It was announced today that effective 15 April,1898, Sr. Admiral Joost
von Lewthwaite will replace retiring Sr.Admiral Karl Vanderzee as
Commander Naval Forces NEI.

Adm. Lewthwaite previously commanded the 1st Battle Squadron based here.
His first order of business will be to see to the upgrading of the port of
Jakarta on Java. A new building slip is reported to be building there.

Adm. Lewthwaite has over 25 years of sea duty under his belt including
the commanding the old Battleship 'Princess Alberta' on the cruise around
the world in 1885. Also commanding the Congo Flotilla before taking
command of the 1st BatRon in 1896.
He has been married for 22 years and has 3 children, a son, Karl 21 a
newly commissioned Jr Lt. and 2 daughters 20 and 18. His wife and
daughters will be joining him in Singapore.


In other news the new Armoured Frigate ANTWERP and the Sloops JAVA &
CELBES are getting ready to conduct a 'show the flag' cruise with ports of
call in Rabual, Brandenburg, New Amsterdam and possibilly others.
It is reported that they cruise is on hold until the Foriegn Affairs
Office can make arrangement with the various governments.
