 Naval Gazetteer, 5 April 1899

Finally, the Navy has disposed of the positively dangerous Torpedo Rams of the TR-7 class! Replacing them, of course, are further ships of the TR-111 class, which is so far proving successful in service. No fewer than fifteen of these magnificent vessels have been laid down this quarter, with more to follow.

This is in stark contrast to the experimental submersible, which is currently grounded in ten fathoms of water near Miami. All six crew aboard at the time have safely escaped, but the ship is not expected to resurface without assistance. It is believed that the compressed air bottles aboard malfunctioned, trapping the vessel below water.

Richmond Telegraph, 19 April 1899

The President today signed the Treaty of Cali with Gran Columbia, a non-aggression treaty that establishes the rights of each nation to certain territorial waters, and guarantees that neither will interfere with the internal affairs of the other signatory, whether by diplomatic or military means.

In contrast to other treaties of recent months around the world, no trade or military terms were agreed upon, save the determination of a 200 nautical mile exclusive fishing zone. The treaty will be in force for five years, or one year after either signatory declares a wish to withdraw, whichever occurs first.

Los Angeles Gazette, 2 May 1899

The Wellesley Investigation has made some progress into the train bombing last December. It now appears that the same group was behind both this and last month's bank robbery in Phoenix, although how this has been determined has not been made public. Evidence now suggests that the group may be in some way associated with a radical religious group.

Richmond Observer, 19 May 1899

In Houston yesterday, some three thousand men – and even, it is alleged, a few women – gathered in Independence Square, answering the rally to form a Legion of Freedom. Although many are believed to be working-class Christians, one of the most notable members of the group was Thomas Ismay, the shipping magnate behind the White Star Line.

He has pledged that he will fund the carriage of any volunteer to New Beleriand who cannot afford his own transport. This is the latest offer of its' kind, surpassed only by the offer of the Colt Firearms Company to arm every volunteer. With these – and other – acts of generosity behind them, there are an estimated fifty thousand volunteers attempting to secure passage to the front.

With this level of support, the Anahuac can scarcely withstand the force being brought to bear on them by the people of the free world. We can only hope that this will accelerate their demise.

Orlando Mercury, 6 June 1899

Another tragedy struck the rail network on Monday, as a military train from Miami to Jacksonville was inadvertently switched onto the civilian line to Tallahassee. The train was derailed, spilling its' cargo of cordite and explosive shells over both rail lines. Although the crew of the train managed to run clear, the Appalachia Diamond express train was unable to stop in time and collided with the wreck, causing the deaths of seven passengers and the Diamond's engine crew.

An enquiry into this tragedy has been started jointly by the Department of War and the Sunshine Coast Rail Company.

Naval Gazetteer, 7 June 1899

Corruption is being alleged at the National Metallurgical Institute, where two major research programs are ongoing, into more modern armour plating and methods of producing heavier guns than is currently possible.

Dr. Gustav Krupp, leading the research into heavy artillery, has claimed that no significant progress has been made into the problems of his department, in spite of being allocated millions of dollars of Federal funding over the past years. With this funding, he claims, the Institute should have succeeded in building at least one test barrel of 13.5" calibre, the target of the Navy.

Soldier Magazine, 22 June 1899

Lieutenant Rockefeller, the aviation pioneer, was killed yesterday in a tragic accident. His R-1 balloon, with a fixed structure holding the balloon canopy apart, is believed to have disintegrated in mid-air. Witnesses claim to have seen a fireball not unlike that produced when conventional balloons are hit by lightning.

50,000?! That's enough for four micelhusl, plus command and support staff! They'll be poorly trained, rather self rightous, and may or may not get along with their Rohirrim and Gondorian benefactors. However....would they get along with the Germans? With all this support, Rohan could field a Volunteer Army in the coming quarters.

What was that quote? "God created man and woman, but Colt made them equal."

While this might be a war of "common cause" for the German Mercinaries and Confederate Christian Volunteers, the locals aren't exactly Christians either....though they don't go around sacrificing them to what the Gondorians would call "the Enemy" either.

Funny...Rohan is in possession of Mordor at this time. I wonder if the Anahuac even know to what they truely pray to and for, and if they know the lands to the north that were probably once theirs. I am assuming they were decendants of the Southrons and maybe Easterlings from 8,000 plus years ago.

I wonder what Gran Columbia will do when 50,000 Confederates show up near their northern border (Costa Rica is all that seperates Rohan from them). I'd also hoped that marlowe would come back, because these actions might effect his Commonwealth.

Hey Maddox! Will the French support their Allies? Or let fight it out alone?

Hey! I didn't say they'd be going - that's the estimated number trying to go. Of those, I'd expect perhaps half to actually arrive, either due to death or lack of commitment.

Of course, they will be, as you say, poorly-trained and misguided about the war. To most of them, Rohan and Anahuac are only something read about in the Observer, which is never the most reliable source of news.

Gran Columbia will probably object vociferously, and claim that its' a secret attempt to overthrow them whilst they're hamstrung by the Non-Agression Treaty (I'll prepare a text of it sometime soon).

It is a pity that marlowe's not here - I was planning a diplomatic incident involving torpedoes and armoured cruisers that would involve him...

Here seems a good place to mention that our Moderator threw me a curveball awhile back, and when the second part of the Legion Kondor sets out in Q3, it will bring the total strength of said Legion to a corps in size...

Well even with 25,000 troops, plus the Legion Kondor, I suspect that enough of them will be out with things like yellow and typhoid fevers to make the total effective strength of these forces about 2 corps. That is enough to bolster the lines of Rohan's armies during this crisis until the reserves can bolster the Army of Rohan to the point where the Northern Army of the Anahuac's siege fails and the glory of Gondor is avenged by taking the lands of the Enemy.
