingdom of China.

It is hoped that the 3 March event at Tianjin will lead to new economic oppertunities for DKB merchants, as well as being the beginning of a beautiful friendship...

10 Jaunary
Governor Heinrich Schnee of Königsland today dedicated the townsite of Neue Danzig (ooc: @ Cairns, Queensland), the capital of our territory on the continent of Australia. The small port currently lacks military facilities, but it is reported that the Admiralstab is intending to rectify this at the earliest oppertunity.

14 January
It appears that the Caliphate of Cairo has taken exception to the formation of the Republic of Central Australia. It is reported that the Caliph has declared that either they be allowed to occupy the territory or they will take it by force.

Why does it seem that the majority of the world is made up of evil empires, religious fanatics, or both?

17 January - Ost Afrikan Times
With the cloud of potential war with the Caliphate of Cairo looming, the "golden spike" of the Ost Afrikan Eisenbahn was driven yesterday west of Mpwapwa with little fanfare.

The Ost Afrikan E-Bahn consists of two main lines. The first, completed three years ago, runs from Nairobi to Mombasa, then south along the coast through Tanga and Dar-es-Salaam before terminating at Mtwara.

The new route just completed is a roughly east-west link from Mwanza to Dar-es-Salaam via Dodoma.

A third route, connecting Kigoma and Tabora to the main system at Dodoma, has been discussed but will likely be delayed until the threat of war has passed.

18 January
It appears that the Caliph of Cairo is determined to throw away his forces in a futile effort of conquest on the Australian continent. Rumours are flying that additional DKB forces will soon be deployed to Königsland to join the cavalry corps already present.

It would also appear that the threat of war has lead to a reduction in "harassment" by Francophile settlers, as attacks on Heer patrols have slacked markedly in the past month...

21 January
It was announced yesterday during Chancellor Bismarck's address to the Reichstag that the Republic of Central Australia has signed the Treaty of Brandenburg as a full member power.

This means that any hostile acts by the Caliphate will bring down the full force of the "Quadruple Alliance" down on their heads. We encourage any of the Caliph's soldiers who may see this newspaper to give thought to what gain their deaths could possibly bring to a vain and doomed charge after futile glory!

23 January
The threat of war has lead the Admiralstab to alter the planning for the upcoming diplomatic visit to the Middle Kingdom.

A Fregattenkapitan, speaking for the Admiralstab, stated "Unfortunatly the threat of war has lead us to alter the ships being sent to the Middle Kingdom, as First Battle Squadron will likely be needed elsewhere. Instead, we will be sending the brand-new cruiser Prinz Heinrich, which will be making the trip as part of her shakedown cruise."

Work on Prinz Heinrich appears to have been accellerated, as crews have been seen working on her well into the night. Rumours that her commissioning has been moved up from 22 Feburary by up to two weeks have not been confirmed, but given sailing times to China from Brandenburg and the need for even the breifest of workups first, this seems rather likely.

24 January
Two chartered transports left Brandenburg yesterday, carrying the III Infantry Corps "Taipan". Their destination is unstated but believed to be Neue Danzig...

26 January
A parade of ships left Brandenburg harbour yesterday. Under the personal command of Großadmiral Baron von Letters, First Battle Squadron, the cruiser Fürst Bismarck, and the four boats of First Torpedo Group sailed for the New Swiss port of New Amsterdam, where rumour has it that the Baron will be assuming overall command of a joint DKB-New Swiss naval force.

Diplomatic dispatch 12 January (meaning the French people won't be informed by the Paris Temps)

The 11 detained deserted Legion Kondor mercenaries are found guilty of the attrocities Anuhuac civilians reported to the French officials in the Great Canal zone.

Now the Great Canal zone administrators have a problem.
Normaly the detained group would be transported to the Deutsche Kaiserreigh Brandenburg consulate in Suriname.
But with the witnesses and the confessions of the 11 this looks not the best solution.

