4 of the eldest, only barely refitted, not adapted, nor really modernized vessels, the troublesome year 1905 precluded any rebuild as given to the Magenta and Marceau.

On the list  for reserve/sale/scrap , Formidable and Brennus are the first 2 to be removed from the list  in HY1 1908

After a very expensive rebuild in 1902, the 2 ships of the Neptune class are again front line units, albeit slow.

Increased speed, increased range for indian ocean and pacific use.
New shells, new armor and bulged for  better underwater protection.
A higher bow makes these ships more comfortable, and the 250 tons of misc weight is used on a marconi set, a set of Ears and comfort increasing messures.

18000tons of misc weight is:

8.50t / 1st class cabin passenger .........800 passengers = 6800tons
4.25t / 2nd class cabin passenger.........1000 passengers = 4250tons
1.78t / Steerage passenger......................2500 passengers = 4450tons
Total passengers.......................................4300 passengers = 14900tons
Cargo = 1500tons
Extras inc wireless & more seaboats = 1000tons

The first tests she made in open waters were almost a disaster. The incredibly complicated engines did put the power these promised to the water, but at a cost. Around 24 kts -75%- of power, the moving masses of generators, turbines and electrical motors created harmonics and those caused vibrations.

When the engines were at 100% the vibrations were so bad, hull seams started opening and heavy machinery worked lose on the stools.

As she was build, and the solving of these problems would have added months, if not years to her maiden trip as a liner, the simple solution was to limit her engines to 65% of maximum power.
Even on 65% the disadvantages of the power were obvious, the decks astern of the smokestacks were awash with the black smoke of the coal burning.
This obviously isn't a good thing when the ladies and gentlemen want to stroll the deck, trow a pentanqueball in the , designed as a prestine ochre,  gravel field or enjoy a good book in the comfortable deck chair.

The owners have decreed that maximum speed allowed to the ship, as liner, is 22 kts. This reduces smoke, and the smokestacks are capable to keep it from the deck in most weatherconditions.

Still these huge ships are classed as the fastest liners in use as the theoretical top speed is only bettered by dedicated warships and certain yachts that are more engine than ship.

The extensive rebuild ships were a succesfull attempt to create a workship (think Kearsarge) to aid the digging of the Great Canal.

The forward twin 10.83L30 turrest has fired their last shots in 1908 in a salute to celibrate the finishing of the Great Canal. The munition stores are still there, as well as the ancient shells, but powdercharges are replaced regulary as the old ones are dispatched together with other blasting charges in the great works these ships do.
The crews for manning these guns are still in French naval pay, but these are also acting as officers and engineers on the civilian flagged ships. Upkeep is done on  civilian money and is payed by the jobs thses ships do.

On a request, I dug up the old A class liners from the depths of my memory.

A lost liner class  from the Nverse II.

Aphrodite, Arthemis, Athena, and the oddly named Adonis. Considered very handsome ships when build, and lucky during the decennia these old ones (20 years +) still do the job, but the hulls are getting tired.
