Tranquilidad Class Collier

Gran Colombia's previous need for colliers was rather limited.  In the pre-canal days, small squadrons would steam around the bottom of the continent to move from one coast to the other; they could typically re-coal at friendly ports on the way.  From 1905 to 1908, even this was unnecessary, and the three colliers on the Armada roster were employed primarily to move coal from the mainland to the various islands.  As such, the collier fleet - two ex-ACM ships and an ex-Island Commonwealth ship - was not expanded upon.

This has changed now that Gran Colombia has distal territorial possessions such as Coquimbo and Colombian Polynesia.  The ability to project power to these locations, or even just to transport large stockpiles of coal for routine operations, requires new ships.  As warships - and their bunkers - grow in size, so must the colliers.

The Tranquilidad class colliers are significantly larger than the older colliers in service with the Armada.  In total, they can carry over 13,000 t of coal, including their own supplies.  There is provision for a modest amount of cargo and passengers, as it might be more convenient to send these with the collier than to wait for the next scheduled freighter or liner; in wartime, this space might be put to use for extra gunners once additional weapons were fitted.  As it is, the armament is light, but there is space for more.

Two units are projected for 1911, with the possibility of one or two more later.  These ships are built to merchantile standards, other than their armament and associated armor.

#4
Lago de Maracaibo Class

With increasing use of oil by modern Colombian warships, the need for fleet oilers has been identified.  The Lago de Maracaibo class closely resembles the contemporary Tranquilidad class colliers, and may be considered half-sisters.

Contraversial is the decision to retain a mixed-fuel powerplant for the class. This was prompted by the recognition that while oil is likely to be a preferred fuel in the future, it may be too precious to necessarily use for bulk freight transport.  Coal, which Gran Colombia has in great supply, is therefore retained for use in the ship.  Her actual range is 10,000 nm @ 10 knots - 50% oil fired, and 50% oil-sprayed coal.  The rest is strictly cargo oil.

This class is built to merchantile standards, other than the armament and associated armor.

Amabilis de Riom Class Ammunition Ships

Three ammunition ships, of generally similar design to the Eber class cargo ships, were built in Japan from 1914 onward.  Contrary to expectations that the ships would be named for things of an explosive nature, they are instead named for patron saints called upon to protect against fire.  This has a more soothing effect on the crews.

Golfo Tortugas Class Oilers

Closely based on the Lago de Maracaibo class, this new class of fleet oiler has oil-fired turbine machinery.  Lighter-weight loading equipment is installed topside.

As in the previous class, provision is included for limited passenger and freight transport, in case it happens to be more convenient to send people or cargo with the oiler rather than divert another ship for that purpose.

Unlike the previous class, there is a substantial mooring mast aft for an airship.  Notionally, the idea is that the type will be capable of re-supplying trans-oceanic missions as the Colombians start introducing Type 2 airships in a little while.  It is not expected that the type would operate smaller blimps, as there is no capacity for blimps or airships to "land".

The armament is significantly heavier, with four 5.5" guns on the beams.
Two units are on order.

Nuestra Senora de Misericordia Class Hospital Ship

After a whole bunch of things blew up in Romania, President Alizandro got to asking about whether the Armada would be able to quickly assist a Colombian town following a disaster.  It turns out, the answer is, "...not really."

So this has been bodged together, based closely on the Senora-type attack transports.  One will be laid down in 1919, and a second may follow in 1920 or 1921 - allowing one to be stationed on each coast, or both in the Caribbean during hurricane season.

Pedro Cornejo Class Vehicle Transport

If a town gets trashed by a hurricane or explosion, it's reasonable to assume that its ambulances and docks will be trashed at the same time.  In order to provide supplies to the distressed, and to move casualties to shoreline evacuation stations, it will be necessary for a relief operation to transport and land its own contingent of ambulances, trucks, and other vehicles.

In looking around for a way to do this, the Colombians noticed the shallow-draft train ferries in use between Maracaibo and Santa Rica at the north end of Lago Maracaibo.  They load from the stern, and the locomotives sit low towards the centre.

This design increases the freeboard some, and adds a ramp at the stern to allow the ship to back up to the shore and unload her cargo.  Limited maintenance facilities have been added as well.  Range and speed are adequate to cross the Caribbean, but this would not be an effective ocean-going vessel; in fact, the Caribbean might be a challenge in crappy weather.

One unit will be built, and is named for an early pioneer in the Colombian auto sector.