What is the wish of the Kaiserreigh? The normal punishment for deserting in a warzone? Or the punishment on the civilian offences they made?
And then. The Brandenburger punishment? The Great Canal zone law? Or the Anuhuac punishment?

Secret Diplomatic Note to the French Empire from the Deutsches Kaiserreich Brandenburg, via the good offices of the Kingdom of Siam
27 January

Good sirs,

The situation of the 11 Legion Kondor deserters provides a most delicate and unusual situation.

These men are not military personnel of the DKB, but civilian mercenaries. Also they are assumed by the DKB to have known and assumed any and all risks associated with their service upon signing up. As such, we have taken the liberty of consulting with Colonel Hammer of the Legion Kondor regarding this matter, whom we are informed is gravely concerned regarding this matter, which reflects badly upon the honour of his Corps.

After discussions, we propose that these men be escorted to the coast of the Great Canal zone at a date of France's convienence. They along with a representive from the French Government and one from the Anahuac Government will be picked up by a packet boat (ooc: a banana boat, actually tongue.gif ) and transported to L.K. headquarters where they will stand trial on charges of desertion, and also on the charges which have been made against them by the Anahuac. If found guilty, which we believe is likely given the evidence provided, they will be sentenced to execution by firing squad.

We appreciate your confidentiality and tact in this matter, and await your reply.

Count Bernhard von Bülow, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs

(As a personally-written footnote, Count von Bülow adds: "I am surprised and delighted at the candor and professionalism of the French Empire in this matter, and hope that perhaps in some future day when our nations can live at peace, we can look back at this affair as the start of the process torwards that noble goal.")

(ooc: the delay in responding was due to the need for the convuloted routing from France to the DKB, then the need to consult with the "men on the spot" before replying...how fast is a trans-pacific packet boat? And what is the state of wireless in 1900 Navalism-verse?)

Good questions actualy.

I belive the telegraphy network works pretty fast. Especialy for gouvernements wanting it to work fast.
Between gouvernements a message can be transported in minutes, if the bureaucracy doesn't get in the way.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transatlantic_telegraph_cable

30 years after the first transatlantic wire + did a lot of international communication.

Also the newfangled idea of wireless telegraphy is being researched all over the world. Problem is, the inventors and countries are greatly different now.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio

My idea's
Real secret messages can't be send by telegraph. Due the ease of tapping the wire.
So , "telegraph messages" can be posted on the forum.
I could let lady luck be involved. But then I need % possibility of interdiction of messages.
To send a real secret message to another continent it takes at least X amount of time, and mostly will be done by normal packet boats, but if it is urgent, courriers or the fastest long distance naval vessels can be used.
(forum, PM's.)

Most newsreporters can't afford the cost and the bureaucracy involved to send news over the globe. Newpaper snippets will be at least dated X amount of time. Unless it is very important.

X depending on distance and location.

Fleets don't have "instant" communication, unless in a major port or naval base. But that's why admirals are used as fleet commanders.

30 January

With war against the barbarous forces of the Caliphate imminent, our diplomats have secured a long-festering sore in our foreign relations. The long dispute with the Ottoman Empire over Kuwait, which we inherited back when the Prussian Empire acquired the former Norman territory¹, has been resolved. The DKB will pay 2 million Kaisermarks² to the Ottoman Empire, who will in turn "clear the books" of their claims to the territory. In addition, the Ottomans will be granted free access to the port, and it is hoped that a formal trade and non-agression treaty can be negiotiated soon.

¹ - Unless The Powers That Be™ say otherwise, I'm assuming the Normans had this historically British colony up until their defeat by the French, at which point the Prussian vultures swooped in. wink.gif

Well less spanish interferance. Their had to be some in the southern parts of the Confederacy, or else several of those places would not have those names (San Diego, Florida, California. Things like that.)

Broadly, I expect the Spanish to have colonised Texas and other parts of the Western Gulf Coast, along with their Cuban posessions. The French once held parts of the Gulf Coast, but left for some reason early on - perhaps disagreements with the Spanish?
