So you want to go fast

Hello,

In designing Torpedo boats I have been continually frustrated by the inability to make small ships go as quick as RL examples. According to SS the 'Natural speed' is the 'square root of hull length' (thus little craft will never go fast enough) I also noticed it said 'adjusted by transom stern'. I pressed the transom stern button and behold smaller, quicker TBs (seems to give around 2 knots if extra strength is put into engines).

Since the ability of SS to simulate DDs and below is known to be weak, perhaps we should use this magic button to help out the calculations. I have not studied it too much but it seemed to work. Maybe any vessel using the DD rules(.50 cross sectional strength and 1.25 cost) could use this feature.

Give it a shot and let me know what you think.

SS2 is not good as simming very small ships and boats.

Hello,

I do KNOW that, As I stated above, I am only trying to rectify the poor capability of SS to make small ships. I am not suggesting the ships would actually have a transom stern, I am only trying to boost an area where the program has issues. Rather like adding misc. weight for torpedos, if the program won't do it we can figure out a way of doing it on our own.

Try to build a 'Palmer 30knotter' that does 30knots on 6200ihp. I can only get 25 knots. I have tried many others. Here is another possibility, just add two or three knots to 'DD type' ships. That way the holy grail won't be disturbed.

SS2 breaks down trying to sim fast and small ships. Torpedoboats and motor boats are useless. It's resistance model is not valid above ~30kts for destroyers - although it apparently works for larger ones.
The other problem is that you can simulate lighter machinery only with changing the engine year - but then, even a WWI destroyers had lighter machinery than what SS2 allows (1950 engine year).

The next version of SS3 beta is supposed to have a better resistance model and variable-weight engines, so that's the only reason we do not really bother to change it.
