Submarines... a question

Are we limited to submarines with EXACTLY the specifications in the chart?
Could we choose to modify some of those attributes somewhat, or are they 100% written in stone.

For instance, can we swap out torpedo capacity on a 1910 submarine for some mine-laying capacity? Or could we arrange the torpedo tubes differently, say 3 forward and 1 aft instead of 2 forward and 2 aft?

Basically, I wanted to build a 500t submarine that had 3 tubes forward and 1 tube aft instead of one that had 2 tubes forward and 2 aft. That was all I wanted to change about it- nothing to do with speed, range, or number of torpedoes (though I might consider a minelayer if that was possible).

I don't see that the tube arrangement needs to be fixed in stone...

Thanks for the quick reply, Rock.
I'll wait for the rest of the Mods to weigh in before I do anything, as this might open a FAR larger can of worms than I might have imagined. :-[ But at least I feel free to go ahead and finish up my budget. ;D

Happy to help.  I'll keep an eye out for worms...

No problem here. The chart to me is meant to illustrate capabilities, not guarantee that we all build exactly the same sub for that tech level.

Carthaginian

Thanks, guys... that's all I needed to know.

The more I have thought about it the more I have thought we should ditch the pre-defined mine layers I came up with.  Instead we should have something like this.

Adding mine laying to a design costs 2 torpedo tubes in exchange for an aft minelaying tube and every torpedo traded gets you 3 or 4 mines.

I like that idea, Mike... with 4 mines per torpedo (at least), as many historical minelayers in the 500t range carried 15 mines or more and still managed a full load of torps. The Type UC II (an exceptional little boat) had 18 mines, 7 torps and 3 tubes!
