Sistine Chapel Early Evening Sunday February 5th 1913.

Again it had been a long day of Prayer and Politics a unique mix probably unique in the world.  But the prayers were over and the votes counted and the results were shocking.  Failure, Cardinal Maffi failed to elect by just three small votes.

Results of the Fourth Ballot are as follows.

Felix Cardinal Romero     17
Louis Cardinal Billot       1
Aristitde Cardinal Rinaldini       2
Desire-Joseph Cardinal Mercier       1
Giacomo Cardinal Della Chiesa       1
Pietro Cardinal Maffi     37

OOC:  If you are a supporter of either of the two factions please talk to your factions and play some politics before the next round.  If your not a supporter of either faction well play politics after all the Bribes and promises at this point could be impressive just not in cash.  Who wants to be Nuncio, who wants a new Bishoporic in there country.  Who thinks the next Pope should create more foreign [Non European] Bishops and Cardinals.

Sistine Chapel Vatican City Rome – Monday February 6th 1913 after morning prayers

Actors:
Aristide Cardinal Rinaldini – Camerlengo of the College of Cardinals
Francesco Cardinal Della Volpe – Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church

Cardinal Volpe "Well Aristide I though we had our candidate, but evidently at least a few of Maffi supporters were not what they appeared to be.  By my count our politicking should have pulled in at least 39 ballots not the 37 Cardinal Maffi received.  So do you think we should approach Romero directly or just go directly to looking for a caretaker candidate."

Cardinal Rinaldini "I don't know, realistically I don't believe either of us was a great fan of Pietro but he appeared to be the easiest candidate to elect that met our criteria.  Now the possibilities exist for us to bring the French around to a compromise candidate more acceptable to us now that it appears that there favorite has reached an impasse. "

Cardinal Volpe "I agree, you know I personally preferred a more conservative candidate from the start but if our choice in the area were limited to Cardinal Billot and Cardinal Romero then I just didn't see a way to sway 40 ballots to either of those candidates." Pause to think for a moment, "You know you mentioned yesterday after the vote something one of the Iberians said, would they be open to a compromise candidate someone suitably older then young Maffi as Cardinal Rodriquez so succinctly put it yesterday."

Cardinal Rinaldini "Its definitely possible that we could get an agreement on a compromise candidate from both sides.   We might have to make the situation seem worse to the French then it actually is we might still be able to elect Maffi but we would have to force the issue to do so.  In the end I really just don't like him enough to force the issue down our brother Cardinals throats.  But if we say we honestly tried to elect him and we did honestly try.  But that the votes to elect just don't exist without Maffi risking voting for himself then we can turn this mess to our advantage?"

Cardinal Volpe."Its agreed then you will approach the Iberians again and I will approach Cardinal Rodriguez and see if we cant try to reach an compromise before we all end up on Bread and Water.  I would so miss breakfast."

Cardinal Franz von Bettinger : So, von Stammler, the support for your second candidate has nearly evaporated.
Cardinal Jakobus von Stammler :  I note that Mercier received a vote again, are you being stubborn in your support?
Cardinal Franz von Bettinger : I reassessed and voted accordingly. You?
Cardinal Jakobus von Stammler : Rinaldini is a good man and would be good for the Church.  However in this election the conclave seems to be choosing the wings.
Cardinal Franz von Bettinger : As I said, this should be resolved on the 4th ballot. It is always possible the conclave will remain split, in which case a more moderate candidate could persevere.
Cardinal Jakobus von Stammler : That would be my hope. Still, I am prepared to proceed slowly to ensure the best for Church and flock. Who knows, perhaps you will find reason to vote for Mercier again.

"I wonder whether it is time to consider conceding", Cardinal Romero mused.

"What?", Cardinal Rodriguez exclaimed.

"You heard me, brother.  The trend is clear - the College is going to elect Brother Maffi.  Why delay the inevitable?"

"It's not inevitable, Brother", Rodriguez hastily replied.  "Minds can be changed, and there is no lack of concern about aspects of young Maffi."

"He's just three votes shy of the requirement", Romero noted.  "Eventually, he will be elected, and stonewalling on our part will only reflect poorly upon us afterward."

"Yes, but if we do continue to contest his election, perhaps the message will be received by Maffi's backers, and they will look to a more acceptable candidate."

Romero sighed.  "Very well - let us maintain our direction for another round and see what happens."

Sistine Chapel  Monday Morning February 6th 1913.

The Cardinals had been busy many had been seen in long conversations late into the night after yesterdays last ballot.  Some of them were still carrying on conversations even as they breakfasted this morning.  Now many simply waited patiently for what would come of those conversations.  For some they simply waited for what they hopped was a chance to continue those conversations to a successful conclusion.

The Results of the Fifth Ballot were as follows

Felix Cardinal Romero     16
Louis Cardinal Billot       1
Aristitde Cardinal Rinaldini       1
Giacomo Cardinal Della Chiesa       2
Pietro Cardinal Maffi     38
Jakobus Cardianl Stammer       1

When the Votes had finally be tabulated some of the Cardinals appeared shocked again failure to elect by and this time by a mere 2 Votes.  But some among the Cardinals actually appeared relieved at the outcome of the vote.  And even as the Cardinals filed out to await Lunch many were already talking about the apparent deadlock in the voting.

Cardinal Franz von Bettinger : So, von Stammler, I see you have stealthy worked your way into the running.

Cardinal Jakobus von Stammler :  I was rather presuming you had nominated me as a bit of misplaced humor.

