The "Gondor Question" and Its Resolutions

Ever since the War of 1870, the Government has sought to maintain the status quo in Central America by peaceful means. There is a growing feeling, however - in circles both official and otherwise - that the situation there is ultimately unsustainable. It is better for the Commonwealth, the interventionists argue, to choose a side and start a war now, two against one, than to wait for events to take their own course and possibly widen into a larger and bloodier conflict. Though there are known to be adherents of the interventionist camp in the Senate, the State Council has so far stood solidly behind the policy of conciliation championed by Sir Sebastian Marlowe. The Times fully supports the Government in this position at least; the rewards of a conflict in Central America are not nearly commensurate with the risks. It is to be hoped that the leaders of the Empire and the Mark share this opinion, and that the "Gondor Question" will continue to be settled by negotiation rather than force of arms.
