The Rock Doctor

This category consists of four types of vessel under the 1916 classification system.

Patrol Sloops (PS) are ocean-going patrol and escort vessels, with moderate anti-surface and anti-submarine capability.

Patrol Gunboats (PG) are coastal patrol vessels optimized for surface actions and piracy patrols.

Patrol Cutters (PC) are coastal patrol and escort vessels, with light armament.

Patrol Boats (PB) are local patrol and harbour inspection vessels with very light armament and little in the way of endurance.

Iscuande Class

The Iscuande class sloops are intended for ocean-going work, patrolling GC sealanes and escorting merchants in areas where bandits may be an issue.  They have a modest armament, include a twin torpedo carriage aft.  They are also equipped with steam launches and accommodation for a half-platoon of marine constables to facilitate ship inspections.  The upper hull and deck are protected against small-arms fire in the event that an inspection doesn't go too well.

Fourteen units have been laid down thus far; further orders are expected.

El Banco Class

(For illustration, refer to the smaller unit accompanying the Iscuande, above).

The El Banco class is a patrol cutter intended for coastal use.  Being close to home waters, they have left out the torpedoes and armor.  Since they're fairly small, it's envisioned that they will go alongside to undertake boardings, so steam launches are omitted.  They have accommodation for a squad of marine constables for inspections.  As with the Iscuande class, they are trimmed for stability, rather than steadiness, as it is expected that they might be out in stormy weather to perform rescue missions.

PB-01 Class Patrol Boat

This is the PB-01 type patrol boat, intended for riverine, near-shore, and harbour patrols.  There is no expectation that the type will be of use in fighting a warship - rather, it's basically policing civilians, undertaking search and rescue missions, and watching for more significant issues that the Armada would then be summoned to resolve.  For the latter purpose, a short-ranged wireless has been fitted.

The boats have minimal accommodations (despite the SS report) - probably just a small galley, a head, a few cramped bunks, and a first aid station.  The crews will be based ashore or, if in transit between stations, just sleep wherever they can find a few square feet.

Approximately twenty-five units will be built in 1908, and additional units will likely follow in subsequent years (because, if nothing else, they're something I can dump leftover BP into...)

Puyo Class

The Iscuande class patrol sloops have provided mostly satisfactory service over the past few years, but one short-coming has become evident with those units operating in the Pacific:  inadequate bunkerage for the long haul between the Pacific Territories and the West Coast.

A new class of sloops is to be built specifically with Pacific operations in mind.  Their operating range is considerably greater than that of the Iscuande class, and the main armament is heavier.  The light armor found in the Iscuandes has been omitted here.

Matadi Class

The Matadi class sloops are a larger cousin to the recent Puyo class sloops, and will be found escorting fleet auxiliaries and civilian convoys.  The class has been designed with an older generation of machinery to allow orders to be placed with overseas yards - in this case, Romania has been contracted to construct at least two.

Though the type is as large as an S class destroyer, and almost as heavily armed, it trades speed for seakeeping and the hull strength necessary for a long career on the open ocean.

Florencia Class Gunboat

The Florencia class gunboats are designed for anti-piracy patrols in the western Caribbean - specifically, boarding and inspection of suspected pirate vessels.  To this end, they are well-equipped with a range of rapid-fire ordnance, and are armored against small-arms fire.  A squad of marine constables are carried, both for boarding other vessels or, in the worst case, defending the gunboat against pirate boarders.

It is expected that the type would also be useful in escorting coastal or local convoys, though no ASW capability is presently included.

The armament and armor preclude the same speed and operating radius found in larger Colombian sloops, but performance is adequate for the area and the gunboat is unlikely to be outrun by captured merchant ships usually favored by pirates.  In the face of something faster or more powerful, a long-range wireless allows the gunboat to call in heavier Armada forces.

The Rock Doctor

Boma Class Patrol Sloop

This is a follow-on to the Matadi class sloops, though with newer machinery and consequently greater speed.  They will have similar operational roles - protection of fleet auxiliaries and trade.  A half-dozen have been ordered from the DKB, though the armament will be supplied by Gran Colombia.