Cardinal Franz von Bettinger : I may indulge my whimsy too often, but not in this case. Perhaps it marks the beginning of a great sweep to the middle.

Cardinal Jakobus von Stammler : There are far more prominent moderates from whom to chose. Perhaps you may choose to do so now?

Cardinal Franz von Bettinger : A moderate Thomism with a mild penchant for reformation....you have potential, but I think you are correct, the conclave is not ready. It is besides the point, I . I have confidence in my man.

Cardinal Jakobus von Stammler : I of course was not referring to myself, rather perhaps somebody more known to the conclave. For my part I worry that a divided Church may be weak in her new home. However, vote your conscience , there is plenty of time before they deny us food.

Cardinal Franz von Bettinger : Ahh but as long as there is enough wine I may be so insensible as to not care if I eat.

Borys

Here is how I figure the various candidates from the 1st Vote :
Others may have different intepretations....

Diemede Cardinal Falcone - Mod-Liberal, advocated ministering in minority languages and advancing ethnic bishops

Desire-Joseph Cardinal Mercier - Mod-Liberal, respected philosopher, Thomist, advocated conversations with Anglicans.

Felix Cardinal Romero- Conservative

Archbishop Maria Salvador Y Barrera- Iberian, leaning unknown, presume moderate

Enrique Almaraz Cardinal Santos- Iberian royal preacher, Senator (OTL), likely conservative

Joaquim Arcoverde Cardinal Cavalcanti- Brazilian, initially refused appointment as bishop, presume strong willed and independent minded.

Louis Cardinal Billot - Jesuit, Thomistic scholar, important metaphysicist/theologian, conservative French nationalist

Louis Cardinal Lucon - Doctorate of theology and canon law, latter likely marks him as conservative.

Aristide Cardinal Rinaldini- Graduate of Jesuit university in Theology/philosophy,  Long time diplomat, serving in Portugal, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands (OTL). Likely Moderate.

Francesco Cardinal Volpe- Eldest Cardinal, from Italian Noble family, likely conservative.

Giacomo Cardinal Chiesa- Historical choice, devotee of Mary, fostered Canon Law- simplifying the existing body of rules, Improved Papal relations, likely Moderate-Conservative

Pietro Cardinal Maffi – Taught philosophy and sciences, Founded meterological society and museum of Natural history, science-leaning, Liberal

Antonio Cardinal Vico – Doctorates in philosophy, theology, and (effectively) law. Served as diplomat, likely conservative.

Sistine Chapel Vatican City Rome – Monday February 6th 1913 immediately before the next ballot

Actors:
Aristide Cardinal Rinaldini – Camerlengo of the College of Cardinals
Francesco Cardinal Della Volpe – Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church

Cardinal Volpe "Well we need some more Moderate candidates I mean so far I have no real consensus among the Groups.  We have  Cardinal Chiesa,  and if you will pardon me yourself Aristide "

Cardinal Rinaldini Looking slightly shaken. "You will pardon me if that thought does not bring me the greatest of joy but I would really prefer if we can find another far more suitable candidate for the job then myself."

Cardinal Volpe "Well if your that opposed to the Idea then perhaps you would consider another name.  The Iberians have opened the door by nominating  someone who is not a Cardinal.  But you could say the person I have in mind has experience in the job already."

Cardinal Rinaldini "Experience, whom could you possibly be," Stops for a second and smiles. "Oh genius Cardinal Volpe sheer genius.  Its all partially his fault we are in this mess in the first place and if he thinks he can hide in a monestary while we deal with the mess??!!!??"

Cardinal Volpe."So I think I will quietly broach the subject with our own brothers before the next vote and if the reaction is positive we will see if we can get out compromise in the ballot after that one!"

With a nudge from the Mods to speed this up and in an attempt to finish this I will be posting the next Ballot without waiting for all the votes to come.  Nobody is getting elected and I know how most of your were going to vote by now anyway.  ;D

What it will be doing is introducting the Moderate Compromise Canidates and bringing them more into the limelight.   I need to update people choices as people are getting target fixiation on people who have already gotten votes but nobody has been eliminated yet and the canidates include more then just the cardinals even though its very rare in the last 200 years or so.

Sistine Chapel  Monday Afternoon February 6th 1913.

The Cardinals had been in furor ever since the morning Ballot it was obvious to all that some sort of compromise must either be in the offering or someone was going to push very hard to elect Cardinal Maffi in the next few ballots.   Cardinal Rinaldini a noted moderate and long time Vatican Diplomat was obviously not treating his continued candidate seriously because he was doing a whole lot of political maneuvering just prior to the call for the 6th Ballot.
The Results of the Sixth Ballot were as follows

Felix Cardinal Romero     16
Louis Cardinal Billot       1
Aristitde Cardinal Rinaldini       5
Giacomo Cardinal Della Chiesa       3
Pietro Cardinal Maffi     23
Jakobus Cardianl Stammer       1
Abbot Ignatius Curiatius     10
Former Bishop of Rome

"There we are - a way forward', Cardinal Romero noted.  "The movement of support from Maffi to the Abbot is indicative that he is an attempt at compromise."

"That may be", Cardinal Rodriguez said sourly.  "Still, do you really want to just concede?  This is, in all likelyhood, your single opportunity to become pontiff."

"I know that", Romero replied.  "Belive me, I do, but the pattern of voting tells a very clear story:  whoever the College does want as pope, it is not myself.  The Abbot is a reasonable fellow, if a little too ascetic.  Let us not risk the possibility that the candidate after him is less acceptable."

"Very well", Rodriguez said reluctantly.
