Orinoco Class Minesweeper

The early success of mine warfare in the Pacific War has caught the attention of the Armada.  The mining of a DKB battleship in particular has alarmed many senior officers, who are not keen to see something similar happen to the Armada in a future war.

In a scramble to introduce a minimal minesweeping capability - for training and development purposes, if nothing else - the Armada chose to make basic modifications to two El Banco class patrol craft scheduled for construction in 1908.  Cheap, small, and expendable, they seem like ideal choices for minesweeping work.  The two 47mm guns and marine constable accommodations have been replaced by two winches and a single crane capable of deploying sweeping booms and primitive paravanes.

Other modifications include splinter-proofing of the bridge area, an increase in bunkerage, and reduction in size of the powerplant.  The loss of three knots speed does not significantly impair the performance of the minesweeping mission, while allowing for much improved internal subdivision.  This will come in handy when mines start detonating in proximity to the hull.

Rio Negro Class

The Rio Negro class is an enlarged version of the Orinoco class minesweeper, which itself is a modification of the El Banco class patrol sloop.  In order to render the class more flexible, they are intended to fulfill both the minesweeping and coastal patrol functions.

Galeras Class

The Galeras class minelayers are built to the newest torpedo-boat standards.  In time of war, they are intended to lay offensive minefields in enemy waters proximal to Gran Colombia.  Seventy mines are carried aft on dual rails aft, essentially precluding embarkment of torpedoes and requiring that the aft guns be superfiring to avoid unpleasant consequences related to blast effects and nearby mines.

Three units are envisaged for 1912, likely to be dispersed between the two fleets rather than operated as a squadron.

Note that the forward gun is not superfiring, as the sim states; it was just easier than splitting the 3" battery into two separate entries.  It has no significant effect on the design that I can find.

Rio Elqui Class Minesweeper

A new class of minesweeper with the legs to cross oceans at cruising speed.  She has modest defensive capabilities and could be used as a coastal escort instead.

The hull strength is high, reflecting a need for a reasonably large hull for the range, but with minimal fancy fittings due to the expendability factor.  If nothing else, the hull strength improve the chance of surviving nearby detonations.
