27/5 Whitsun:
Still very windy, prepared the moskoxmeat for our journey, we shot three hares. During the night the wind died down.

28/5
It was foggy when we woke up, and we went further into the fjord, after driving 45 km we stopped, we are eager to find out whether this is a fjord or a sound.
Where we camped we found remains of a fox-trap, it must have been made by humans a long time ago.

29/5

We vent a further 15 km into the end of the fjord; we found some driftwood and turned back.

30/5

We left at 3 in the morning. Around noon we arrived to the place where we had shot the Musk oxen.
We lit a fire of driftwood and ate dinner.

31/5

Beautiful weather, we allowed the dogs to have an eating frenzy, so we waited till noon before we departed.

3/6

Around Midnight we met our comrades.
(This event is related to the very unlikely meeting between Sledge team 2 and Sledge team 1 at the North-East promontory, during this meeting it was decided that Team 2 would return to the base camp using as little as possible from the remaining depots and Team 1 would further excavate the Independence Fjord as to determine weather Pearyland is an island or a part of peninsular Greenland.)

5/6
Went into the fjord (Independence fjord), overcast, it is beginning to thaw, travelling is becoming more difficult.

7/6
At last we arrived to our goal (Navy Cliff with Peary's cairn).

10/6
Ate the last moskoxmeat together with some I prepared with all our leftovers. Have only some oatmeal left for one meal.

11/6
Had to kill a dog to feed the other dogs, from this moment onwards we were pestered by bad luck, very seldom anything to hunt and if anything we did not catch/shoot anything. The dogs are getting weaker day by day.

21/6 Tried to move on, but the thawing of snow and the weakened dogs make it impossible. We decided to stay over the summer, and hope we will be able to hunt during the summer so the dogs can regain their strength. (From hereon dairy entries becomes more and more erratic.)

1/7
Team 2 returns to Danmarkshavn without any incidents.

13/7
Shot a Musk ox, took a thigh back to the camp to the elation of my comrades.

14/7
We returned to the Musk ox I shot yesterday and luckily we shot a further 5 and a calf, and decided to stay at this place.

Borys

Whats the difference between "sound" and "fjord"?
Remionds of the stories about Nansen and Amundsen I read in my youth.

You are not nice to me Borys ;),It is hard for me to explain, especially in English,a fjord has an "end",a sound is like the E.G. Baltic Approaches,(the Great Belt ,the Sound)

Borys

Yay! I understand now  - so fjord is a bay/gulf, a sound is a strait/passage.
Hmm - Inever wondered about the meaning of sound (nautical) in English.
